If I try to go to the news or anything that requires a little effort my iPad churns and things start to load and then the damn thing defaults back to Safari and the problem is getting worse.
Okay, I'm a Luddite....anyone here with an answer?

If it is an old one, like mine (same probs), I suspect we need to 'upgrade'
the OS. I have avoided that like the plague given my last Apple OS 'upgrade'.
Why don't you be a good lad and do it while we watch?
ps
yeah, I'm up a Oh Dark Thirty to catch a flight.

Yup,the 'new' operating up grade will show it self as a unwanted pop-up every now and again.
I was not going to pull the trigger on that either. I use the thing, and can have the need to pull things up on the 'history' ??menu, if that's what you call it.
My kids use it for hours at a time to play games. They might check out what Dady -O has Been doing, so this rig is usually a 'safe for work'(sfw? Oh that's what that means )one.
One or two Verboten visits and they wipe the thing clear.
They say that on one of those, missions the thing would not play nice so they pulled the trigger
The up load took a bit but it did smooth things out and stopped, for the most part, that default bug. The upgrade has not been as bad as I remember the last one was,

What are yous guys doing up at Oh Dark Thirty on a Sunday?
It better be good, mind you. Maybe even as good as experiencing LA morons driving in
The rain. Holy Jeebus those people are stoopid! Almost got taken out twice in 10 miles!
I think they need a brain upgrade - how do you spin out on a completely straight stretch of
Freeway devoid of traffic? Oh, yeah, by driving yer POS minivan at 80 and hitting standing
water.

Hmmm...could be running the new operating system on an older iPad, or poor wifi in that beautiful box canyon of Ouray.

Reilly....I'll fess up. Angela and I are on the Aegean Coast of Turkey....it's around 5:30 pm here. Just got back from clipping bolts on lovely limestone a stones throw from the stnningly clear turquoise sea. Yes we went for a swim too.
Time to think about seafood and chilled white wine but I think I'll take a dip in the pool to get the salt off first.
You didn't answer the call for volunteers? I thought for sure I e-mailed you about it.
Crankster, the problem is not limited to Ouray. It's an iPad 1 about five years old.

Maybe get an adblock plugin? I can actually READ the news on Google now with one of those deals; however, I don't use it on the Taco. The ads here are not browser hogs.

I'm liking having the phone/tablet combination. But Linux. One of them, is bound to work. The phone sucks power like cray. The tablet, takes forever to charge.

Jim how much of your memory is tied up with photos?
That will bog an iPad down fast.

Jim, sadly that's about the lifespan of an iPad. Probably time to upgrade. Sell the old one down at the Outlaw.

Ipad1's are pretty slow compared to newer models, especially when they are loaded with five years of crap.
I found that if half of memory is tied up on my old 32 gig unit the thing bogs down, so clear out the APPs you don't use, put your old photos and movies somewhere else, decide which music you actually listen to, clear your cookies, and don't try using wifi and Phone network at the same time. Older machines aren't good at picking which to use.
Go to
settings:General:about
to find out how much memory is tied up.
Oh yeah. Close open APPs you aren't using. They do rob memory.
If you don't care what is on your machine do a full reset and start over.
Upgrades aren't an issue, really. If you did all the upgrades, you are frozen a iOS 5.1.1 or so. The machine won't support anything higher, and the last couple upgrades actually slowed the machine down a little. ( current iOS is 9. Something)
My newer iPad Air is 128 gig unit. Two years old. It's about half full of junk now and a spring cleaning is in order, though it hasn't slowed yet.

I just helped an old luddite last night by installing Adblock and Ghostery as plugins for their Chrome web browser. Adblock is pretty easy, nothing to configure. Ghostery, after installing you have to check which boxes of things you want it to block. Just check them all.
May the force be with you.

I've noticed that you have a good sense of humor as regards your age, so the above was just meant as a joke.😊

It's an iPad 1 about five years old. Like crankster said, this is well past end of life for that device. An upgrade to the latest iOS won't help. iOS 6 was the last version that supported the iPad 1 (current version is iOS 9.0.1). There is also a lot of iPad software that will no longer run on the iPad 1. Support for the non-retina iPad 2 has also ended.

Jim, The older iPad, plus a sketchy Internet connection will drive you nuts. I used mine to do email on the road in Italy 4 years ago but it was not fun.
Some of the suggestions here for newer equipment are a good idea. A tablet can have bluetooth keyboard if you really need to do word volume.
Supertopo sorely needs your content so perhaps you can get a "grant" allowance. ;-)

The iPad remembers
1) Might be the forum checking the IP.
Try logging off the iPad, then logging on with the phone and see if it will then remember.
( you are checking the "remember me" box, right?)
2) Are both machines on the cloud, and did you choose for the password to be stored there when you log in?

Generally correct, but wrong on the details.
The last version that works on the original iPad is 5.1.1(8B206 build) don't waste your time trying to put 6 on it. You can't.
The current version as I write for the Air is 9.0.2 (13A542 build) check daily. There are usually bug fixes every few days a new version comes out. We are the beta testers.
All of the original APPs you got for your original iPad still run. If you try to get the latest version of APPs, including browsers, you will usually be given the option to download an older version. But lots of newer APPs aren't designed for the old iPad at all.

Nobody wants to use their old printers, and generally, they have shorter lifespans than the computers.
Do you take your printers on trips?
And the Surface has five unrelated operating systems to it. Good luck with support.
