Hey rj - My son rides for a trade team from Victoria, BC.
Remember when he would repeatedly climb up on the couch and then hurl himself off of it? I always figured he'd wind up as a high diver, not a cyclist.
And a question for all the TDF freaks -- is there someplace on the web to get a live commentary? You know, like the one Charles Pelkey used to do on velonews? It was just text, not voice and video, but it was great for following the race real time.

It's considered a win when the peloton arrives a few hundred meters from the finish and the sprinters, who are useless in the montains or time trials, have at it?
That's the equivalent of a 90 minute soccer match that ends up 0 to 0 and is decided by a shootout...boring!
The Green Jersey is ridiculous and the so called "King of the Mountains" is never the best rider in the mountains.

Jim's just sour about the not-so-generous bike lane on Red Mountain pass up in those picture perfect hills above him.......

Jody, do you make the same comments on the football thread or the baseball thread or the basketball thread or the track and field thread or the soccer thread or the whatever sport thread....?
I get sick of pseudo fans criticizing cycle racing because of it's unfortunate history of doping.
It is the only pro sport that is actively and publicly trying to clean up it's act.
Right now it is cleaner than it's ever been unlike all those other sports.
And hurrah for Greg Van Avermaet!

@donini, if you had any clue how difficult it is to keep yourself in position to gain sprint and mountain points, you might reconsider your statement. The sprinters have to survive the climbs just to compete for the sprints. The climbers have to survive the pace of the flats and still be able to ride OFF the front to get the mountain points. Where is Hildenbrand...he can actually ride...I'm like a 17 handicapper on a bike. Let him explain it to you.

Comments from the inexperienced are everywhere and the internet is fertile like that.
Just think of the average Joe/Jane and what they think about climbing and you have your answer. Like tough guy Stallone in Cliffhanger!
Man, it is looking to be a bitchin year, I hope it lasts! The post Armstrong years are looking to be as good as the 80's with a sprinkle coating of the early 90's.

People have absolutely no idea how difficult this sport is, and how difficult it is for the specialists. It's actually easier to be a GC rider, hence a lot of the sturm and drang over Sky/fROOMe (DICKEHEAD) pushing the pace towards the final sprint points.

Whoa...I'm not dissing the tour, it's one of the most difficult sporting events in the world. I just feel that the Green Jersey is around to make the flat stages somewhat palatable. Those stages are only for the most dedicated fans. The usual scenario is that there is a breakaway that is gradually eaten up by the peloton and a gizzilion guys are awarded the same time....including the guy who wins the sprint. Once in a coon's age the breakaway is successful and that can be interesting.
I really love the mountain stages where riders break down and the real men step up. The time trials are interesting in that they separate people out but the only drama is watching the clock. .

Bike racing is addicting and in some ways is similar to climbing...the better shape you are in , the more fun you are likely to have...If you have bike raced i think it makes it more interesting to watch the large field sprints that take place in the Tour's flat stages...
...Nothing more fun than cutting loose in a field sprint and giving it all you got....

Tami...The Tour teams prolly get more pampering ( team doctor , team chef , masseuse) than your son's team...The tour guys are prolly riding bigger miles and are better adapted to suffering thru a 21 day tour..If they are cheating ( doping ) the dope helps them recover faster...my two cents..
