It's never too early...

Pitchers and Catchers report on Feb 13/14 for most teams. Full squads about a 5 days later.

For now, a great show just came out on MLB Network... Billy : the Billy Martin story. Lots of really good stuff about Billy, George, and the whole circus. Check it out.

Winter meetings are winding down... Stanton to the Yanks? Damn they got some sock now. Angels looking good even with Ohtani and his platelet infused elbow.

So far:
Monday
New York Yankees – Acquired OF Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins for INF Starlin Castro, INF Jose Devers and RHP Jorge Guzman.
Tampa Bay Rays – Acquired 2B Joey Wendle from the Oakland Athletics for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Seattle Mariners – Claimed OF Caumeron Perkins off waivers from the Phillies.
St. Louis Cardinals – Signed free agent RHP Miles Mikolas.

Tuesday
Chicago Cubs – Signed free agents RHP Brandon Morrow and LHP Drew Smyly.
San Diego Padres – Acquired 3B Chase Headley and RHP Bryan Mitchell from the Yankees for OF Jabari Blash.
Rays – Acquired 2B Ryan Schimpf from the Padres for INF Deion Tansel.

Wednesday
Los Angeles Angels – Acquired 2B Ian Kinsler from the Detroit Tigers for RHP Wilkel Hernandez and OF Troy Montgomery.
Minnesota Twins – Signed free agent RHP Michael Pineda.
Seattle Mariners – Acquired RHP Shawn Armstrong from the Cleveland Indians for international slot money.
Miami Marlins – Released RHP Edinson Volquez.
Houston Astros – Signed free agent RHP Joe Smith.

Thursday
Oakland Athletics – Acquired RF Stephen Piscotty from the Cardinals for 2B Max Schrock and SS Yairo Munoz.
Texas Rangers – Signed free agents RHP Kevin Jepsen, 3B Hanser Alberto.
Cardinals – Acquired Marcell Ozuna from the Marins for RHP Sandy Alcantara, OF Magneuris Sierra, RHP Zac Gallen and LHP Daniel Castano. Signed free agent RHP Luke Gregerson.

Anyone got any bets they want to place? I could be a gamer.

Go Cubs!!!!

WS brew knocked it dead! Killed off a couple kegs... but have 6 still remaining of various brews...

Giants would have been a lot better with Stanton... They'll be ok if they can fill couple spots. Oakland will probably still stink. Cubs will be good but Dodgers will be better...

Early prediction: Cubs and Yanks World Series. Red Sox close, Dodgers choke. Houston will have the WS hangover. Angels will make a run but fail again in Sept. Washington...pfffft, no winning culture there.

I thought about starting an Ohtani thread awhile ago but that all fizzled out pretty quickly. Bummed he didn't decide on Seattle, but as our GM said, "hey, he's a 23 year old kid, who can figure out what a 23 year old kid is going to want? Maybe he really liked the Angel's uniforms" My bet is that his "two-way" days will be short lived, its just too complicated from a 25 man roster, 5 man rotation standpoint if he get's dinged up while batting or playing the field.

The biggest question that remains now is, where is Ichiro going to play this year?

Lot of NL sentiment here....unfortunately the light is shining brightest for the AL. They won the Interleague series AGAIN last year and the WS and now Ohtani and Stanton will reside there.
Go Angels!
One can never forget the Dodgers sneaking out of Brooklyn like thieves in the night.

The Angels say they need a six man rotation for Ohtani. They'll have six starters for sure...on the DL! As usual. Ohtani will be on the DL come June.

They signed a washed up Kinsler. That's exciting.

@Ken_Rosenthal
Just announced: #Dodgers get Matt Kemp from #Braves for Adrian Gonzalez, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy, Charlie Culberson and cash.
11:37 AM - Dec 16, 2017//

Wow! McCarthy and Culberson were ok... glad that other deadwood is gone, but for Matt Kemp???

#SalaryDump

*to add: Gonzalez was immediately designated for assignment by the Braves

The deal: (from TrueBlueLA.com) Gonzalez, as someone with more than 10 years of major league experience and five with the same team, had a no-trade clause that he had to waive for the deal to go through. His reward for waiving the no-trade clause was eventual free agency, as Gonzalez was designated for assignment by Atlanta.

A similar fate could await Kemp, but we’ll see in the coming days or weeks.

This deal, more than anything, was about lessening the Dodgers’ luxury tax burden for 2018. The competitive balance tax measures payroll by average annual value so for next year here’s what the Dodgers were able to do:

Shed:
Gonzalez ($22 million)
Kazmir (~$15 million)
McCarthy ($12 million)

Take on:
Kemp ($16.5 million; $20 million AAV minus the $3.5 million they were already paying)
Cash to Braves ($4.5 million)

That lops roughly $28 million off the Dodgers’ luxury tax number for 2018, which in November we estimated to be about $204 million. That puts the Dodgers under the $197 million tax threshold with some room to maneuver without going over.

Giants get Longoria from Rays
The Giants have acquired third baseman Evan Longoria from the Rays, a source told MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi. In return, Tampa Bay is receiving San Francisco's No. 1-ranked prospect, shortstop Christian Arroyo, outfielder Denard Span and pitchers Matt Krook (No. 25) and Stephen Woods (No. 29), according to Yahoo! And Baez needs to start hitting.

True dat... he has to cut down on the strikeouts or hit more bombs... pick one. I'd like to see him at around 20 bombs, 200 hits, and a .315 avg.

Mets grab Jay Bruce... 3 years for 39 large.

Starlin Castro wants traded out of Florida before he ever plays a game there!! He was part of the Giancarlo Stanton trade.

Giants still looking at McCutcheon from Pirates. Maybe moreso now that Bruce has been snagged. They need an outfielder bad.

Darvish is shopping his wares all over the place. One place I don't think he will end up is back in LA.

Agent Jason Wood was fired for secretly filming players in the shower. I wonder if he has any vid of Bartolo Colon... I'd watch that for science.

Yankees looking at Manny Machado...

Rafael Palmeiro still thinks he has it at 53 and is shopping vid of him in the batting cage... ain't the juice grand?

Good column in LA Times today by Bill Plaschke on why the Dodgers should let Yu walk.
I tend to agree that he is a head case and has lost his mojo. I definitely agree he isn’t worth
$100 million for 5 years. Everybody talks about his ‘stuff’ but his numbers do not overwhelm.
Knowing the Dodgers they’ll re-sign him for $120 for 4 years.

Houston signs Gerrit Cole from the Pirates...

Rotation is stacked!
From Yahoo sports:
The World Series champion Astros add Cole, the former 19-game winner, to a rotation already armed with Justin Verlander, Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers Jr. and Charlie Morton.

Looks like rebuild time for the Pirates... maybe now McCutchen can go to SF??

Sunday: LA's Adrian Gonzalez goes to the Mets!
He will earn $21.5 million in 2018, with the Mets paying him the major league minimum of $545,000 and the Braves on the hook for the rest.

Monday: McCutchen goes to Giants!

I've been following it for years....

Most interesting takeaway of the HOF thing is all the old guys are anti PED... the new writers that are able to vote are voting for Bonds and Clemens at a 99% rate. So, they will get in as soon as enough old goats die off. The next wave of voters seem to not give a sh#t. That is sad.

Edit to add: Charlie Hustle FOR SURE. Biggest slight in the history of the game, if not all of sport.

I did the guinea pig nuts thing for a while... did nothing for me.

As for greenies et al... the do not equate with steroids as far as physical advantage goes. Greenies will not make your 390ft fly ball go 406... your one hopper to the shortstop into a screaming liner, or your rapid recovery from injury that makes a lizard growing a new tail look like nothing.

Amphetamines were a big part of the game back when, no doubt. But the freakish power and record distorting attributed to steroids is unequaled, and not just in baseball.

Hey Russ,

Too bad about the Cubs this year (2018), eh?

You did get some of your revised 2017 pre-WS predictions right last year, but you still missed a few.

For my part I'm not nearly as good at predicting so I won't venture any guesses. Had to get your goat (hahahha) with the Cubs condolences though.

PED fueled careers don't seem fair to those who made the HoF pre-era. At least to me. Seems kind of like chipping holds to do moves instead of using what's there. Rose is a different story.

As a manager, meh. Had he not gotten into betting it would make things much simpler. Like a slam dunk.

I used to feel different. Being a Dodger fan the Reds were a royal PITA in the 70s. Hated Rose, and that whole crew. Guess I've mellowed over time. There is no doubt he was one hell of a player, and pre PED, which I still think matters.

Don't you wonder why Rose reached that agreement with Giamatti?

"Peter Edward Rose is hereby declared permanently ineligible in accordance with Major League Rule 21 and placed on the Ineligible List."

"Rose will conclude these proceedings before the commissioner without a hearing and the commissioner will not make any formal findings or determinations on any matter including without limitation the allegation that Peter Edward Rose bet on any major league baseball games.... Nothing in this agreement shall be deemed either an admission or denial by Peter Edward Rose of the allegation that he bet on any major league baseball game"

And you all don't think he was betting as a player? You think sometimes he didn't owe some bucks to the wise guys? "Hey, Charlie Hustle, dat's a real nice house youse got. It'd be a shame if sumtin' was to happen to it. It might be smart to strikeout against Jenkins tomorrow."

Pete Rose violated the ultimate professional sports no-no. He bet on his own sport, and although he likely never bet against his own team, if he bet on his own team that is equally corrupting...

If you don't understand why, you don't understand sports gambling...

Because he wouldn't have bet on ALL of his own team's games, only on those games where he liked the "price." (You do know you don't bet on baseball games in terms of straight win-lose, right? You bet on them with a "price", ie with odds like 2-1, except that baseball prices almost never rise that high, but you get the point.)

And that decision would have been observed by his bookies, who would have promptly chosen to bet on those games, too. And would have bet against Charlie Hustle's teams when Rose chose not to bet.

And Charlie would have played a little harder in games where he had money on the line.

The reason Rose accepted the lifetime ban is also obvious—he knew the evidence against him and knew he wouldn't have survived an open-court trial.

(I have some credibility in this regard--some of the proceeds of the numbers racket my dear departed dad ran at his bars are in a very well funded 529 plan that is going to pay for my son's college education.)

Did you read the rest of the post? That's the important point.

What gamblers want is an edge.

The information of what games Rose chose to bet on—or not bet on—even if he was betting on his own team was exactly the sort of "edge" a professional gambler is looking for.

Super corrupting.

Hosmer to Padres for 8 years and 144 large...

So, the deal is structured (per MLBTR) as $20M, 20, 20, 20, 20, 13, 13, 13, with a $5M signing bonus. Full no trade for 3 years, then limited no trade. Opt out after year 5.

Today -- AL West:

4. A's. For real.

Predictions? The A's win 102 games and beat the Dodgers in a classic, 7-game World Series.

(Hey, it's March 5.)

But seriously, if we get average or better starting pitching (which might be a long shot), we'll be competitive. The lineup turned a corner in the second half last season and the bullpen should be much improved.

Ichiro is back with the Mariners. Recent injuries (???not again!!!) to the projected starting outfield have created need for options. What a story that will be if it all works out. Of course if it doesn't (he's 44 years old), it'll just be more of the same for long suffering Mariners fans.

interesting Ichiro piece in ESPN online the other day

My Central predictions for both leagues today

AL Central:
1. Indians. Apparently Cleveland is getting rid of the Chief Wahoo logo next year, so enjoy or ridicule it while you can.
2. Twins. Possible WC2 finish in '18. Buxton is coming into his own.
3. Royals. Because someone has to finish in front of ...
4. Tigers. Does Miggy have anything in his bat?
5. White Sox. Sox being Sox.

NL Central:
1. Cubs. The once and future World Champions.
2. Cards.
3. Brewers. Team to watch. They could usurp the Cubs-Cards NL Central hegemony.
4. Reds.
5. Pirates.

and my final division picks

AL East
1. Boston. JD Martinez signing seals the pennant.
2. New York. Judge-Stanton-Sanchez might produce 160 HR ... but where's the pitching?
3. Baltimore. Buck Showalter is known to make lemonade out of lemons. Is Chris Davis going to hit again?
4. Tampa Bay. Starting with the season with 4-man rotation. Cagey.
5. Toronto. Just killing time for the locals until the Leafs lace up.

NL West
1. Los Angeles. But will they win the WS? [No.]
2. Colorado. Or maybe Arizona.
3. Arizona. Or maybe Colorado.
4. San Francisco. Old men in pitcher's park means lots of losses.
5. San Diego. But at least the Hoz is around to make things lively.

Donini and I just bet a bottle of wine on the 2018 season.

I've got the A's, he has the Angels.

Regular season record with head-to-head record as the tiebreaker.

I just want him to digest his new hero's Shohei Ohtani's spring training stats. They're . . . extra-ordinary:

As a bat, he's swatting .107/.219/.107/.326

Jim, help me understand those stats. . .

Doesn't that mean that your new star gets a hit about one out of every ten at-bats?
And gets on base twice in every ten plate appearances?
Is that good?

As an arm, the great Ohtani has pitched 2.2 innings, given up 9 hits, 9 runs, 8 earned runs, 3 home runs, walked 2, and struck out 5.

He also has 1 HBP and a WHIP of 4.125.

4 HBP per 9 innings pitched shows serious aggression, right? I suppose that when he can't quite manage to catch the inside corner, he likes to establish the batting box instead.

His rate stats are 30.4 hits per 9, 10.1 home runs per 9 innings and 6.8 walks per 9 (big numbers are better, right Jim?)

Although I suppose there is some hope in his 16.9 SO per 9.

His ERA is an even 27.00. Round numbers are good in baseball, aren't they? That's like three touchdowns! No, wait, four—with a missed extra point. In only 2.2 innings!

All I can say is fit this guy out for Cooperstown! Or the California League. He's clearly on his way to the hall of fame.

he was hit by a pitch from future teammate George Stone of the Atlanta Braves,[10] fracturing his right wrist. He played through the pain for several weeks until X-rays revealed the broken bone.[11][12] Surgery was required

Tad: We came in 4th at the GeezerBall Worlds... in an epic collapse, we go into the last inning tied... we are on fire and score 13 runs for a commanding lead. Score was something like 11 to 11 going into that inning. They come up in the bottom of the 7th and score 14 to win the game and send us home instead of to the Championship game. He can't keep this up all season, right?

Ohtani became the first player in 99 years to win two games and hit three home runs within the first 10 games of a season. The last: Jim Shaw, he of the "Grunting Jim" nickname, for the 1919 Washington Senators.

In those first 10 games, Ohtani has a 2.08 earned-run average and a .389 batting average. He leads the team in wins, and he is tied with Trout and Justin Upton for the team lead in home runs.

...

He became the third player in major league history with a double-digit strikeout game and a home run in three consecutive games, joining Babe Ruth (1916) and Ken Brett (1973).

Ohtani tied an Angels record with 18 strikeouts in his first two games. He tied the American League record with 12 strikeouts in one of his first two starts.

...Ohtani has more home runs than either Kris Bryant or Aaron Judge, more strikeouts than either Chris Sale or Max Scherzer.

Love those photos of the splendid splinter. In that last one, where he's just made contact with the ball, it sure looks like both his feet are almost off the ground, maybe the point of his front foot is still down. But all his weight was projected into the ball. Pretty amazing.

Can't wait for a possible Ohtani-Ichiro showdown, although the first chance won't be until the first week of May - if Ohtani's turn in the rotation comes up, and if Ichiro is still with the club. That last one could be a big if. Oh well, the life of a baseball fan, hope springs eternal.

Of course if I really want to hope for something it should be for Ichiro to pitch to Ohtani. I almost forgot, Ichiro has pitching lines in his MLB stats. I think he knew Ohtani was coming over to the USA this year and so wanted to beat him to the record for first Japanese MLB player to both hit, field and pitch in the bigs. Note: Ichi pitched in the last game of 2017 of a losing season for the Marlins, who also probably knew he'd be packing his bags for some other team in 2018, and so gave him his final wish in his last inning in a Marlins uni.

I went to my annual Mariners game yesterday. The game was painful for this lukewarm Mariners fan(me), but I saw one of the stranger stretches of baseball.

4th inning, A triple play against Houston: runners on first and second, batter Gattis shoots a ball to Seager at 3rd, steps on 3rd, throws to 2nd for the second out. So that's 5-4 typical & clean DP, but the batter Gattis forgot(?) that there had been no outs, so after the DP he wandered across the infield to be tagged out after a confusing throw to first. You don't see one of those every day. That kept the Mariners in it, gave us hope as Marco Gonzales was actually pitching quite well.

Around that time a Mariner lined a ball off of pitcher Morton's back, only to have it caught on the fly by SS for an out. Somewhere in that stretch, there was a tailor made DP ground ball hit by Houston that M. Gonzales deflected to make everyone safe.

Houston is good though. In the 5th a couple misplayed balls and a mis-positioned outfield gave Altuve a 3 RBI double to right center field. Ichiro didn't play, and it ended up being 9-2 Houston. It was a spectacular day though. Marco Gonzales looked really good for 3 innings, I like seeing Altuve play, and one doesn't see a triple play very often.

I listened to it.

I almost always go the radio route rather than TV. Usually I'm working away with the game on in the background. But with this one I just lay on the couch and gave myself over to the action starting with the top of the 7th. Totally awesome. Then went back and watched the highlights once they got posted. Love the smile that breaks out on Manaea's face as the last out gets made. 6'5", 240-pound little leaguer who knows he just did something good. "The Baby Giraffe" is his clubhouse nickname, apparently, which is perfect.

And then Khris Davis mashed a 3-run job for the series win yesterday.

I only caught the botom of the eighth, on my drive back from the gym, when Price gives up the home run after a well pitched game (like Sales' game the night before).

A couple of years ago I looked at the Red Sox play at the Coliseum over the years, having had the feeling that they didn't really win much, and confirmed in the record just that... independent of how well either team did in a given year... probably more to do with the BoSox reliance on power hitting and the power-suck of the night air in Oakland, and maybe the lack of Oakland power pitching. You can't win if you don't score. Saturday's no-no was just a very well pitched game, props to Manaea, even if it makes him trade bait for Oakland.

2003 was a sweet exception, after loosing the first two playoff games in Oakland, Boston won the next two in Fenway, then came back for a day game (3:05pm start) with a dramatic end with a bit of controversy...

...not shown was the absolute silence before that last pitch, with 40,000+ fans in the stadium you could hear a pin drop, it was eerie. My daughter and I snuck out in a sea of very disappointed A's fans. While Red Sox nation showed up, they were very outnumbered by A's supporters (unusual, when these teams meet it's usually a BoSox fan filled stadium). I remember the Baby Ruth candy bars being thrown into the Red Sox dugout by literate A's denizens.

Still waiting for another playoff series between these two clubs...

I base my loyalties on the excitement a team provides, not on where they play. So far this year my excitement rankings are:
1) Angels
2) Yankees
3) Boston
What is this affiliation thing with where a team plays all about? The owners only want to get you in the stands and blind allegiance plays into their hands at not having to spend money to provide a good product.
The players don’t care about the city they play in, they do care about their contracts and whether or not the team they play on is competitive.
I will always follow the excitement a team provides and that is dependent on the players on their roster.
If Mike Trout ever leaves the Angels, I probably will to.

Mostly bullsh#t... ever hear of hometown discount? Grown men cry when they get traded away from "their" team... lots of guys in the Bigs dream of playing for the home team since they were little kids, and when they eventually do, there is a strong bond there.

The competitive angle is the only thing you got almost right.

Nope... the majority of players feed off the fans and the way the game is going, actually play to the fans with bat flips and antics to rile them up. Ever watch any Latin ball? With 30% of MLB being Latin these days, the fans are no doubt a large component to their style of game.

Dodgers warming up, Cubs being an all or none offense, DBacks coming back to earth after playing well above their heads.

it's definitely a congenital disease... born in Boston, the first game I went to at age 6 was at Fenway, a vivid memory of walking through the dark cave area and seeing the startling green field as you make your way out into the stands.

What is definitely an advantage of being a BoSox fan is the fact that you can go to the same stadium at age 64 that you went to at age 6... not many baseball fans can do that.

The current franchise is not doing to badly compared to all those years that I followed them... my dear grandmother never saw them win the championship, but every spring she'd chirp those optimistic words "this year is our year"

I can do that at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. Back in the day when major league teams would play exhibition games on off days during the season I saw my first major league game there: White Sox v. Reds.

How do they calculate spinrate? That seems like a tough one unless you have the superslowmo guy sitting there counting rotations...

Stratcast is radar and high speed cameras and a lot of software...

this system was introduced in 2016 (I believe) and the data coming from it will get better and better as people crunch the numbers.

Measuring the trajectory and the velocity of the ball you can infer the Mangus force which depends on spin-rate and back it out from the math...

Mookie is fun to watch, and the BoSox seem to be in a good place.

It's surprising (but maybe not) that Hanley and The Panda who were acquisitions for the BoSox in late 2014 never really lived up to expectations for power hitting. I don't think anyone watching thought that Mookie would be the power bat in the lineup.

It seems that this year's BoSox was what people expected last year. And with Cora as manager, and somewhat relaxed about it (at least in terms of making the apparently bold moves with the data at hand) has the team playing well.

I'm not sure that Pedroia is going to make it back, he plays a really physical game and it's been 12 years (I remember seeing him play in Oakland in 2006, and against the Giants that same year, and thinking that he was "undersized"). But making room for him forced the management's hand, or at least had them take a deep look at the roster.

It is one thing to believe the physics of baseball is more than just interesting, but you have to figure out how to throw the ball to tap into the physics... and it seems that modern pitchers are eager to get an edge.

I suspect that as those skills are developed it will make the game even more interesting to watch (at least interesting for me).

A group that includes MLB just bought Rawlings for 395 million...

Rawlings was founded in 1887 making gloves, balls, cleats and various sports equip. Of note is they are the manufacturers of the official Major League baseball.

With all the ball talk lately, including humidors, windings, off center corks, spin rate and funny feeling covers, maybe a new standard will emerge. Maybe they will control the size (which varies according to the allowable rules) and tightness of the wind and even the grip of the cover. Seems kinda interesting and I wonder just what they will have up their sleeves.

Ball production always will have variables although perhaps things can be tightened up. More of a factor is the style of baseball that is in vogue. Joe DiMaggio finished his career with more homers than strikeouts. Striking out was considered a weakness...not so today. If you strikeout more times then you get a base hit, all is forgiven if you have good home run production.

2018 will likely go down as the first time in MLB history the number of strikeouts exceeded the number of hits. This will likely continue as long as the long ball is rewarded more than other parts of the game.

More on changes to the baseball:

//We may have a reason for why home run rates have been up across Major League Baseball for over two years now — and an explanation for another recent phenomenon.

Writing for the Athletic, Dr. Meredith Wills dismantled 26 baseballs, 12 of which came from 2014 and the other 14 from 2016 and 2017. While she found that virtually everything about the baseballs was identical, there was one notable difference — the laces in the newer baseballs are nine percent thicker than those in the older ones.

Wills explains that this is a significant issue for two reasons.

While it is unclear how much spherical symmetry would be gained from a 9.0% increase in lace thickness, it is unreasonable to assume that it would not make some contribution to drag reduction, thereby allowing the ball to carry farther.

Another likely consequence of thicker laces is the “epidemic” of pitcher blisters that began in 2016. Increased lace thickness will produce slightly prouder stitches (not to be confused with seam height, which is related to lace tightness and cover fit), creating a “bumpier” seam. Since blisters are often associated with tightly gripping or rubbing the seams, the rougher texture could be a strong factor in higher rates of blistering. In fact, the possibility of thicker stitches was even postulated by pitcher Rich Hill last year, although the follow-up was minimal.

Wills notes that a larger sample size would be needed to make a firmer conclusion, and that there are many possible reasons for a change in the laces. That includes a supplier adjustment that even Rawlings may not have been aware of. That said, it’s clear there’s something in play here.

Some pitchers have long believed that the baseballs are juiced, but it may be simpler than that, based on this evidence.//
Reilly

Common sense would argue that ‘fatter’ laces would slow the ball down but utilizing my admittedly less than exhaustive aerodynamic background, but most assuredly far more than yer average crankloon, further thought (about 7 seconds’ worth) ruptured up the idea that the phat seams could easily create a better ‘boundary layer’ which is a key component of aerodynamic designs. It is a fertile subject which I invite all fellow wannabe aerodynamicists, and sundry crankloons, to read up on.

With Trout and Ohtani, it’s hard to understand the lack of support for the Angels on this forum.

I get to as many Angel games as I can. With a senior discount I can get a very good upper deck seat behind the plate for $12. A beer and hot dog for less than $10. Midweek you can move down to field level easily, they don't seem to mind.

With Pujols, Trout, Ohtani and Simmons it's a really great deal.

In 2018 for the first time in baseball history strikeouts will outnumber hits. Given this fact consider.that Joe DiMaggio had lifetime stats of 2,214 hits and only 369 strikeouts. His lifetime total of 361 home runs almost equaled his total strikeouts.
Aaron Judge, considered by many to be a superstar, so far in his short career has already amassed 338 strkeouts to go with 234 hits.
At that rate, if Judge were to match DiMaggio’s 2,214 hits they would come along with 3,198 strikeouts. That’s a rate that is 8.7 times higher than DiMaggio.

Yesterday saw Francisco Arcia make his big league* debut. After 12 years in the minors his first major league hit was a three run homer. Had an RBI single later in the game. Nice. The Angels will miss Maldonado, though, IMHO.

Nick Tropeano only gave up 5 hits. Of course, being 2018, they were 5 homeruns.

speaking of small ball, I just read Keith Hernandez's autobiography (checked out from public library)

my favorite part was when he was at some awards ceremony. The MC showed clips of Keith Hernandez going the other way for a single or something. George Brett is in the crowd and says (paraphrase) "what a sissy hitter".

I love the sissy hitting!

But I also love George Brett's approach. Both of those dudes raked (just one with a little more power)

My bet with Donini A's v. Angels, regular season record, is pretty much a sure thing at this point, but the Yankees and Astros should be feeling the heat, too.

Are they going to start putting dresses on the batters? They tossed Urena? Did they toss Drysdale when he broke Mike Shannon's arm? Not even Shannon got mad, he knew he was cheating.

Keith Hernandez has it right.

Commenting on the Acuna situation during the TV broadcast of the Mets’ game against the Baltimore Orioles, Hernandez said: “They’re killing you, they’ve lost three games, he’s hit three home runs — you gotta hit him. I’m sorry. People are not going to like that.

“You gotta hit him, knock him down — seriously knock him down if you don’t hit him. And you never throw at anybody’s head or neck. You hit him in the back, you hit him in the fanny."

“That’s just part of the baseball code,” Hernandez said. “If someone’s hitting home runs, they’re leaning all over that plate. I’m sorry, I’m not gonna let you do that. Here’s one in your ribs or on your back, and let’s see if you stay in there next time.”

Bob Gibson says he never hit a batter, batters hit themselves.

Hank Aaron, on Bob Gibson: “You don’t dig in against Bob Gibson, he’ll knock you down. He’d knock down his own grandmother if she dared to challenge him. Don’t stare at him, don’t smile at him, don’t talk to him. He doesn’t like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don’t run too slow, don’t run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don’t charge the mound, because he’s a Gold Glove boxer.”

The Puig episode reminds me of when A-Rod got in it with Varitek after getting plunked. It was just jawing until V said, "We don't throw at .230 batters", and then of course it was on.

Looking a lot more likely that the Mariners don't make the playoffs than the A's!

The Good Guys in green and gold are the best story in baseball this year. They've been playing out of their heads since mid-June. A long, grinding lineup with lots of power, excellent bullpen, and surprisingly consistent starting pitching. And let's not forget the absolutely startling third base defense provided by Matt Chapman that has to be seen to be believed. They've been a very exciting team to follow this season. (I listen to almost every game.)

The regular season bet I made with Donini before the season—A's record v. Angels record—is an absolute lock at this point.

And you should have heard the cocky hogwash Donini was spouting in March...

If the A's get into the postseason, which at this point is more likely than not, they will be the weakest by far of the 5 AL teams to make the playoffs -- at least as measured by run differential. As of this moment these are the top 5 teams in the AL (by winning percentage) and thus are in-line to make the playoffs. Run differential is displayed by team.

1. Boston +215
2. Houston +197
3. New York +148
4. Cleveland +139
5. Oakland +76

So that's a relatively wimpy team in the East Bay.

on the other hand

A's 2018 record wins
against Mariners: 5 of 12 (7 more to play)
against Red Sox: 4 of 6
against Astros: 6 of 15 (3 more to play)
against Yankees: 1 of 3 (3 more to play)
against Indians: 2 of 3

very respectable.

Long balls are dead balls in the Coliseum... heavy, cold marine layer, night games are horrific for home runs, not to mention the wacky pitching.

The A's have hit 170 home runs.

Only the Indians, Dodgers, and Yankees have hit more.

(Tied with the Angels, one ahead of the Red Sox.)

Two of the aforementioned teams play in absolute bandboxes.

But about that marine layer—the A's have hit 66 home dingers, 104 away.

Their 104 away home runs leads the majors.

As for run differential, what is it relative to the others since June 15, when the A's started their breakout? Because for the Good Guys, it has been a tale of two seasons—that which came before, and that which has happened since.

Since June 15:

The A's: 41-14 (.745, .653 pythag—so they are quote, "getting lucky" to a certain extent)
Red Sox: 40-15 (.727, .688 pythag)
Cleveland: 36-20 (.643, .689 pythag)
Yankees: 33-25 (.569, .590 pythag)

Then comes the rest of the league. Only Colorado has played better than .600 in the same stretch in the NL.

Also note, the Red Sox and Yankees have gotten fat playing TOR and BAL. Baltimore is truly horrible this year. And Cleveland gets fat playing in what is this year, a truly lousy division.

I get that the games played before June 15 also count, but I follow the A's pretty close, and they've been pretty fabulous since their starting pitching stabilized in mid-June. Calculating from their .653 pythag is a 105 win team over the course of a full season. That's a damn good team. Two months + through the height of the summer is not an insignificant part of a baseball season. Sleep on them at your peril. And that with the lowest payroll in the game.

Best of all, they've been exciting and athletic. They've been playing beautiful baseball.

Big Sexy has been dumped in the bullpen for the remainder of the season. The Rangers wanna "have a look at" some dude that was MIA for two years.

His second half numbers were a dropoff, but he gave them enough quality starts for a pitching depleted team. He says he'll decide over the winter if he wants one more season but it's highly doubtful anyone would sign him.

D’s down by 5, top of the 8th, two outs.

Make that 3 outs.

Once again, when they have to produce, they choke.

They now have to sweep the Giants to even have a shot. Like that will happen.

So how does the Rockies blow it after tying up the game in the 9th? Basic base running skills are lacking. I coached little league/SAS (baseball/softball) for 13 years across all my kids and playing into HS. I'm not sure I witnessed a worse display of base running in the past 20 years. A key game (away) if they actually want to advance out of the divisional series. Blackmon getting into a run down between 3rd and home with one out?! Worse than getting thrown out at 3rd. Too worried about being a hero...

Boston Dodgers WS...

Just got back from kalymnos then went to the Senior Softball Worlds (we lost) and now in Utah for a few days of limestone cragging. Been gone like a month and a half.

Trying to stream the games on the road is a tough one but saw the dodgers last night. Not that impressive but good enough to handle the Braves eventually in the series

Go Cubs!! (Next year)

Can't believe Roberts left Buehler in after he loads the bases on walks, walks in a run, then gives the guy a grand slam. He threw something like 7 straight balls, waaay outside of zone. It didn't look like a strategy, either...more like a loss of control.

free burgers for everyone if Brewers win this game.

Here's the history: Back in the 1940s, George Webb (the man) predicted the then American Association Brewers team would win 12 games straight and he would give away some free burgers.

But it wasn't until In 1987 that the Crew completed their first 12-game win streak and George Webb restaurants carried on the tradition, giving away more than 168,000 burgers.

In 2018, the Brewers are poised to score more free burgers for the fans.

There’s a buxom brunette behind home plat me that is veeeerrry distracting

That's front row Amy, she's been at every Brewers post-season game so far this year.

Another great game. In both last nights game and the one today you get ninth inning drama with the game on the line, tying run on base, each teams closer facing the other teams clutch player (Turner last night, Yelich today) for the last out. This is going to be one hell of a NLCS.

Yeah, well, it makes for exciting baseball to watch, but I’m not sure it’s the mark of the best way to be playing baseball, esp in the playoffs...the Dodgers need to have their sh#t together enough to get runs earlier in the game, and then protect them. They’re pretty evenly matched with the Brewers, but they’re gonna need to play a helluva lot more solidly to face the Sox or ‘stros.

Greenland! How apropos for this statistickle factoid:

Because the baseball regular season is in the spring and summer, the playoffs and World Series are forced to be held during the fall. Due to this, some World Series games can get very cold, but what is the coldest World Series game in history? The answer? Game Four of the 1997 World Series between the Marlins and the Indians at Cleveland’s Jacobs Field on October 22, 1997.

The 1997 World Series was a juxtaposition with respect to the weather. Four of the games were held in sunny, hot Miami, Florida, while the three others were held in freezing Cleveland, Ohio. Naturally, the games in Cleveland were going to be very cold, but no one expected a game where the official game time temperature was 38˚F (3.3˚C). Also, as the game progressed into the later innings, the media reported wind chill readings as low as 18°F! This game was recorded as the coldest game in Fall Classic history. However, Major League Baseball didn’t record the weather for games until the 1970s, so colder World Series games could have occurred before weather data was recorded.

The "W" went to Jaret Wright and the tribe, 10-3. This evened the series 2-2 but the Marlins won it in seven games.

Porcello gets the start in LA because he is the best batter among Red Sox pitchers... and he's not a bad pitcher either... though we'll see if the Dodgers will be better at home.

Not that happy with the idea of JD in right field and Mookie at 2nd, it makes sense...

but the fact that it's now a 5 game series where the Sox just need to win 2 takes some of the pressure off, more likely that the Sox win in LA then the Dodgers in Boston.

BOSTON — In the souvenir store across from Fenway Park, it will set you back $100 for a framed, autographed photo of "The Steal," Dave Roberts' stolen base in the 2004 AL Championship Series that kick-started the Red Sox comeback against the New York Yankees and ended Boston's 86-year title drought.
Now, as he returns to Boston as the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, he will be trying to prevent the city that celebrates him from claiming a fourth title this century. Even so, Roberts can expect a big cheer when he is introduced before Game 1 on Tuesday night.

Russ,
you must not watch pro football.

Never.... I'm a one sport guy. Luckily that season goes from Feb til Nov... Most of it without Joe Buck

I don't watch anything else but baseball except for maybe a couple times a year at best... maybe some superbowl if the hot dogs are free, a bit of world cup, and some midget wresting when it is MidgetMania™™™ and a belt is involved.

That's contemporary baseball for you. Can you imagine Red Schoendienst taking the ball away from Bob Gibson in the seventh inning of a World Series game when he had a one hit shutout going?

Who's going to be the series MVP?

my vote is for David Price.

although you could consider Dave Roberts, what with pulling Hill too soon, and staying with Kershaw too long, he did more to help the Sox than most of their own players.

RJ, it’s ‘uff da’, but yer right - it can mean ‘inane’, or stoopid. I think his best are he repeatedly says so and so had a good swing when he fouled off a pitch. If it was such a good swing how come the damn ball went backwards, huh?

BoSox wacking .364 with RISP!

Shouldn’t Price’s first name be Ezekiel or sumpin’?

Much as I’d like to pin this on Robert’s pitching decisions, fact is RS are just a goddam good team. Even if Hill had stayed in last night, the reality would be the same.

Worst sporting morning of the year—the morning after the last out of the World Series.

Congrats to the Red Sox.

They played excellent baseball through the whole postseason and were clearly the best team.

Nice to see that sparkling regular season record count for something, too.

Now we face the dull thuds of the football season.

How many days until pitchers and catchers report?

Machado is the best player on the Didgers.

Really? Why did he hit .182? And I’m not real fond of clowns who stand at the plate admiring their ‘homers’ only to wind up at first after they bounce off the wall.

He has Puig to keep him company there.

Drysdale, Jenkins, Marichal, Seaver, Gibson, they knew how to handle those guys.

Looks like a couple of teams will be looking for bullpen help next year

Sounds right, or at least one team in particular.

I happened to notice a record (actually a two for one) this morning that I wasn't previously aware of

Fernando Tatís became the only player to hit two grand slams in the same inning, when he attained the milestone, slugging two in the third inning for the St. Louis Cardinals on April 23, 1999. In achieving the feat, he also set a new major league record with eight runs batted in a single inning.

Ha, impressive. Good luck breaking the first part of that record. One would need to come up at least three times in the same inning with the bases loaded. Unlikely.

Oh wait, since you're a player Russ, you haven't topped that one yet have you?

With Cory Seager coming back, the Dodgers would be fools to sign Machado for what he'll get on the open market. I'd bet they will spend their money on pitching and a good defensive catcher who can hit. Bye bye, Yasmani, bye, bye, Machado, and if they could get anything for him (which they can't) it would also be bye, bye, Puig.

I’m not sure the reality check of the big money teams dissing him will do anything for his attitude or aversion to ‘hustle’. In too many ways, Machado is a representative of his generation: ‘I deserve everything’.

Correlations for weight, height and two measures of batting performance.

Hamburg L, Hines TM.

Abstract
The hypothesis that heavier baseball players are better batters was examined in two correlational studies of major league baseball players' performance. Neither height nor weight was significantly correlated with batting average. Both variables correlated significantly and positively with the number of home runs hit by American League players in the 1997 season. After partial correlations were computed, only the correlation between weight and number of home runs hit remained significant.

Ch-ch-ch-changes.....

Kemp was on the back end, anyway...Puig was good but not consistently so...

In any case, the lineup for the last two years has only got the Dodgers close and not across the finish line due more to luck than outright skill....

It's time to shake things up.
