It's truly a tragdy. Ive worked side by side with latin American immigrants my whole life (legal). The characterizations are terrible and false. They pay taxes and work their asses off.
Now I'm going to be forced to build homes with yours and my sons- just imagine how that's going to work out...

What they're talking about are welfare moms in the ghetto. But the real problem is lack of available, affordable housing that allows couples to raise middle-class families. The high price of tuition also tends to lower middle-class ambitions to get their kids into the professions. No more low-interest Cal Vet and FHA loans either. The simple fact is that less and less people can afford to aspire to a middle-class lifestyle since they simply can't afford to pay for it. You just don't get solid medical, dental and retirement benefits working in the service industries. The real culprit is what no one like to really talk about is a lowering standard of living for a bigger and bigger segment of the American population. If you're part of that group and you wind up getting pregnant, it's like walking the plank into a life-time of poverty.

Seems that most who post on this thread are very partisan. Most who just peak into this thread understand that truth is the first casualty of partisanship.
My personal philosophy is similar to the wise men who wrote the constitution: Limited government.
Those wise men understood that more power equals more corruption.
That basic premise is where the concept of American exceptionalism comes from.
Americans are no better than people of any other country (and they may be more arrogant about their alleged superiority), but it is the concept of limited government that is truly exceptional in the history of civilization.

If you want the world to be a better place, look in the mirror and make yourself a better person.
This works very well for direct personal interactions. If everyone felt this way, the world would - indeed - be a better place.
Unfortunately, there is a broader world out there, and there is only so far our personal attempts to better ourselves go. If a kind, generous, law-abiding person moves themself and their family into a crime-ridden neighborhood, all the prayer and yoga in a day won't change the reality what's going on outside their window.
One doesn't have to choose between practicing self-improvement and being aware of a serious quake occurring around the geo-political world.
