I am flying to Washington DC tomorrow as part of an Access Fund group attending the joint Access Fund/AAC “Climb the Hill” event in support of public lands, including Bears Ears National Monument, which contains the spectacular crags of Indian Creek.
Some pretty good climbers you may have heard of are going to be there.

We will be visiting the offices of Senators and Representatives to:
• Oppose recent legislative efforts to privatize and sell off federal lands
• Oppose the administration’s plans to revoke or limit the protected status of the Bears Ears National Monument and others like it.
• Support adequate funding for maintenance and management of federal lands, including the National Park Service.
• Support climate federal change mitigation and research.

I got engaged in the (at that time) few days-old Bear Ears National Monument. Always nice to have an emotional connection to build a rapport with our lawmakers and statespeople.

Good to see climbers make the move to lobbying Congress. It is a great way to influence our representatives. Would be nice to have a pro lobbyist also, but that gets expensive real quick.
Since Trump is letting churches get political I presume that the AF can get political without risking the 501(c)(3) status.

I guess my position on all this is that if they were going to give the lands back to the states, I'd be concerned, but if its only about national monument status, and the BLM/NFS is going to manage them, I'm not that concerned. I like the way both of those agencies manage lands.
On the other hand, these roadside attractions are starting to give the Moab area a kind of trashy look.

A few pics from the event. The Access Fund and Alpine Club probably had 50-60 people on the Hill lobbying for the Antiquities Act and National Monument preservation this week. The group divided into eight smaller teams and made the rounds.

Somebody should have signed up Mark Udall if he wasn't part of the entourage. We lost a valuable voice when he left office.

Superb effort by the Access Fund, and hats off to all the amazing climbers representing.
Well done, making the voice of recreational user groups heard and reminding the Washington crowd that wilderness matters and in fact is one of USA's prime assets.
