climbers dogs are the coolest.
they climb with us,
ski with us,
usually eat with us,
sleep with us.
There's a lot of overlap between climber and dog outlook, it seems. It's a kick seeing all the shared days on this thread.

life s a bitch, could not make it without a dog.
My dog spent three hours outside today sitting in the snow, waiting patiently (with no luck) for a squirrel to come down from a tree. Or dashing around the forest through deep snow tracking turkeys. After those adventures she now lies curled up and napping, nose under her tail husky style. Does anyone not smile when they see a curled-up sleeping dog?

Actually, just before I took the picture a few posts back, Jasper looked at me and said, "Mom told me I could lay on the couch." Now I knew this was a blatant untruth, but rather than call him out as a liar I decided to...

I know Dingus' cartoon is about right, still I discuss many things with my dog.

Hi there,

I am so sorry to tell you that little Monty died yesterday.

He was 15 1/2 years old, he had a wonderful life and in the end he died very peacefully at animal hospital. Except for allergies he had never been sick, which was a great blessing. He started declining rapidly in the last two months, he just stopped eating.

Meme his cat will miss him, she has no one to lick or bite.

I have a lifetime of wonderful memories of Monty, what a blessing he was to me.

It is too bad our lives are often made up of equal parts of love and pain.

Thank goodness I have to be back at work in a few days that will save me.

Much love to all,

Susie

Oh, PR....I'm so sorry. Losing a Ratty is about as bad as it gets.

He was such a distinguished gentleman...and no doubt a perfect companion.

I wish you both peace, and hope you will find a new best friend very soon.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts.

My husband died 16 years ago, I adopted Monty because I was so lonely.

It was the best decision I could've made. He bonded to me instantly and was never been more than a few feet away. I often said I should have called him Velcro.
All animals are wonderful but some are very special.
People always ask me why Monty was so well behaved and I used to say if you give them a perfect life this is what you get, for sure he was a great example of unconditional love.

Oh my, yes.

Are you considering another Ratty? I'm sure it's tough to think about, but they are such great buddies, they can really make a big difference.

There is no doubt that Rat Terriers are great, they are so smart and in Monty's case submissive which made him so easy to deal with, he just wanted to please.

It's too soon to think of another dog, right now my heart is broken.
The fact is I'm 71 and while I think I'm healthy, I have a lung disease that may pop it's ugly head up at any time.

If I do get another dog it will definitely be a senior citizen. That would be fair thing to do. I may try fostering some dogs God knows Florida has so many that need homes.

My heart goes out to you, PR. There's a pup out there that would love to have you as their friend. When you're ready (or maybe a little before you're ready), rescue that buddy.
