Yes Hill country!
Have I got this right - that you are taking Rt62 to Rt 86/17? all the way?

or are you dropping south somewhere? Taking Rt6? to Rt84? to Scranton?

I guess I could see that Especially "nice?" hilly & "backwater", from Gulf Summit all the way through Deposit, Rosco, Lock Sheldrake? I know that route, (edit/ but that is 30 years ago). I think that its a fun run going out
I'm not 2nd guessing, just to take it coming back?
It is 50 more miles, speed/time only 2 hours
but the work for the horse is near double.

Change in plans. I just decided to make it easy on myself..... It's going to be raining all day and hard tonight. The driving won't be fun, I won't stop and walk the towns, and there on't be bivy options that are easy.

Highway 80 here we come.

Edit: Your insights are correct. Police aren't an issue as I don't speed but yeah, it's mean to Penny, when she's been so loyal this trip, just throwing those brake shoes back in Quartzsite and can't blame an ole hoss for that! Shoes wear out.

The sputtering that got taken care of briefly with a tune-up did return, and that was what was making me dread those Alleghany hills last time.

So - taking the path of least resistance.

oh! good you're here
yes take Rt 80!
the other route you were looking at has some "struggling to make ends meet" territory - where opportunity can drive good people to take advantage...you seem well connected but do not hesitate to call for a rescue, the Gnome name all one word & NO capital letters or spaces GMail
If the weather has you struggling PERSEVERE, keep it at 60 & stop at the 180 mile markers. but you know all this
YOU GOT THIS WOMEN!
Here's TO good traveling!

I don't visit, no need to add to the hoard - but if I do,
I'll make a point of dancing your direction.(The Clove, Split Rock)

eDIT
I'm told the roads Rt 86/17 are fine, big/4 lane wide highways & less traffic on a Sunday, I forgot about that.
But Still, Rt80 is The shorter more flat route ...
checking the forecast? Once you get out of Ohio, it looks overcast and low winds out of the South-west?

I'm stopped a rest at mile 147 on I-80. It's been raining the whole way and sometimes pretty bad, but right now it's almost even not taking.

Going to stop for gas next town and who knows - I might even get home tonight, though I seriously doubt that.

I don't like to drive in the dark, especially on busy highways.

As for hard-times towns, there's something about them that I find intriguing. Seeing the remnants of past prosperity and imagining how the place was....

But as for head times - I forgot that the west side of Warren was what it is - abandoned massive industrial plants with "Available" signs up for years, as if those plants are ever going to see a tenant again....

Thursday's Child
by Aoife O'Donovan

I got nothing to hide, and I'm as naked as the day is born
In November and you know what they say
Thursday's child has far to go, don't I know.

I got far to go, should I leave you behind?
And drive to Alaska on Saturday night
These four walls around me are?

No one's riding shotgun, I'm driving alone
I can turn up the music and do whatever I want
When I get to the border, put a quarter in the payphone.

Oh, my tyranny's gonna crumble
And so, sit next to me and fumble
With the buttons on my dress
What do you wanna be?
I wanna be a poet.

To get down on my knees and unplug your drain
Get an ache in my bones every time that it rains
And when I look up at the sun in the sky, I tell time.

If something is leaking, just give me a call
There's a tear on your cheek, there's a crack in the wall
I can soak up the water with the folds of my black shawl.

Oh, my tyranny's gonna crumble
And so, sit next to me and fumble
With the buttons on my dress
What do you wanna do?
I wanna watch you stumble.

Stumble through this fertile land
In your pocket are both my hands
When you get to the other side
The northern lights and a blanket of white.

I wanted to be a singer, so I grew my hair long
I needed a guitar slinger to push me along
To fill out my verse and my chorus with a baritone.

I got nothing to hide, I'm laying it out there
Take it or leave it, you can't figure it out
Thursday's child has far to go, I'm gonna shatter.

Oh, my tyranny's gonna crumble
And so, sit next to me and fumble
With the buttons on my dress
Buttons on my dress
Buttons on my dress.

Hahaha.....I don't actually play music while driving. I like "think my thoughts," and talk to Lucas if need be.

I can't believe how much quicker it is to drive the interstates...

I'm only 163 mile from New Paltz already!

But I'm going to stay another night out so as to not be getting back at dark. I like to see that drive up the ridge and get home during daylight.

hahah - too funny.

This year, as last year, I have made a New Season Resolution to be kinder, gentler. I know that I noticed the difference last year, but it didn't seem like anyone else did. I still had my reputation as "the hard one," and got told to "lighten up!" even when I was a good 20 pounds lighter than I felt like I should have weighted in at....

I do wish I could have a laissez faire attitude, but ya know....I go to places where I'm surprised about the day fee, or need to show my pass or some of the things that people get up in arms about, and I just can't imagine being that way.

Anyway - my plan is to just smile and say "'m sorry you feel that way." At least as long as that lasts.....

Anyway - I'm taking it easy this last night on the road, and expect to be back at the cabin tomorrow about noontime. Unfortunately it's a rainy forecast, so I may be living out of the van even there for a few days! Tromping up that hill with all the stuff when it's muddy isn't much fun.

The wind is picking up pretty good right now. I just left Starbucks and the patio umbrellas got away and were headed with the wind. An employee ran out and grabbed one and almost pulled a "Mary Poppins!"

Just a confirmation that I did get back yesterday about 1pm. Van is kind of unpacked, and cabin is kind of set up. Lucas has already gotten a tick, though I think it might have been in Ohio or Pennsylvania since it was already attached.

Thanks to everyone for your support, and for the naysayers - nyah nyah nyah....! But don't worry. I'm pretty sure Penny will be still the ride next year and ONE OF THESE DAYS she's got to kick the bucket so you can be all "I TOLD ya so!!!1111"!

Thanks Yury! I haven't been..... it's about 400 miles away, so doable. I'm going to research the event to see who is selling there and if it's good prices. I do have enough material to wait until next winter in Quartzsite where I know prices are as good as I can get, but it would be fun to go if I can get some money saved to buy enough material to make the cost associated with the travel worthwhile.

I'm kind of considering saving up about 5K for a set up (rock saw, trim saw,Grind/Polish machine, buff machine and associated items), but then will need a shop space. It's possible I could convince my place of work to let me do in their barn but...iffy, since it would technically be a commercial thing. More likely a better idea to see about renting space in someone's garage or something. I have always thought the old concrete block building in 44/55 in Gardiner that has the "liquor" sign on it would make a good studio. But all this wouldn't be until next year anyway.
