ruppell - they forgot the next box - 2015 Apple introduces a large tablet with a stylus (I mean "pencil") that looks strangely like the Microsoft Surface
Like crankster said, this is well past end of life for that device. An upgrade to the latest iOS won't help. iOS 6 was the last version that supported the iPad 1 (current version is iOS 9.0.1). There is also a lot of iPad software that will no longer run on the iPad 1. Support for the non-retina iPad 2 has also ended.
Jim, The older iPad, plus a sketchy Internet connection will drive you nuts. I used mine to do email on the road in Italy 4 years ago but it was not fun.
Some of the suggestions here for newer equipment are a good idea. A tablet can have bluetooth keyboard if you really need to do word volume.

The last version that works on the original iPad is 5.1.1(8B206 build) don't waste your time trying to put 6 on it. You can't.
The current version as I write for the Air is 9.0.2 (13A542 build) check daily. There are usually bug fixes every few days a new version comes out. We are the beta testers.
All of the original APPs you got for your original iPad still run. If you try to get the latest version of APPs, including browsers, you will usually be given the option to download an older version. But lots of newer APPs aren't designed for the old iPad at all.
