@TGT:
In the OP, I linked to the SierraWave article because it's the our local news resource (and a fine one, at that), but I pulled the eco-terrorist/anti-wilderness speculation from another local source, the Inyo Register, and the LA Times website. I regret jumping to conclusions, but you have to admit there appeared to be a pattern to the events. And as far as the suspect being just a low-life thief, there was never any indication anything was actually stolen from the vehicles. And why break windows of cars you're syphoning gas from? I guess crazy-and-insane is always the wildcard, though.

In regards to the title of the post, I suppose Ecoterrorism just has a nice trollish ring to it - just reaches out and grabs you.

Christiana was arrested on charges of auto theft, possession of stolen property, and burglary

From the other article

Mono County has had reports of fee tubes, where campers pay their fees at unstaffed campgrounds, burglarized.

Check your reading comprehension.

More than likely two different actors though. The summit hut on White would not be reachable by road without going thru the research center.

Most likely two different nut cases running around up there.

upon reading the thread title, my mind raced through the likely suspects:

LADWP
Caltrans
Mammoth Mountain
Inyo NF

So it was none of these?

Highdesert, I agree tacitly with your 4 wheelin' comment, although 4 wheelin' can be done with less impact if you don't try to emulate the commercial slides/drifts/jumps. I taught my wife to 4 wheel in low-lock and plenty of patience with care in driving direction...on an outing, we had guys in Jeeps blast by churning up the desertscape, which will take decades to recover. When we said "Hi" to them, they commented on our 'underpowered Xterra', I felt like pulling out my underpowered PPK and seeing how their Mickey T Kevlar Belt Super Mudders would hold up.

If you hassle the off roader's, that just means more Jet Skis down the road, are you sure that's what you want?

So my drunken friend dis ables the wrist strap on his jet ski, falls off, the throttle is half on, the thing does laps in the cove, people try to come along side and wrestle it down like some kind of aquatic hog tying contest, they end up falling off, now they are getting run down by the wild jet ski, the thing finally beaches itself after scaring the sh#t out of the whole dang place.

I'm no OHV fan at all. But in fairness, folks could say the same thing about climbers.

Now that I bought my four wheeler, I think I'll try a little off road.

TGT - Check your reading comprehension.

Comprehending just fine, thanks. As I said, nothing was stolen from the 19 or so vehicles. Nothing. Windshields broken, brake lines cut, and water poured into gas tanks, but nothing stolen. Not a typical MO for a burglar.

And I'm not sure how the fee tube burglary is related to this, other than your assumptions. The suspect was in possession of some articles stolen from a cabin on Big Pine Creek, and apparently has been tied to the trail head vandalism because they found a hammer in his car.

Incidently, I ride a motorcycle and own a 4WD truck. I've been bouncing around dirt roads in the Whites and around the Eastside for 25 years. I have nothing against responsible OHVers, and I understand why they might disagree with extending wilderness areas. But I find something interesting: If these same events had occurred, but with different targets, what would the reaction be? Let's just say, for example, that someone was vandalizing dirt bikes, quads, and rhinos in the area. They cut brake lines on trucks pulling OHV trailers, and smashed windows of, or even set fire to, local businesses that cater to OHV users. How would this be interpreted by the local community, law enforcement, etc., in light of the current, hotly debated Wilderness Bill? Just curious.

Wes, you are one confused individual. You are going around in circles so fast it is making my head spin. "I didn't say 'all'", "I did say 'all'", "That's not what I meant", That IS what I meant"...make up your mind dude.

Dr. Schitt(DMT), you and your kind are very amusing. Always lecturing people not to paint with a broad brush and that is exactly what you guys are doing here. It really ruins what little credibility you folks have on the subject.

Flashlite - The White Mtn. research station rarely has anybody around. It isn't much more than a stone hut like the one on Whitney.

Couldn't be more wrong. The summit laboratory is the fourth-highest research facility in the world and the highest in North America. It housed a variety of expensive technical equipment for high-altitude research, in addition to the wireless internet repeater that supplies the Barcroft Laboratory below with web access. It's an integral part of the Research Station, and because of it's remote location will be difficult to repair.

Well, I stand corrected on the summit shack. When I was there, nobody was around and it sure "looked" like a stone shack to me. I have talked to many people who have been up there and they had never seen anybody there. Sorry about that...

Dingus, who are you again?

To say I was "stalking" anybody just shows what a fool you are.

For an older guy you sure show an astounding lack of reasoning ability.

Dingus, for you to say I am "stalking" a woman because she attacked me on this forum numerous times and I fired back is absolutely assinine...I won't even address that issue any more as you are obviously slanted and slightly 5150. A little history...YOU should not be lecturing anybody.

The below is copy/pasted:

The emergence of Dr. Schitt changed all that. Being such a distinctive nickname
caused me to check out this poster right away. Before long, I had him pegged as
Dingus, but it wasn't until the end that he f*#ked up and gave up the evidence.
So let's take a little look at what Dingus said when he was hiding behind his
Dr. Schitt handle...

Now why would good old Dingus use another alias to flame Nate? Not only that,
ohmygod, he called him a name! I thought Dingus was above all that? Dawn
defended Dingus not long ago, until I exposed him as Dr. Schitt. Dawn, why
don't you speak up and answer this question. You said that Dingus didn't do
this kind of sh#t. What gives?
