So I'm starting to sample whiskey as a proxy for beer for a few reasons: (1) less calories and (2) packs easier for backpacking (which I'm beginning to really like). And I'm liking whiskey more each time I sample some.
My first foray into the whiskey world is below. Seems pretty good in comparison to regular Jack Daniels or other stuff. Question for whiskey aficionados: So where on the *reasonable* scale does this fly? Mid-range? I know you can pay beaucoup dollars for certain whiskeys. The stuff below I got for $37 and should last a long time considering the amount I drink at any one sitting. And I like it.

Whisky fans?
Yes!
A swig and swallow every night before bed kills germs (those cavies producers) and puts the brakes on all that out-of-control discursive thinking.
Better than Listerine.
Better than meditation. (See Mind thread.)

My dad told me when I graduated high school, that I'd come to know a couple truths:
"You'll grow to appreciate whiskey with less water and your meat a little more rare."

Bourbon is a good place to start the journey...
But also make sure you know the difference between Whiskey and Whisky. Don't ever call it Whiskey in Scotland : )
I honestly can even drink beer anymore I just don't enjoy it. Too much liquid and not enough complexity.

Whisky, whiskey.
Still the devil's brew. Yet, I occasionally drink Powers. A good single malt is also nice.
Quick story. I was editor of Training Personnel, a fortnightly HRD mag out of Wembley (Stonebridge Park actually).
Since my mag covered training venues I was invited by Embassy Hotels Scotland to spend a weekend at one of their hotels. I chose The Caledonian, in Inverness.
They flew me up from Heathrow and had a rental car waiting for me at the Inverness Airport.
That first night, Friday, I had a sumptuous meal in the hotel. Then the general manager, Graham Small, invited me to taste some Scotch. I kid you not, we had about 22 different Scotches (Oban is lovely), just tastes mind you, but enough to make me very tipsy.
Needless to say, I gave them a good write up in my mag.
I still prefer Irish though. It is smoother, it goes through an extra distillation process, for the most part, there are differences.
I remember the adverts on the London Underground. The top part would show a Highland Thistle (rough) and the bottom part of the ad, a shamrock. "The smoother the Irish."
Or
A Shetland Pony in the wet wind, and the bottom part, an Irish Thoroughbred in the green pastures, "The smoother the Irish."
Burbon? Got sick of it when I was ten at a friends house (raided the mother's liquor cabinet). Rye, not to my taste. Sourmash, Jack is nice.
But in my eyes, nothing beats the Irish. Uisce beatha.

BINGO! Thanks. This talks to my neophyte level of whiskey knowledge.

Tadman, Jefferson's and Blantons are nice bourbons. Blanton's is a favorite when I find it. I have not had Jefferson's Ocean burbon but I like the other ones I've tried.

Gunkie, have you not run into Whisky Mike? I'm sure he could offer some perspective on this subject.

Pappy..a good expensive and rare drink..I lately have been liking the 'wheated" bourbons (I think Pappy is wheated). You should try WL Weller Special Reserve. Comes out of the same distillery as Buffalo Trace and Pappy. Its a bargain. I also hear, and this might just be BS, that WSR is Pappy that didn't make the cut. Who knows but it is an excellent bourbon.
