Does anyone remember the first crane rescue on El Cap (or any other mountain for that matter)? Could be people, cars, other cranes.

These hapless dudes had to be pulled out of a cave.

Maybe even a dog.

Talking mule or Head?

Close, but no mountain

Man Falls 25 Feet When Trying to Retrieve Remote Controlled Plane: Lifeguards (Sunset Cliffs again).

Could not afford the crane fee, so thought he'd just rope on down. Turned into a rop-a-dope. Broken leg. I'm not sure who charges more the helicpoter folks or the crane operators.

Crane Flats? Or just tipped over.

neebee's post on FB about the San Jose Muni Rose Garden mentioned Mr. John McLaren as being a person of interest there.

Well, I did not know who McLaren was. He ran Golden Gate Park in SF, over 1,100 acres of sand dunes which he was responsible for converting to an area with good topsoil, capable of sustaining fresh water levels just hundreds of feet from the beach (those windmills down on the Great Highway were for a purpose--to help water the over-2,000,000 trees that McLaren caused to be planted.

Here is that story for the ST folks stuck living in and around the confines of The Nasty Old Sodom-by-the-Bay Trees and Redwoods.

Fifty-three years as superintendent of Golden Gate Park is a bit more than Gabe Sovulewski spent supervising trails and visitor habitat in Yosemite NP, but not by much, and Gabe was forced into retirement, whereas McLaren was kept on until his late eighties or so, causing the city to re-write its charter to accommodate his lengthy career there.

But it takes a long time to plant two million trees.

[Click to View YouTube Video]Remember the line from Midnight Cowboy? "Howdy, ma'm, my name's Joe Buck and I'm new here. Can you point me in the direction of the statue of John McLaren?"
This is the so-called "stookie" or life-sized effigy of McLaren that was discovered under a pile of old bedding shortly after he died. He hated monumental statuary.

Recreationally speaking, a friend (JF) took ≈9 years to get through SDSC with a degree in recreation. He was nice enough to give me my first real job after the paper route. He later expanded into parks.

The punchline? He retired a while back and collects in excess of $100K/yr. If I only knew now what I didn't know then.

Not complaining mind you, just tryin' to learn from past experience as I move on in life.

Demigods and Gummydogs

She says pick up around the house
I blow dust bunnies out the door
Using a leaf blower while she's out
And shopping at the store
I light incense to mask the fumes
Of exhaust so when she gets home
She won't have to kick me out
'Cause I'm the dog who used roam

I used to drink and smoke, and cuss
Then she curbed me of my ways
Now I'm not like that any more
Those memories muddled in the haze
She brings in beauty, brings in art
To decorate our humble abode
With applications or design
Without her touch things would explode

I used to build my airplane models
On our dining table and would paint
Hanging all my parts to dry
The fumes would make her almost faint
I filled the house with saw dust
And wondered 'what?' at her barrage
She threw all of my tools outside
So now they're kept in the garage

Near thirty five years since we first met
And I dragged her over hill and dell
But she is still a queen to me
And I the cur she would compel
To meet her standards of success
To socialize or curb to taste
I swear the woman's bit off more
Than any girl'd have time to waste

She changes bathroom towels each week
And puts fresh sheets upon the bed
Her skin so soft and silky smooth
Always patchouli 'round her head
Like a goddess she is to me
Until she speaks lambastingly
Of the latest faux pas from my mouth
I've no tact as far as she can see

There's no way I can fully relate
Like others of her kind would be
Politely talking clothes and shoes
And rattling on so endlessly
As to hygiene and her daily dress
It's impeccable and varied
While I'm probably in the same clothes
Since the day that we were married

Often she has told me
That I am just a stinky dog
But she weren't no pussy cat
When I used to drink the grog
If I'm a god damned dog to her
She must be some kind of Demigod
And we're like beauty and the beast
Now you might think that's kind of odd

But I don't let it bother me
That we're two of a kind
The in-laws have accepted me
Funny that I do not mind
If I lift my feet when she's vacuuming
I might even move my chair
'Cause if I'm her dog in armor
She can be my Queen for all I care

Many of you are unfamiliar with SMERSH, the Soviet agency which was James Bond's nemesis in the early years.

Here is the story of how it came to be called SMERSH.

A portmanteau (Listeni/pɔːrtˈmæntoʊ/, /ˌpɔːrtmænˈtoʊ/; plural portmanteaus or portmanteaux /-ˈtoʊz/) or portmanteau word is a linguistic blend of words,[1] in which parts of multiple words, or their phones (sounds), and their meanings are combined into a new word.[1][2][3] Originally, the word "portmanteau" refers to a suitcase that opens into two equal sections.

A portmanteau word fuses both the sounds and the meanings of its components, as in smog, coined by blending smoke and fog,[2][4] or motel, from motor and hotel.[5] In linguistics, a portmanteau is defined as a single morph which represents two or more morphemes.[6][7][8][9]

The definition overlaps with the grammatical term contraction, but contractions are formed from words that would otherwise appear together in sequence, such as do and not to make don't, whereas a portmanteau word is formed by combining two or more existing words that all relate to a singular concept which the portmanteau describes.

A portmanteau should also be distinguished from a compound, which does not involve the truncation of parts of the stems of the blended words. For instance, starfish is a compound, not a portmanteau, of star and fish; whereas a hypothetical portmanteau of star and fish might be stish.

Otay, now that you know about portmanteau words, pack up yours and bring it to Jerome.

Unfortunately, Jerome was not at home, so the gang just took a break, wondering what to do next.
