Explain The Flames Please--Reilly

Not gonna happen in my lifetime, sir.

Best just to go with the flow.

And soda bread...sweet dreams, everyone.

I gave it an honest hour and still lay awake, so I have tried warm milk, but it is not working. Tough beans. I am used to it.

NO POEMS HAVE COME TO ME. More tough beans.

I did manage a brief essay, however. I'm blaming it on Woody Allen's movie Midnight In Paris. (4 stars in the Duncan Hines rating system which I have long preferred over the system of 1 to 10, which is unneccesarily complicated.)

Midnight Expression

Nostalgia: noun; a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.

From nostos (Greek) "return home" + algos (Greek) "pain"

"People always go back to those old places where they loved life
Then they see how those old things they loved have gone away"
--Cancion de las Simples Cosas

It is not really a sickness, thinking of the past as much as I seem to do. Rather, it is a learning experience.

All learning stems from our past one could say. Plato did say this, in fact, in the Phaedo.

I learned this from working in a used book store, but only in a subliminal way...I never thought about it until tonight, really.

The book store work experience was, as the employee indoctrination brochure at B Dalton Bookseller told neophytes there, "an education in itself." I tend to go along with this statement.

The biggest learning experience I had there was to listen to the customers: You cannot sell them what they want if you don’t let them tell you what that is. I did not make much money at that job, but I derived an enormous amount of satisfaction in that I was making folks happy by satisfying their needs.

I have come to find this is a basic tenet of Epicurianism, which came to me from reading a book, The Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt, recently.

A used book store is a nostalgia shop in a way. It is a repository of ideas, stories, recipes, and instructions on life, ways of doing things, places to visit, personalities, history, and speculation on the future.

Libraries are the same sort of place. I used to hang out at the local libraries in Camarillo and here in Merced quite a bit. I had time to kill and a curiosity that drove me, as well as a need to be entertained cheaply.

Tonight I thought that I might sleep but it is eluding me. There is always time to sleep and dream, but there is only so much left to me to express myself.

It is not healthy to deprive oneself of sleep, you might tell me, but I am more concerned with my mental health. I feel driven to write and write I shall, if it takes all night.

But it won’t. I have pretty much said what I wanted. In Hamlet, Polonius says,
"Since brevity is the soul of wit
And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
I will be brief..."

It has been raining tonight and one of the muses has been abroad, demanding my attention. I think her name is Clio.

Clio, baby, you wanna dance with me? No, wait, that’s your sister Terpsichore. Let’s just talk, if that’s all right with you, okay?

And wouldn't you know, she answers thus:
"Good night, sweet prince. Parting is such sweet sorrow."

Bitch!

making art,
not with paint or clay,

but with life itself as your medium.

A life-artist,
"Lebenskuenstler"

as the Germans would say,

We find beauty in the colors of existence,
The palette we use, made from whole cloth,
Colors; prose and song, the saturation of hues life randomly puts at our disposal,

some in search of secure, sustained flight

perfect as the letter 'Z', but full flurisch like a Tree,Mhan,Flourish" it is a wild bit of anarchy,
that reminds some why we climbed - that we climbed - that a ditch is very close to where paradise lay-
for us to lay with her - for a moment and as long as we could

and still wish we did, did more will do again. . .
persist, at being , innate in the way ,
like for one who makes do with the brushes they've got,
and doesn't pout over a few mistaken strokes.

The story I'm told is that Joe Cocker created this business in order that all Crawford (population roughly 400)residents could have gainful employment if they so desired.

The Rhinoceros Poem

The rhino is a homely beast,
For human eyes he's not a feast.
Farwell, farewell, you old rhinoceros,
I'll stare at something less prepoceros.

Punctuality

Six pills every morning and three more later on;
I waken and I take ‘em, I’m glad to greet the dawn.

I could be dead without ‘em, according to the Doc;
So I eat them with my breakfast at exactly six o’clock.

At two I take the second dose and one before I sleep;
If I should die before I wake my homies don't you weep.

I've had a good long life and these pills have made it so;
And I'm ready but not waiting for when it's time to go.

I Once was a Hobbit

Some friends came to visit
One fine sunny day
I showed them around the house
The old tour
In the usual mundane way

The kitchen and the bedrooms
The bathroom and garage
Around the yard then back inside
A basic home
And not too large

We sat beside the fireplace
The embers burned bright
Where across the wide back window
There hangs
A stained glass reflecting light

Like the painting by Diego Rivera
In the picture there kneels a woman
Holding a calla lily bundle
In the yard
Beyond my window grows a lemon

On the hill above the backyard
Could be seen on that sunny day
I thought hidden by the shrubbery
A round door
And dead giveaway

As I pondered on Hobbit days gone by
One guest inquired just then
About the curious portal beyond
Oh that
I answered is where zombies live

Hey look there’s one now I shouted
As chuckles erupted from my odd joke
Followed by awkward uneasiness
Then silence
Stoking my pipe I puffed out some smoke

Later after dinner they left me
And I sat warming feet by the fire
Smug in the knowledge of my secret
I once was a Hobbit
Now I’m only a liar
