Hosmer to Padres for 8 years and 144 large...

So, the deal is structured (per MLBTR) as $20M, 20, 20, 20, 20, 13, 13, 13, with a $5M signing bonus. Full no trade for 3 years, then limited no trade. Opt out after year 5.

I thought long term deals were done with... Padres will be choking on this one for a while.

which organization is going to sign JD Martinez? I don't see Boston getting JDM to (Mamet) "sign on the line which is dotted"

dude rakes. Pads get Hosmer but the best offensive free agent is this guy.

I'd like to see him go to Minnesota

Looks like Steven Souza will be bringing his comedy act to Arizona.

Between this play and his strikeout rate they might want to get his eyes checked.

For the next few weeks, I will be dribbling out my projections, division by division, for the edification of no one.

Today -- AL West:

1. Astros. Far and away the best.
2. Angels. Will surprise many in 2018.
3. Mariners. Will finish the season within 2 games of .500 on either side.
4. A's. For real.
5. Rangers. Texas sucks.

today -- NL East:

1. Mets. Love the de Grom-Syndegaard one-two punch at the top.
2. Nats. Probably better than the Mets, in all likelihood
3. Phillies. Philly is well-positioned to clean up on FAs going into 2019.
4. Braves. Young, dumb, and full of L's
5. Marlins. Are they even MLB-caliber in 2018?

As far as I'm concerned, the games can't get here soon enough.

Predictions? The A's win 102 games and beat the Dodgers in a classic, 7-game World Series.

(Hey, it's March 5.)

But seriously, if we get average or better starting pitching (which might be a long shot), we'll be competitive. The lineup turned a corner in the second half last season and the bullpen should be much improved.

Ichiro is back with the Mariners. Recent injuries (???not again!!!) to the projected starting outfield have created need for options. What a story that will be if it all works out. Of course if it doesn't (he's 44 years old), it'll just be more of the same for long suffering Mariners fans.

Busy day in the Rangers camp.

Tim Lincecum checked in. Unfortunately he had been delayed to attend his brothers funeral.

Annnd, Big Sexy was on the mound. Bart gave up 2 unearned runs on 5 hits. (one was a double by Matt Olsen) 1 walk and 2 Ks over 2 2/3 filled out his line.

interesting Ichiro piece in ESPN online the other day

My Central predictions for both leagues today

AL Central:
1. Indians. Apparently Cleveland is getting rid of the Chief Wahoo logo next year, so enjoy or ridicule it while you can.
2. Twins. Possible WC2 finish in '18. Buxton is coming into his own.
3. Royals. Because someone has to finish in front of ...
4. Tigers. Does Miggy have anything in his bat?
5. White Sox. Sox being Sox.

NL Central:
1. Cubs. The once and future World Champions.
2. Cards.
3. Brewers. Team to watch. They could usurp the Cubs-Cards NL Central hegemony.
4. Reds.
5. Pirates.

and my final division picks

AL East
1. Boston. JD Martinez signing seals the pennant.
2. New York. Judge-Stanton-Sanchez might produce 160 HR ... but where's the pitching?
3. Baltimore. Buck Showalter is known to make lemonade out of lemons. Is Chris Davis going to hit again?
4. Tampa Bay. Starting with the season with 4-man rotation. Cagey.
5. Toronto. Just killing time for the locals until the Leafs lace up.

NL West
1. Los Angeles. But will they win the WS? [No.]
2. Colorado. Or maybe Arizona.
3. Arizona. Or maybe Colorado.
4. San Francisco. Old men in pitcher's park means lots of losses.
5. San Diego. But at least the Hoz is around to make things lively.

Ohtani can't hit the curve and is running a double digit ERA... like around 16+!!

Could be trouble, even at his bargain rate. I see some AA ball in his future

Ohtani is Japanese for ‘hyped’, or ‘poorly scouted’.

Might have to munch on some crow about my bad mouthing Matt Kemp.
Dude has been impressive, so far.

Justin Turner out with a broken wrist... man that sucks. Good thing them Dodgers have Kike and that shortstop/centerfielder guy Taylor or Forsythe

Maybe Kemp can play third?

Maybe Kemp can play third?

Don’t troll me, braj! He might have the skills but he would break down in a flash. This could
be a gud thang in that some guys could get some decent playing time.

Donini and I just bet a bottle of wine on the 2018 season.

I've got the A's, he has the Angels.

Regular season record with head-to-head record as the tiebreaker.

I just want him to digest his new hero's Shohei Ohtani's spring training stats. They're . . . extra-ordinary:

As a bat, he's swatting .107/.219/.107/.326

Jim, help me understand those stats. . .

Doesn't that mean that your new star gets a hit about one out of every ten at-bats?
And gets on base twice in every ten plate appearances?
Is that good?

As an arm, the great Ohtani has pitched 2.2 innings, given up 9 hits, 9 runs, 8 earned runs, 3 home runs, walked 2, and struck out 5.

He also has 1 HBP and a WHIP of 4.125.

4 HBP per 9 innings pitched shows serious aggression, right? I suppose that when he can't quite manage to catch the inside corner, he likes to establish the batting box instead.

His rate stats are 30.4 hits per 9, 10.1 home runs per 9 innings and 6.8 walks per 9 (big numbers are better, right Jim?)

Although I suppose there is some hope in his 16.9 SO per 9.

His ERA is an even 27.00. Round numbers are good in baseball, aren't they? That's like three touchdowns! No, wait, four—with a missed extra point. In only 2.2 innings!

All I can say is fit this guy out for Cooperstown! Or the California League. He's clearly on his way to the hall of fame.
