It was a wonderful thing to see the leaders of the climbing community-- top pros like Peter Croft, Kai Lightner, Libby Sauter,Tommy Caldwell, and Alex Honnold, among others; and its two major organizations, the Access Fund and the American Alpine Club--coming together to speak out on these important issues.
Now, the rest of us should do our part. Here is a first step:
Write a letter to Interior Secretary Zinke about the importance of Bears Ears to the climbing community and urge him not to rescind or reduce the designation of it as a National Monument.
The Access Fund has a brilliant letter writing tool that makes it easy and takes about 5 minutes. These letters are vitally important as there is an official comment period about Bears Ears that will end May 26. So time is of the essence.

Thank you Rick and crew, between The Access Society, info posted by Base 104 and links provided by Ed Hartouni on the Dep. Of Interior-Natl. Monuments Review-Public comment thread I was able to put together a good and hopefully convincing response and sent it off.
If you do not want to use the Access Fund's letter writing tool you can comment directly to the DOI by going to http://www.regulations.gov and entering “DOI-2017-0002” in the search bar and clicking “Search”. If your comments go over 5000 characters (which mine did) you have to attach them as a file.
Rick what is your feeling about the meetings you have been attending, do you think you are changing any minds?

Only days left to get Bears Ears letters in due to an unusually short comment period, apparently designed to discourage comments from folks like climbers.
Take a few minutes to send a letter through the Access Fund portal up above.

Mr. Zinke, if you truly value and defend public lands as a vital public resource and national treasure as you have repeatedly stated since taking office then I sincerely urge you to walk the talk with respect to the Bears Ears. This area is enjoyed by a diverse group of American and international outdoors people and needs to be protected against destructive commercial development for short term gain. To willfully cause damage to such a beautiful and pristine area of the American West by undoing the protections already in place due to misguided political pressure would certainly be a very sad legacy to leave behind for you personally and a disservice to the position in which you have been placed. Please act with integrity and focus your valuable energy and attention elsewhere.
