DOUGLAS, Ariz. - Mexican authorities believe that a stolen van outfitted with a cannon and parked near the U.S.-Mexico border was used to launch items into Douglas, Arizona.

Federal police found the van parked in a street in Agua Prieta, Mexico, which borders with Douglas, last week. The van was reported stolen out of Hermosillo over the summer.

Photos provided by Mexican authorities show a black van with a giant cannon coming out of it.

Drug smugglers have used similar methods in the past, including using catapults to literally send drugs flying over the border.

Border Patrol spokesman Vicente Paco said the most common method is throwing softball-sized marijuana packages over the border fence that are picked up by smugglers on the U.S. side.

He said finding cannons is rare and only happens every couple of years.

wonder how much is coming over in drones now? I just did an upgrade to my controller for my P4 and now get a five mile range. Actually, more, much more on the signal. It's the battery that's the limiting factor.

The DJI M600 gets 34 minutes of flight time and can travel at 60mph with a 5lb payload.

what's 5lbs of coke worth on this side of the boarder?

Nature, just make sure to wipe your fingerprints before flying in case counter-drone activities are successful ;)

And look into spread-spectrum or frequency-hopping transmitters, and change your physical location during transmissions, and be based in an area with lots of plausible deniability!

And hire an intermediary for customer-facing interactions, and make sure that intermediary has no way to personally identify you in case they are tortured.

By far the most illicit drugs come across the border by the usual means, bribing and/or coercing the inspectors.

The tunnels, drones, cannons etc. are either amateurs or just used to divert attention from what's really going on.

Funny that Kevin still refers to 'jet fuel'. Back then it would have been high lead content 101 octane' - not real good for you, not that jet fuel would be any better. :-/
