Munge,

too busy trying to figure out how to 1) stand on that crap foothold, 2) hold the hammer in my right hand, 3) hold the drill in my left hand and most importantly, 4) NOT FALL to post up.

5) Look determined and ruggedly handsome in pics of yourself stance drilling.

Put up the start of a crack route a couple weeks ago but had to drill the anchor for p2. My stance was the same size as my foot and I was still shaking like a leaf!

I think I totally agree with you though I didn't read everything so maybe not.

But most really hard placements where made before film was invented.

I've seen some really bold placements, but my brownie was too much to take along. (a brownie is a type of camera that nobody uses any more, since the 40's).

Seriously, though ignore my gobbledygook above. I have the highest regard for anyone putting in their bolts on the lead. It doesn't get more real than that.

Cheers

We rate the stance, not the climbing. It's all about the stances man! Ross, who's in his early twenties drilling from about an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10......no brownie's neccesary...

My stance about drilling is that when it comes to putting up new routes, if bolts are needed the climb is not for me. It's just a personal preference and I do appreciate climbers putting up routes with bolts because I like to climb them. I really could care less if the bolts were put in by drilling from a stance or otherwise.
I have managed to do hundreds of new pitches of climbing sans bolts and will continue to seek out climbs of that nature. I will also continue to enjoy climbing routes that are all or partly bolt protected and be thankful for the effort and expense of the first ascensionists.
Rock is our playground and the judicious use of bolts opens up vastly more terrain for our entertainment.

^^^ Have placed (after-the-fact) one protection bolt in 43 years after my partner complained people wouldn't have the two #2 ballnuts for the placement. Called the route 'Hollow Victory' as a result. Still spicy, though.

Watching Ron Carson stance drill on 5.12 Dome Rock slab is one of the most bad azz things I've ever seen in the world of rock climbing

Confusion between "stance" and "hooked". Lotta hooking on Dome Rock. Hard even for badasses to resist the "higher" numbers....
