I still have to mid April to get back to NY, but I'm heading out of Quartzsite as soon as I get offline.

The van had no problems on the way west, although after being in Q a while, I had the *Flat Tire Fiasco* where I had three repairs within a week's time. And then the brakes needed work. These things happen to everyone, and I bet many of my naysayers have had much more serious car issues when they have been on the road.

I really missed Joshua Tree and felt kind of weird for not going. Though I plan to return to Quartzsite again next year, I also need to take some time to be in JT. Just wish the camping there was more doable.

I learned a LOT about rock cutting, and met many people in the rock-shaping and selling network. My plan for back east is to join the local rock club in NY, which also has a lapidary shop, albeit a much smaller one, and continue to develop my skills. It's just been such a great feeling to be making pendants with stones I cut. In my time here this season, I purchase only 2 cabochons, both of which are very nice examples of their type and in stone too soft and pricey for a beginner like me to screw up on. I probably shaped 100 stones this season, but haven't counted yet, and I have some nice material ready to go when I get back to NY.

Quartszite is an odd town.... but for me the benefits really outweighed the negative aspects.

So - on to Prescott for a few days, and it's supposed to be cold and snowing for a few days. Then, a visit to Jerome, and a stay for another several days around Sedona. Then, Flagstaff area and north into the beautiful state of Utah for some time. I hope to visit Monument Valley formally this time, rather than just eyeing its majesty as I drive through. Will spend some time around Canyonlands and then Moab, and then want to spend some time near Grand Junction, before....time to get headed back east for family visit and then work. I just hope it's not snowing still by then!

As usual - a spam announcement for two reasons. To peeve certain people, and to raise funds for gas money.

Happie, enjoy your trip! I moved to Prescott from rural VA with some friends when I was seventeen. I learned to climb there. There are some great spots around there, weather permitting. I mentioned Sullys Canyon in another thread as a place you might escape the weather. Its near Chino Valley. If the weather is good, Thumbe Butte has some great routes on it, Groom Creek is awesome bouldering, and Granite Mountain is just perfect.
The Haunted Hamburger in Jerome has a great burger and a banging view. 'The Mace' in Sedona is one of the coolest routes I've ever climbed.
There is a place east of I-17 near I believe where 89a puts you back on the highway called 'The Crack at Wet Beaver Creek' (seriously) Its a 3.5 mile hike in to one of the prettiest swimming holes ever. Might be too cold to swim but a special place nonetheless.
Hope your trip goes well!

And cowboy hats are great if your in the sun. I prefer straw hats or felt.

Thanks for the great suggestions! John M- maybe next year I can go through Kingman/Bulkhead City on my way in or out. I used to go through Kingman every time, but after seeing Utah, my oath has been drawn that way. And on the way down this time, I had such an urge to visit Medulla and eat at La Posta that I detoured quite a bit south to do it!

If you find yourself on I70 through Missouri, between Columbia and St. Louis is Grahams Cave State Park. It's far enough off the road but not far at all. Great camping and showers to boot for $8. And a camp host. It was my stop every time commuting from Denver to W.V. and back. Exactly halfway 10 hrs.

Just sayin'

Happy trails!!!

Hahah - I just sold a pendant to a guy I was chatting with at the Starbucks here in Prescott. We chatted for a looooong time and he kept asking questions and just as I was thinking "Well, how do I tell this person I'm done talking..." he says "Do you have your jewelry with you?"

I had also bought new display cases and display pads while in Quartzsite and this was the first time I have sold out of them. Was much more professional looking than my old storage box, which is better suited for inventory storage on supplies.

Can't expect that to happen too often, but it was pretty sweet that it happened today!

I dig the seasonal migrations that you pull off! Happie Roads indeed.

Good call passing on the cowboy hat...it can seem like such a good idea but then...

Keep us posted Happie, I'd love to share tea and check out your craft items if we happen to be in the same place-time. I will be in Moab/GJ area again next week and then back on the Front Range; if we line up you definitely have safe harbor with us in FoCO (parking & free wifi/Lucas-friendly indoor space/shower, any or all) if you'd like. Shoot, it might be warm enough that we could go enjoy a nice moderate multi-pitch at my home granite Grey Rock.

I'm in Prescott for the next few days - will be in Jerome on Tuesday. Thanks for the parking tip - last year I came through and there was not a single spot I could find. Admittedly, I am not about to do a squeeze job that involves backing up in a parallel parking spot but I was shocked at how full the place was.

Pennsylenvy - If they allow doggies that could be cool, but most places don't, and I wouldn't want to impose my dog to an establishment that prefers not to have them. I'm hoping this rainy weather coming is going to be lightweight rain and not real rain....

Moab arrival isn't for at least two weeks.

My plan is to leave Grand Junction about April 1st, so Moab will be probably March 20th-25thish.

Got to Sedona yesterday. This afternoon Lucas and I hiked a section of the Soldiers Pass trail. Not that I've been on so many of the trails the few times I've been here, but this has been my favorite. By far.

Tomorrow the plan is to get up early and get a parking spot at a trailhead. Any suggestions for a half day hike(for me and Lucas that becomes a full day with all the sniffing and picture taking). Moderate to strenuous is fine.

It took me about 45 minutes to get from the trailhead at Thunder Mountain to the end of traffic heading up 89A towards Flagstaff. But here I am, on my way again - kind of.

The forecast ain't so great for the next several days. Going to stay in Flagstaff Thursday and go to a movie, get a shower and get some orders sent out. But then what....

I WAS going to leave Friday and stay Friday night in Tuba City as a travel stop, and then head to Valley of the Gods on Saturday.

But I see that it's really not that long to get to Tuba City. But kind of long(for me) to go from Flagstaff to Valley of the Gods in one day.

So...I'm thinking to detour up around Page and then come back south to 163 and on to Valley of the Gods.

So - what's to do in that region around Page - besides Antelope Canyon(too much a hassle to deal with). Been to Horseshoe Bend. Been to the Visitor Center by the Glen Canyon Damn. I'm more interested in scenic hiking. However - it is rainy in the area, so don't want to get on roads that could be potentially soupy.

And then - I've never been to Valley of the Gods, although have been in the area(went up Moki Dugway to Cedar Mesa and hiked there once).

Questions:
By Saturday/Sunday, should I be concerned about the roads with the rain that's in the forecast?
Any special spots people would recommend?

I'm not sure how many days I will spend in there, and then would like to stop at one or two other places between there and Moab. I'd like to do two overnights in VoGs, and two more nights before getting into Moab, but not sure if I can handle internet withdrawal for that long.

Okay...great suggestions!(kidding).

I decided what to do. Will head out tomorrow at a time that makes a walk around Tuba City and rest there for the night timely. Then, on to Monument Valley. Hopefully camping won't be too expensive there, but if so, then will continue to VoG area to sleep on BLM.

Moab is nuts busy and the nearby CG sites are very busy and $20. Go up La Sal Mtn about 20 mi out of town. You can stay at any pull out beside the road, or a very short distance off it that does not have a no camping sign. It's not wilderness, there are dispersed Mansions spread around the hillside. It's free and night traffic was minimal if any. Bring water. Only saw a couple other peeps last fall. Did not seem sketch at all to me. Easier to scope out in the daylight. Good luck.

Here's a view from my campsite for tonight. This is the BLM land on the road heading into Indian Creek. Not only is it beautiful and quiet-I get a cell signal! Hahaha

Once in Moab I just urban bivy. Never saw a town more car-bivy friendly. Really, I need town amenities on a frequent basis. Post Office mostly, but also the library to work on pictures and listings for my shops and deal with marketing and customer service.

National Park Pass - With a dog, you can barely do anything in a NP. I still was going to get one but on the way out had no problem enjoying non-NP lands and didn't bother. Now I'm almost out of the range where is use it. Sure it would have been nice to go to Natural Bridges, Canyonlands and Arches, but my clock is ticking to get started east in some sort of quicker motion. I'm wanting to visit that place outside of Grand Junction, and maybe I will get a pass to do that. Need to do a little research about it. People say its very nice.

Hahaha - My *best* was with Teddy. Someone whose name rhymes with Mod Borden, and another whose rhymes with Pucker Trek, and crew had taken a bunch of us out climbing on Geology Road. There were a good number of vehicles parked on the road and ranger thought perhaps a pirate guide situation.

When he started walking in, he noticed Teddy's patients and followed them to our group.

Now, Teddy had stolen my brownie from the farmers market, which was loaded with chocolate, and he was sick. I didn't know at the time what had happened, and honestly thought it was his last day on earth. So, Teddy was huddled in a little corner with his winter coat on, which blended into the rocks.

The ranger had apparently asked some of the first in our group that he came upon if we had a dog because he'd followed "quadriped trackea," but the stoners had forgotten there WAS a dog, and honestly said no.

That was about when I realized there was a ranger in our midst. He was kind of scouting because he believed he'd been handed a brownie[haha..just realized the connection] and he was looking for the dog.

I forced myself to be invisible and not so much as THINK about Teddy, and that guy walked right up and past me - and Teddy - and didn't say a word.

Dud he see poor Teddy there, huddled and ill, and decide to give us a pass? Or did we really blend right into the landscape? At the time, I thought the latter. Now, I'm not so sure.

I didn't learn my lesson from that incident, but now I know better than to put other people in a position of having to *tell me.*

I'm not saying I'm a goody goody and never do anything against the rules since then. I have, and am sure I will again. But the dog rules in NParks cause me consternation. I don't LIKE the rules, but I understand why they have them. And I just can't pretend I am ignorant of them, or give a flippant attitude or play coy if busted any more. Thus, I have a new affinity for National Monuments and places like Sedona.....

Oh man.... I meant the Colorado National MOnument, and was just talking to a couple from Grand Junction when I was in Blanding. I specifically asked if it was dog friendly and they said yes. I guess one person's dog friendly(you can have them in your campsite and walk along the paved roads) is another persons not dog-friendly(paying $20 for a day pass when I can only drive through and wish I could see things closer.

When I went to Bryce Canyon, and couldn't go "be amongst" the hoodoos, that was when I got a burr under my saddle about the national parks. Sure, it was a *nice* walk I was allowed to have Lucas with me, but it was paved for accessibility, and when I tied Lucas to a post so I could take a picture, I was IMMEDIATELY told by a ranger that was not okay. I mean as soon as the knot was tied.

I guess I won't be visiting the Colorado National Monument, even with the free excuse(can't lie, at least not with a planned in advance one.).

Oh well, I will do something out by Fisher Towers instead as my "Last hurrah" before getting on the way back home.

Last year I camped at the climbers camp at Fisher Towers Trailhead. Did the Grandstaff Canyon hike, then camped there, and the next day was intending to hike Onion Creek but got sidetracked and walked up a 4wd road instead.

That would be okay again for one night I suppose, but it's a ways back to be doing hikes and coming back to it. So, would want to do something between Moab and there, and then maybe I would try the Onion Creek trail again the next day....and then one more day further toward Grand Junction.

Noticed a Mary Jane Canyon in some quick searches. That seems like it might be nice.

It was great to see you and Ferretlegger too, and Jaybro. I just love Moab(but I got what I'm going to call the "Moab Snub" today when a store clerk realized I was one of the *invasive species*).

So, I've got a few days before I begin to near the flooded zones of the midwest. I'm looking for information on areas I need to stay away from, but it's difficult for me to really understand how the various areas of Nebraska and Iowa are impacted. Maybe some of you can advise if I need to reroute.

Once I leave Colorado Springs, CO, I have a couple options, but usually end up passing through Grand Island, Nebraska. It seems like between Colorado Springs and Wisconsin is the region I have to figure out.

I haven't really paid attention to the news as to the areas impacted, just saw some pictures of devastated lands, and when I look for information, it's so localized that I am struggling to find some of the areas on my atlas.

It looks like crossing the Missouri River is the problem area, but how far north or south would I want to be to avoid being blocked or in the way of cleanups?

I can go across a more southern route through Kansas, but at some point I need to head north into southeastern Wisconsin. I'd like to minimize mileage, and usually veer NE from Grand Island, NE ending up on HWY 151 coming into Wisconsin. But thinking that could be problematic.

Leaving Grand Junction this morning with a stop in Gunnison and then Salida for the night.

I am nervous to get near the Missouri and then crossing the Miss. I found a road closures page online for the former and that helped. I'm detouring north a bit after Grand Island, NE. Going through Sioux City, which my younger sister once had to move to when her pilot husband landed a job there. She found it so....something..that she couldn't do it, and moved out after two months. He was never there, being a pilot, so it all worked out. I wonder what I'll think of the town.

Oh jeez... I've had such an increase in sales with my jewelry that I wasn't counting on a dry spell...haha.

I'm stalled in a town right now that I've pretty much seen all there's to see, and am eating up my buffer time for when I told my boss I'd be back in NY.

Most of the town is clean as a whistle, to the point the boys and young men look like mama just scrubbed their faces red, and the hair gunk keeps that 1950's forehead swirl perfectly styled, but there's always one in the crowd that won't toe the line!

Anyway-if someone's been thinking about a chalkbag or piece of jewelry, now would be a really great time to get it!(PayPal preferred at this time).

Today I got pulled over on I-80 by a trooper who said I was drifting over the rumble strips several times.....

The same excuse was given several years ago on I-10 when I was nearly straddling the border, and I figured they thought "crappy van, NY plates....maybe they have illegals in the rig."

Neither time was I going over the strips. You kind of know when you do that.....

Anyway, this time, the cop, who was very nice, said that he'd pulled me over for that, but when I stopped he saw I had a brake light out too.

Grrrrrr - thing is, that brake light has gone off and come back on a few times over the last two years. I guess it probably needs the connection cleaned.

Anyway, he was going to give me a 10-Day on it, and actually asked me to come sit in his police car while he wrote the warning.

Soon as we get in there his phone rings. They've been calling him on the radio, but he wasn't in the car. Don't know why he didn't have his radio on with him while coming to my car but - he's needed, with his K-9 partner (named Luke, and who has been barking in the back seat) pronto. He says "Lucky Day - I gotto go!"

So, lucky me.

It kind of irks me, though, that police pull you over just because they feel like it. I learned my lesson the first time in AZ. I said "I wasn't going over the lines." And he got huffy and said "Are you calling me a liar?" So this time I said :Well, maybe the wind was blowing me around." Because it was windy and I was having to be careful so as NOT to get blown off when another vehicle was near.

The other thing - The floor covering on the passenger side of that cop car was made of a material that made it damned near impossible to get a footing. I felt like I was on a giant banana peel trying to get in! Maybe this is in case someone hijacks a cop in his car - the jacker would be at a pretty good disadvantage, at least if they tried to use their legs for leverage.

So.....I'm gonna put out another plea - If you need a new chalkbag, or want to get a pendant - maybe for a Mother Day gift..... - your purchase will go directly to gas, and a little food, to get me back to NY. Here's a picture of the newest piece - A pretty Tiffany Stone cabochon of my cutting, set in a delicate woven frame.

Oh man, is it windy! I thought at one point I blew a tire, the van had a moment of bucking.... But it was just the first good wind chop.

I kept saying "You can pull over and bivy, and I would pull into the rest stop and walk Lucas, who doesn't realize it is no longer nice and sunny out, and then I'd look at the map and decide to get to some point, and then kept going...."

The wind has stopped - it was awful. I had no idea how stressful it was driving yesterday until I stopped, had something to eat and then struggled to do anything but crawl into bed.

This morning the wind was even worse, plus it was raining. NOAA said the wind would shift to south in the afternoon, so I decided to wait before getting on the road. It's definitely better now, almost even some sun - but not quite. And I am wasted from the stress of yesterday.

I made a bad decision and ran further than I should have, not having a gas gauge. On a normal day, I get 10-12 MPG, so at 200 miles driven since filled, I start looking for gas. I passed so many places at 150, 160, 180 miles but nooooo, I decided to go to the intended stopping point, which I figured was at 205 miles since filled.

At 199 miles, I heard the "ping" of the last gas go through - about the same time as I put on my turn signal for the upcoming exit. Rolled as far as I could, and got off the hwy and to the side of the exit ramp at the base. It was so f'in cold and windy - what a stupid decision, when I knew the winds would diminish my gas mileage.

Anyway, my boss has emailed me that I'm on the schedule for next Friday, 4/19, which was pretty hopeful on his part, since last month I said I expected to arrive between 4/15-18 and would advise as I got closer. I had intended to email him yesterday and update him with a 4/20 expected arrival.

Exhausted today and just going to go about 150 miles.

Dare I tempt fate by saying I'm almost back to NY? But, I am!

Tonight I am in Warren, Ohio, which is northeast corner, 20 miles from border to Pennsylvania. About 450 miles to go. So, depending on how tomorrow goes, I'll either get home late Monday or around noon Tuesday.

Today I almost had a cow.....

No, really!

I was driving along on hwy 6, I think it was. Going along a country road, with Main Streets of small old-timey towns interspersed.

In one country section, I'm going along at 55mph, and gaining on a pickup pulling an animal trailer.

Not gaining fast, but definitely closing the gap.

So I assume the driver is just going a slower rate - reasonable, with an animal trailer.

As I go to pass the rig, and am ALMOST at front of van coming ahead of the tail of the trailer, the rig starts MOVING INTO THE LANE I'm passing in....!!!!111

I slam my brakes, and honk my horn, becasue if it's just the braking, it might not be enough. The cattleman has to stop coming over to save us all.

And, luckily he did.

He was making a turn to the right, and going wide like a semi truck driver would do.

Only semi truck drivers tend to use turn signals, and brake lights. And they probably usually CHECK to see if there's someone coming up behind them even WITH a signal going... This guy had none of that. I doubt the trailer had the lights hooked up. Else they would have lit up!

It was the closest I have ever come to an accident since I was a kid and ran a stop sign that was obscured by trees and a big camper parked on the side of the road.

But luckily all okay. My dishes bin and beads bin both slid forward from under the bead, but Lucas was safe. He was in his doggy bed on the floor behind the driver side, which is kept in place by the cooler. Sometimes he rides on top of the bed, watching out the front window. Or sits in the passenger seat. He would have gone for a slide if he had been in either of those spots.

And the thought of what would have happened to the animals in the trailer....

Glad all that happened was my ire getting raised.

My route is a little more convoluted that that Gnome...

Here's what I got
Out of Warren, Ohio on 82E
>62E to Mercer
>963 to Franklin
>62 to Warren
>6 to Smethport
>446 to...
>417 to Bolival
>90N to Corning
>86 to 209N to 44/55

Last year I didn't know if my pony could survive that hilly terrain, and maybe I shouldn't try it again, but I just don't like those big roads.

Yes Hill country!
Have I got this right - that you are taking Rt62 to Rt 86/17? all the way?

or are you dropping south somewhere? Taking Rt6? to Rt84? to Scranton?

I guess I could see that Especially "nice?" hilly & "backwater", from Gulf Summit all the way through Deposit, Rosco, Lock Sheldrake? I know that route, (edit/ but that is 30 years ago). I think that its a fun run going out
I'm not 2nd guessing, just to take it coming back?
It is 50 more miles, speed/time only 2 hours
but the work for the horse is near double.

Change in plans. I just decided to make it easy on myself..... It's going to be raining all day and hard tonight. The driving won't be fun, I won't stop and walk the towns, and there on't be bivy options that are easy.

Highway 80 here we come.

Edit: Your insights are correct. Police aren't an issue as I don't speed but yeah, it's mean to Penny, when she's been so loyal this trip, just throwing those brake shoes back in Quartzsite and can't blame an ole hoss for that! Shoes wear out.

The sputtering that got taken care of briefly with a tune-up did return, and that was what was making me dread those Alleghany hills last time.

So - taking the path of least resistance.

oh! good you're here
yes take Rt 80!
the other route you were looking at has some "struggling to make ends meet" territory - where opportunity can drive good people to take advantage...you seem well connected but do not hesitate to call for a rescue, the Gnome name all one word & NO capital letters or spaces GMail
If the weather has you struggling PERSEVERE, keep it at 60 & stop at the 180 mile markers. but you know all this
YOU GOT THIS WOMEN!
Here's TO good traveling!

I don't visit, no need to add to the hoard - but if I do,
I'll make a point of dancing your direction.(The Clove, Split Rock)

eDIT
I'm told the roads Rt 86/17 are fine, big/4 lane wide highways & less traffic on a Sunday, I forgot about that.
But Still, Rt80 is The shorter more flat route ...
checking the forecast? Once you get out of Ohio, it looks overcast and low winds out of the South-west?

I'm stopped a rest at mile 147 on I-80. It's been raining the whole way and sometimes pretty bad, but right now it's almost even not taking.

Going to stop for gas next town and who knows - I might even get home tonight, though I seriously doubt that.

I don't like to drive in the dark, especially on busy highways.

As for hard-times towns, there's something about them that I find intriguing. Seeing the remnants of past prosperity and imagining how the place was....

But as for head times - I forgot that the west side of Warren was what it is - abandoned massive industrial plants with "Available" signs up for years, as if those plants are ever going to see a tenant again....

Thursday's Child
by Aoife O'Donovan

I got nothing to hide, and I'm as naked as the day is born
In November and you know what they say
Thursday's child has far to go, don't I know.

I got far to go, should I leave you behind?
And drive to Alaska on Saturday night
These four walls around me are?

No one's riding shotgun, I'm driving alone
I can turn up the music and do whatever I want
When I get to the border, put a quarter in the payphone.

Oh, my tyranny's gonna crumble
And so, sit next to me and fumble
With the buttons on my dress
What do you wanna be?
I wanna be a poet.

To get down on my knees and unplug your drain
Get an ache in my bones every time that it rains
And when I look up at the sun in the sky, I tell time.

If something is leaking, just give me a call
There's a tear on your cheek, there's a crack in the wall
I can soak up the water with the folds of my black shawl.

Oh, my tyranny's gonna crumble
And so, sit next to me and fumble
With the buttons on my dress
What do you wanna do?
I wanna watch you stumble.

Stumble through this fertile land
In your pocket are both my hands
When you get to the other side
The northern lights and a blanket of white.

I wanted to be a singer, so I grew my hair long
I needed a guitar slinger to push me along
To fill out my verse and my chorus with a baritone.

I got nothing to hide, I'm laying it out there
Take it or leave it, you can't figure it out
Thursday's child has far to go, I'm gonna shatter.

Oh, my tyranny's gonna crumble
And so, sit next to me and fumble
With the buttons on my dress
Buttons on my dress
Buttons on my dress.

hahah - too funny.

This year, as last year, I have made a New Season Resolution to be kinder, gentler. I know that I noticed the difference last year, but it didn't seem like anyone else did. I still had my reputation as "the hard one," and got told to "lighten up!" even when I was a good 20 pounds lighter than I felt like I should have weighted in at....

I do wish I could have a laissez faire attitude, but ya know....I go to places where I'm surprised about the day fee, or need to show my pass or some of the things that people get up in arms about, and I just can't imagine being that way.

Anyway - my plan is to just smile and say "'m sorry you feel that way." At least as long as that lasts.....

Anyway - I'm taking it easy this last night on the road, and expect to be back at the cabin tomorrow about noontime. Unfortunately it's a rainy forecast, so I may be living out of the van even there for a few days! Tromping up that hill with all the stuff when it's muddy isn't much fun.

Just a confirmation that I did get back yesterday about 1pm. Van is kind of unpacked, and cabin is kind of set up. Lucas has already gotten a tick, though I think it might have been in Ohio or Pennsylvania since it was already attached.

Thanks Yury! I haven't been..... it's about 400 miles away, so doable. I'm going to research the event to see who is selling there and if it's good prices. I do have enough material to wait until next winter in Quartzsite where I know prices are as good as I can get, but it would be fun to go if I can get some money saved to buy enough material to make the cost associated with the travel worthwhile.

I'm kind of considering saving up about 5K for a set up (rock saw, trim saw,Grind/Polish machine, buff machine and associated items), but then will need a shop space. It's possible I could convince my place of work to let me do in their barn but...iffy, since it would technically be a commercial thing. More likely a better idea to see about renting space in someone's garage or something. I have always thought the old concrete block building in 44/55 in Gardiner that has the "liquor" sign on it would make a good studio. But all this wouldn't be until next year anyway.
