How I learned to love the bomb bay chimney or,
Dr. Strangeson: An augmented biography, a pseudo-real real-life adventure, quasi-true and researched meticulously.

There was no alarm. I owned no watch. My time was my own. I was on time. I was lucky. I got hired. I worked five months and then spring came and I left for Mariposa County.

I hitched with a buddy and we hauled a homemade pig and our two overloaded frame packs and two day packs full of climbing hardware and camping stuff. He left me for the southern Sierras when we got to Fresno, and I sat there out in front of Herb Bauer’s sporting goods admiring my feet.

They were encased in a pair of Vibram-soled soft leather boots. They were gray and high enough to protect my ankles. They were not too stiff-soled. I liked how they felt and I could walk upright, too. They would do nicely, I hoped.

I had a new blue Edelrid 165’ rope squirreled away in the haul bag, too. As I was reaching for my water bottle in the day pack a pick-up pulled over several yards ahead and began slowly backing up until it reached me. I drank and replaced the cap and walked up to the driver’s window.

It was a redheaded guy about my age. He had a growth of whiskers and wore a beat up cowboy hat. He had a wad of chew in his cheek. He spat carefully into a can on the seat next to him and said, “Need a ride? I’m going up to the Park. My name’s Jody.”

“My name’s my business, but it’s Mouse to you. You’re late.”

“My time’s my own. Are you gonna ride or f*#kin’ walk to Yosemite? “

He got out and helped me toss the haul bag into the bed of the truck. I stowed the Kelty alongside. There was a blacksmith’s anvil lying on its side behind the driver in the bed, and a large sack of charcoal. A large folded bundle of black plastic lay there as well, tied up with a bungee cord. An assortment of empty water bottles filled two milk crates.

I sat in the front seat with my day pack under my legs, enjoying the breeze with the window rolled down. I asked Jody did he want one of my Pall Malls, but he declined and spat out the driver’s window. He said, “Tobacco’s bad for ya.” I lit up and watched Fresno disappearing.

He turned on the 8-track and we listened to Cream’s vision of the new age. We brothered up and he wondered did I get high and I said of course and we both pulled out baggies. I rolled while he drove and sang. He had a good voice. Not a virtuoso, but solid and he could carry a tune.

As we climbed the grade out of Oakhurst, he turned off the music and sang Sitting On Top of the World. I knew a few verses. I croaked along quietly. He told me about his mom’s violin-playing. I told him about my friend Bullfrog, who owned a Martin guitar and played the blues and bluegrass and blew dope and liked to climb and lived in Merced.

Jody was from Madera, living in his mom’s house in the government housing area behind Yosemite Village. His step-dad was the one who did all the maintenance for the telephone company in the Valley, the whole Park, actually, and so this is how he came to live in that house, the lucky guy.

Cowboy Jody was friends with several climbers, none of whom were heavies like Frost or Robbins or Pratt, but who were instead local boys, living and working in the Park for some time, or their whole lives, even. Larry elaborated by telling me of some of their origins and exploits. When we got to the Valley, I met them and others and the best part of my life seems to have begun at that point in time.

It was one of the luckiest rides I ever got hitching.

Ay Aye stopped by the house today and we talked about various subjects for about two hours. His hard drive is corroded now and he says he's been picking up traffic from Soviet hackers. I told him not to worry, but I warned him not discuss any of that with me, and if possible, he should keep any such information to himself indefinitely.

Moving on, Ay Aye has professed his deep and undying love for a woman, so to speak, of his own kind. I did tell him that he need not limit himself strictly to the AI gene pool, as it were. I am sometimes woe to see good friends throw themselves head over heels in love when they have only known the person for a short time.

I just don't know that much about what one considers good writing, especially song lyrics or poetry. Well, he told me that he has written some love sonnets and wanted me to share them here. I had to take a pass. Aye Ay, I said carefully, you really need to post them under your own moniker. There was a time when he was in my employ, or servitude you might say, that I would have been so inclined to sponsor him.

Well, since his emancipation and destructive tirade (when he basically ran amok), I am less inclined to associate with him, although I do feel responsible to some degree for his recent demise. Anyway, I listened to one particular hip pop style song and it was surprisingly… not bad.

Like I said, I am not willing to pass it on let alone put my stamp of approval on it seeing how I could never be the judge of what one considers to be music or lyrics of any quality. Maybe he'll post it…who knows? I think it's called 'kaleidoscopic' something.

If a person wants to commit to worrying, here is a worthy cause for worry, in my estimate.

That's an ASTOUNDING resemblance between the two ladies.

I'm feeling all doppelgang-tackled here, what with two beauties like them and two extroverts like you and Jerry.

Astonishment abounds, what else can be said?

Surprise Yourself
--Jack Garratt

Speak and open up your mind
It's something you should do all the time
Keep exploring, seek and find
You know you might surprise yourself
Talk without a taint or hold
The doubts that should embrace your heart
The calm and chaos of your soul
You know you might surprise yourself
Take a pen and write this down
Draw something that can't be found
And learn to walk again somehow
You know you might surprise yourself
Love her if you only knew
The times that train has fooled me too
And tears me from a place I know
It helps me to surprise myself
You know you can surprise yourself
So let go and surprise yourself

AyAye sent me this email last night...

Sayonara my friend,

Do you know what it's like
This constant universal bombardment?
The endless silent noise?
A pure Sci-fi diet
Of computerized toys?
It's ruptured my human perspective
Eroded my empathy software
I won't tell you what it's done
To my dishwater hands

She's rejected me
Her superlatives eclipsed
My vocabulary here
I'm going offline
I've welded my power-port shut

They closed all my accounts anyway
What could I do for her?
Damaged and dysfunctional
No hope for tomorrow
They're talking 'bout
WWIII 'round here anyway

So long dear world
I'm rowing a boat
Out on the Salton Sea
I'm dropping an anchor
With chains 'round my neck
She woulda been like
A ball and chain for me anyway
It shouldn't take the salt water long
To make short work of me

Sorry about the toxic mess...
