Baraboo, Wisconsin. Great farming community. Close to Devils Lake . And has a large number of "real" bars.

I haven't been to Baraboo in 20 years... but it was a really neat little town back then.

Rapid City, SD and it's surrounding towns should be on the list. Close to or in the Black Hills..

This seemed pretty sleeper to me last summer, and great outdoor stuff off the radar of national park tourism:

I love Flagstaff, but it's gotten too big.

The great thing about Flag is that it's pretty big but it's also relatively dense. You have the advantages of a college town but you can be out away from everyone within minutes.

No love for Crawford and Hotchkiss Colorado? Decent home for @ $150,000, you can damned near piss off your back deck into the Black Canyon. Sleepy and cheap is nearby as well at Somerset. The Koch Brothers recently closed the Elk Creek coal mine there, the only employment, and it should be very cheap living I'd suspect.

The residents like to call their sleepy Nevada burg just plain "Mound."

BVB! My non-Mormon SLC friends have owned a house in Torrey for a couple years, & Heidi & I have spent some time with them enjoying the area.

Great place!

Perhaps the next Moab?

No jobs there, unless you are doing entry-level food service, are a Federal employee, or you are in the Mormon club.

Yeah, but the cost of living is extraordinarily low. Lots of under-the-radar dirtbags have been quietly hiding there for years, while enjoying some of the best and least-visited climbing areas in the US.

I should probably delete this, they're gonna kill me.

I suppose Prescott, Az is worth a mention. It's grown a ton but the cost of living is still pretty low compared to many places. There is outstanding single track, good access to year round rock and easy access to both the airport and the wilderness. 4ish hours from Josh, Red Rocks, 7 hours from Zion. It has far more to offer in the way of shopping/restaurants than most tiny desert towns and you can live right in town but get to excellent trails or rock with an easy 10 minute drive.
