"JDF - CNN Reporting - THEY DID EVERYTHING RIGHT!"
Except ignoring obvious bad weather, not knowing how and when to use a GPS when several were available, and pushing on in a white out when they didn't know where they were or where they were going. In the end, you just can't legislate away bad judgment and unfortunately it sticks out quite embarassingly when exercised in highly public venues.

"What's the matter with the dogs?"
I'll tell ya what's the matter. Dogs don't belong in the mountains or around the crags, mainly because the people who bring them don't give a st about the other people there. Over the years I've been bitten, barked at, and surrounded by idiot's dogs. I've had dogs dig into my pack and eat my food and I've had to dodge dog crap. And of course I'm the ahole when I get pissed off about it.
Do us all a favor, leave your dog(s) at home.

OMG, that's just what we need. Now everyone and their brother will bring the dog along. I've got to go now, sharpen up my tools . . .

The untold story is the dog repeatedly tried to get the climbers? to turn around when she realized they were an accident waiting to happen.

I was out wandering in the woods up near the snowline this weekend with a (great fella) logger who had a wonderful dog.
After I had complimented him on the dog he said: " I bring him along in case it gets bad and I have to eat him".
I said, "thank God, cause as fat as I am, I'd go for me first if I was you."
He just stared at me....strangely quiet.
Later I saw him hugging the dog......
Pretty unnerving. Not a good time to get lost without a handgun on your person (and I'd left my new switchblade/automatic knife in the car to go light).

I could easily have missed part of the story, so I am sorry if this question has been answered:
They fell, everybody was o.k. they spent the night and everybody was o.k. then they waited for somebody to come walk them down the mountain??? WTF.
Get your map and walk, climb, whatever it will take and go down.
Can't imagine waiting for a rescue when the party is healthy, just a bit off route.

BTW: I'm hurting dude: you don't know sh#t about dogs. Most of them will outclimb most of us on steep snow till it hits about 70 degrees steep.
They love getting out there. Just like us.
But at the crags, you have a valid viewpoint. Can't argue.
Not my wifes Jack Russells mind you, unless there was some squirels involved. Then they'd be all over it. Otherwise, they don't like cold.

Is the real JDF a big wall climber?
Juan de Fuca was a Greek, born in the island of Cephalonia in the Ionian Sea, and his real name was Apostolos Valerianos. Adventurous, as all the Cephalonians are, he went to Spain and there he became a mariner and a pilot in the service of that country for 40 years. Died around 1600.

Couch,
My point is why trigger the rescue? Because they were scared, realy really scared? From what I have heard they quit early (It is possible I have missed a piece of the story).
This is the nightmare of the PLB. Too many false alarms that send out the calvery.
I guess I do not find the information that I know of justification for triggering a rescue. I would be ruined if somebody was injured or died trying to rescue me... Especialy if I called for am unnecessary rescue.

I honestly can't wait to see the new super Valley duo tearing it up this spring. Velvet the Wonder Dog and Bear 46 are going to destroy El Cap speed records... I just wish Ouch had some photos of their secret training sessions...
