Just looked them up. They must have your IP address and filtered you out for returning too much stuff.

It is true. The reason is that REI has been selling ten times more carabiners than they actually have. It's a scam, and works like this.First they sell Joe Sportpack ten biners,he returns nine of them, then they sell those nine, and that person returns eight,so eventually everybody just really has one biner when the music stops, and REI has all the money, which they pay to their executives, who then spend 484.4 million dollars on a spa weekend at the Ahwanee.
What size tin foil hat do you wear?

I got 10 BD wiregates no problems. I need more biners like I would need engorged hemoroids, but at $3.98 each it was too cheap to pass up.

Hey Tomcat
That was a pretty good post. For somebody who doesn't believe in that stuff, at least you've been paying attention. Go back to the other thread if you get a chance and post some documented contrary evidence against any of the facts you alluded to. I'd love to see it.

How long is the sale lasting? I am coming over in mid-December. Sounds like a great price for a biner.

Interesting... On all counts. I just bought enough biners to re-do my entire rack and replaced a bunch of lockers, as well. I doubt I'll be taking any of them back, contrary to your "theory"... :)

OK, now there's an underlying conspiracy to the facile fruitcake conspiracy (they are always finding new ways to delude us!).
Originally there were only 5 fruitcakes being passed around. Now 200? Very fishy.
I have an 80,000 word all manifesto I'd post on this, but I seem to have misplaced it. I think the black helicopters may have nabbed it last night.

I eat every fruitcake I come across, so I'm doing my part to stop the madness. I figure I've eaten like, five in my life, so if I can get a little help, we might just solve this thing.

While the tin foil hat appears to be working fine, not ALL BD biners are on the REI site that they have sold before.
The "OZ" biner is conspicously missing. Want to advertise "ALL BD BINERS on sale" conveniently tell people you got no "OZ" biners in stock.
REI employees post up. Seen any OZ on your shelves?
BD employees post up. Do you know if REI carries that biner and why they aren't available currently on their flagship rei.com site?

REI = Big Box corporatization. Just say 'no'.
Buy from local outdoor retailers.

WHen I bought my stuff, I was in the back room, going through all of their biners, here in Fresno, Munge... No OZ biners on the shelves, or in stock.
edit: So there are actually people out there who *eat* fruitcake??? Youch! Wouldn't a bite of that sh#t last you like two days worth of chewing? I didn't think there were people out there who can actually stomach the stuff...

REI does not re-sell used climbing gear or climbing gear taken in as a return so I'm not sure how Tomcat developed his economic theory. This may call into question the other 300+ posts he has related to economics on what used to be a climbing forum.

Shipping is spendy for some of us, so getting it at REI can be cheaper.
As to fruitcakes, like politiceans, they can be good but mostly aren't. If you make one from scratch, pretty good. Put the candied fruits and raisins in rum and let them soak a good week or so, and you might be suprised.

Fruitcakes are excellent cold weather climbing food. Lot's of calories, protein from the nuts, and if made correctly, a nice helping of booze.
