Yeah, I don't know why they would buy it otherwise. If they do I would use it even less than I do now, which isn't very much. So, see ya, mp!

Who cares if they advertise? That is the price of free websites. REI bought MP for the traffic, lots of traffic of REI's demographic. A pay wall would just encourage a competing site to pop up overnight. As guidebook authors know, the actual route info can not be copyrighted.

I have found the mountain bike side of it to be decent.

MP= bottom feeder.

Curious why you say that, Bob.

I find the site a decent resource especially for travel outside my local crags. And, even local crags.

Mountain Project has a treasure trove of info that we've all given quite freeily and readily. It could be made into guides and sold pretty easily. We've done all the work, all you need is someone to get it together. So, I hope that we all don't let that kind of thing happen to sites that have all this stuff!! Hell, I have my own site that makes me no mulla but I'm hoping for tips....http://southernsierraclimber.blogspot.com/

I much rather see the public support guidebooks.

They take information from users and profit from it with little to no return for the providers.

Just my opinion.

I thought that's where Stewart Green does all his "research" for his guide books. He knows what's up.

Moose...1800 plus FA and still counting...all out of my pocket and many hours doing trail and route repair but good try.

And most of the millions I make on books go back into buying gear/bolts/hangers/anchors. :-)

Bob,

I think Moose was joking, it just didn't come through in the post. No intelligent person actually believes that guidebook authors make any significant "profit" at all. And Moose has always seemed intelligent enough to know that.

This is kind of surprising. REI tried to have a forum back in the late 90's and it didn't work well for them so they bailed.

With all the work the community did to build that route database, it makes me wonder how it can be sold (ethically). If REI takes it and builds more into it then we all benefit from this deal, so I'll remain positive for now.

That is the sh#t the owners laid on me when I asked that my photos and routes (just my FA's) be removed. They said I wasn't being part of the community.

What would Mike Morley say?

Edit: Mike actually created the predecessor to Mtn.Project.

Does this make Blitzo the most prolific photographer in the REI pantheon?
