MOUNT HOOD - Two separate rescue operations are under way on Mount Hood - one is an effort to reach an eight-person climbing party, three of whom fell off a ledge, and the other is to find a man and a woman who activated their locator units, signaling that they are in trouble.

The search for the couple was called off as somehow not real. The three that took the ride have apparently been located and are alive. Yes, cellphones I believe.

Ten to start. The search for the couple was called off equals eight. Three fell off a cornice equals five who came down. Three who fell have been located and are the only ones currently on the mountain as the object of the rescue. Cellphones, yes.

And don't forget the dog. A lab is up there with them too.

this is what I found most impressive -- it reminded me of those old woodcut drawings of Whymper & Co and the other high society climbers of the early 1900s who took to the rock in hoop skirts, parasols and God knows what else. The '07 version: Bring your dog on a winter ascent of Mt. Hood.

They have a party up there right now looking for them. I hear another rescue party spent the night up there in a tent to get a morning head start.

The dog...that blew me away. I hope he makes it out with the others. God help 'em all.

I work on Hood 2-3 days a week , and I can tell you why this keeps happening.

You cannot fathom how many people head up to climb Hood on any given day. Not all of them can be experienced enough to get out of trouble should it arise , and it does...

It is very easy to access , park your rig and you are on it in minutes ,and within a few hours you are up in the thick of things..all is well, weather looking good ...then it can start changing in a heartbeat. The wind picks up , weather moves in and the scene changes very quickly. At this point the hill becomes very serious , I know , I've been up there and an experienced climber needs their " A" game to get down.

These folks do not have that experience and are now in trouble.
It is too easy to take Hood lightly...but she can kill you if you do not respect her .

Ground_up has it right. 98% of the time, 98% of almost anyone can get up and down it alive. The problem is that the 2% of the time when things go wrong, 98% of the people up there do not have the requisite technical alpine skills to effectively deal with the the events and circumstances at hand. The average skill set is probably somewhat better than that of folks going up the cables on Half Dome, but likely not by a whole lot. And that folks keep heading up with squeaker weather windows with no backend margin of error is particularly troubling and costly. Up there with a dog? Priceless and pretty much says it all...

Not sure about Hood but Saturday in Seattle was a very warm spring day, 65'ish degrees and sunny. Late afternoon though, right around dusk, things turned nasty very quickly. Temp dropped, wind howled, and precip hit. Forecast today is for high winds and 2-3' of snow at 3,000'.

Hopefully they're not pinned down for days again.

Now we know they are safe can we charge them with a crime for putting the dog in harms way?
