Well, looks like I'm not going to the VA. I've overstayed my visit here.

What a shame. The blood draw will have to wait. I'm a big boy and take responsibility for myself. I know I'm not pushing things. Not like the two times when I quit using the blood anti-coagulant Warfarin and found I had a clot in my heart once and a clot in my lung the next.

Risky business? Who can tell? My legs aren't swollen, I'm not terribly short of breath, and I am sleeping better, so the CHF danger signs are not present as they were those times I quit the Rx. I was still drinking when those episodes took place and I was hospitalized as a result.

I know that I need to call the VA in Fresno and let the caregivers know I'm going in NEXT WEEK, first thing. I should also get the ball rolling with this hernia operation again. So I will call the VA Clinic, speak with the nurse in charge, and get her to tell Doc Love to please send a referral to the VA in Fresno for pre-surgical exams by their team.

"Sounds like a plan, Stan."

Yes, zBrown, I get 'em when they tell me I need one.

I spoke with Will, my contact in the VA blood thinner office, a couple hours ago and told him not to waste his time trying to contact me this week, that I'd have it done on Monday next (following the Broncos' victory in Super Bowl 50) and he noted it on his computer, etc.

And Gnome, all you need to do is look at that rower's guns and you know it's Bullwinkle. Boy, that dude's got the arms of a gorilla in comparison to me!

Here's a BIRTHDAY GREETING for Gypsy.

Very happy birthday, girl!

Got all that "stuff" done. Now I'm waiting on a return call from Bullwinkle to confirm the visit and a connection in El Portal or Yosemite Village, one.

I called my sister, lennypenny, just a bit ago. She tells me that Bevin has a new address and phone, so it looks like she's in LA, not Henderson, NV, anymore. She also told me that my ex, Dolores, has purchased a "tiny house" in a "tiny home community" in Washington state and will be living there with her partner, Pat. She'll be retiring from her teaching job in San Leandro and I guess she's selling the house in Castro Valley where Bevin grew up. She got that off FaceBook.

I'm gonna go get quarters to do the washing. In typical bachelor style, it's done as rarely, as you can imagine, for who is there to impress, anyhow?

Peace. Over.

Job one, buying the dip sh_tuff. Ornanges, 'toes, 'does, black olives, and red onion.

The colors of the seventies were pretty drab in comparison to those of the psychedelic sixties. The country was recovering from the turmoil of the Vietnam War, and the desire for peace and calm was reflected in the dark wood and warm earth tones of the period.

Avocado Green and Harvest Gold were important colors (especially in appliances), and were frequently mixed with toned-down versions of sixties orange. Primary colors, often seen in the more futuristic pieces of the period (such as molded plastic furniture), added a playful element to the overall palette of the decade.

VADE BRONCOS

Es optimus.
Ad infernum c#m ceteris.
Utinam valeatis victoriam contra omnes.

--Mus de Merced, MMXVI

I took part of the afternoon to visit and meet old friends downtown.

First, the bookstore, where I found gentle Alyssa with a new, very short hairstyle. It shows off her earrings, which is what my Mom told me when I first saw her with a short do.

She was negotiating the purchase of ten copies of a new book on Merced, Tio Boogie, having to do with the old music scene, partially, and the boxing scene here, which was quite active, particularly among the Latinos.

The author of the book, Charlie Mariano, now from Fresno, has two others which he has written, one being The Whole Enchilada; and the second book, called Piece Work. He was there in the store delivering his new one. He graciously signed the copy of Piece Work, which I bought (I have the first somewhere, still, I think) because it was five bucks cheaper than the new one, which will be a future purchase, I'm sure.

When I left the store, I immediately ran into a guy who my father-in-law taught in HS. He is Steve Loefers. He used to hang around the skate shop my boy Scottie ran. He is an aging hipster, married and with a boy who is autistic.

Steve told me he hasn't been in town for about three years because he moved his family to Tracy, where there is a school for non-verbal autistic children. His son is speaking now, so there was no need to continue living up north, so he's back in town and has a job at a brand new downtown shop dealing in auxiliary products for smokers of medical Mary Jane. This dude has gotten so much more mature that it is uncanny.

I fell by the 510 Bistro (just a few doors away on Main) for some yummy grilled tuna salad and a glass of Sandude Brown Ale by a new craft brewery in Turlock. Deee-lish lunch, in my humble opinion. More on the ale in the Central Valley photos thread sponsored by DMT Travel.

And then in comes my old paisano, Robert Thomasetti. He had his brother Pete in tow and their faces were set for a bowl of 510's penne (good and filling for a chilly day like today for sure). Well, he introduced Pete to me and when I mentioned Alyssa's new do, he took off like a shot to go say "HI!" He has a thing for her, see, and I can't blame him.

So this was a good, good day, running into folks and getting in some bicycling, too, but not too much. I'm still herniated, and riding causes some distinct twinges of pain, so I'm not pushing the exercising too much until that's been fixed.

There are some very good stories in Piece Work. I'll post some on the Central Valley thread later.

What to my surprise, though, in checking out the book during lunch, there appeared a photograph by ST's own Paul Martzen from Fresno. I'm wonderin' how Charlie knows Paul. Like I told Charlie, Merced is still a small town to those who've lived here long enough.

Yikes!!!!

Very crafty, Dwain!

Or as Tami might say, "Coolio!"

Mouse’s Super Super Bowl 50 Guacamole

What you see in the fruit bowl—2 large Hass avocadoes, 3 medium Roma tomatoes, (minus the seeds), 3 medium navel oranges cut into sizable chunks, half a sweet red onion diced fine. About as much prepared chile as you are capable of handling—I used four tablespoons of Chiloe’s Chile.

You also need at least 2 cups of small curd cottage cheese (I prefer large curds if you can find it) but more of it will make this stretch to feed more people. Salt is optional (sea salt is good).

For dipping, I found an inexpensive bag of salt-free organic corn chips at Grocery Outlet. (Wonders never cease—SALT-FREE CHIPS!)

Mash in a large mixing bowl one of the avocadoes.
Add the diced onion, the ornanges, the tomatoes and salt (optional, of course).
Add cottage cheese and chile.
Blend to your satisfaction.
Put the bowl in the reefer.
Smoke a reefer.
Chill until the munchies set in or your guests arrive.

Then watch the game.
Cheer for whoever you wish, but the Broncos are gonna win, in spite of Madden Football’s prediction.

Hope you'll try the dip. This is a recipe I've made my own since Super Bowl XVI, but the first time I've used ornanges.

Minus the ornanges, this is great spread on a chunk of bread or English muffing.

Go Broncos!!!!

Hey Mouse,
You sound like me with way too many things to do in every day and too little time to do them all. Say hi to Dean for me if you can remember.

The Time Expandomatic Machine

Woke up and out the door
Never was that rushed before
My schedule frantic to arrange
No time for cover
So strange
I walked
Showering in the rain
And no reflection would remain
To try and stop
To find a way
To slow the passing time of day

With winter solstice now complete
My ledger filled
The day replete
Stretched and stressed
With unfinished business
And wondered where
The time has gone
And all this time
I have to say
So quickly how it slips away

No rabbit has me on the run
More of a tiger
No time for work
No time for fun
No time for funk
The Funk Queen brings me in my dreams
I wake and see futility
This race near run
With never 'nough time each day
While time washes my dreams away

I live and tick the time away
No time to waste
But sometimes do
Like there's all the time in the world
Taking time to play
And then I say
Where did it go?
As if I didn't know
I've stopped caring
I can't stop time
But I'll make the time to say
I'll light up all the candles
When my lovers love is on display

So I'm building a machine
From ropes and gears
And other things
With patent pending
The just a possibility
Of results upending
And just a smattering
Of things earth shattering
I'm taking my time
To savor and attach
All the chips and servos
A contraption's less aesthetic
Than hopes prophetic

As time goes by
Passing milestones
Adding the wrinkles
Children are born
We live and die
The sun comes up
The sun goes down
The little hand goes round and round
And time goes on
Ticking away
And continues on its way

Nice take on time, Bushman.

Call me Salman Rush-to-die if it's not pretty close to truth that time waits for Gnome-Man, you-man, and Everyman.

I expended energy yesterdie in a failed cause BEcause I'm still here in Middle Mirth laughing at fate, the fickle biche, pointing her finger at me.

Turns out that the phone # I got from Bullwinkle was bogus. I've left a message with the Yosemite Research Librarian for him to call me--he's a volunteer there.

I could have "told myself so" that things would not go as this Mouse planned.
Anything can happen, usually does, too, when I go "planning mode." I long for the days when, carefree, I'd jump in a car on an on-ramp, having thumbed my nose at the pass-me-by creeps after thumbing for however long.

It's the spur-of-the-moment instances that produced the best memories for me; and it's because the folks who received my impromptu visits were not too busy not to jam with me when I showed up.

Now these folks might take umbrage and fail to embrace the moment. We "mature" into adulthood, not knowing how we'll be later on in life when the vicissitudes of being demand our mostly full attention. Kids, responsibilities to others like employers, mistresses, and tax men, they make a man or woman of us, and the child's carapace falls by the way.

And then we die.

And planning for death does not mean we plan on dying anytime soon. Until we do buy our farm, usually a smallish holding of two feet by eight feet next to a relative, maybe, if we plan well enough, it's all systems go to meet these responsibilities and deadlines (pun intended).

"Excuse me, Mr. Death, but where did you come from? If i'd known you were coming, I'd have baked a death-day cake."

One lone candle on it to celebrate our passing into the light.

Snuff for now, cuz I got pics, lots of them, to share and I need a fresh page-top.

Now it's time for me to go.

Presented in alphabetical order of their locations, some images from the book by Evelyn Stoddard "Otheto" Weston of Columbia and other parts of California, but mostly Columbia, taken for her publication Mother Lode Album, STanford Press, 1948, over a period of fifteen years.
I wish that she'd included the dates the images were taken. Alas, she did not.

I fibbed about being the old-timer in the photos in the previous post.
His name is Hubert Brady.
Mr. Brady was a unique town character. The son of a gold rush pioneer, he embodied the California gold rush ethic. He taught many of the Columbia townspeople much about the gold era, and they remember him with fondness. He represents the times when Columbia was a living town, and not a state-park-made trashy tourist trap. These songs were recorded in 1936, and are enshrined at the Library of Congress. [Click to View YouTube Video]

This here's for my friend and your friend and Lisa's friend, BooDawg, who sings it a capella so wella.[Click to View YouTube Video]

And that's it for today.

Hope you've enjoyed seeing the buildings that many of you will recognize, having driven by them in their modern forms.

Some, like the O'Byrne's Ferry and Melones structures are drowned due to the irrigation and electrification needs of the state. Some may be visible now because of the drought. (What drought?)

Others, like the Garrotte structures, are simply bypassed by re-routing of highways.

Time marches on and on and on but seems to never arrive at a destination.

Just ask Bushman.

Special thanks to my faithful scanner, Old Faithful!
