I too agree with Susan, who agreed with Big mike who agreed with Jan, who agreed with...banning the offender but don't nuke the threads that were historically important.

I've been personally boycotting S-T because I get tired of silverbacks behaving like adolescents who need their butts whacked.

I almost never post here, but I do this forum a lot. Thank you for hosting this resource for us.

I don't understand people who go out of their way to not make this fun - its your past time, your hobby, your enjoyment in life. Why would someone go out of their way to community not fun?

Thanks to all that contribute. A lot of good information here.

I agree with everybody agreeing with everyone....

Wait....

Let me start over. I'm sure it's not easy doing the site, and you'd rather be outside doing something much more of interest - so thanks for keeping it rolling. In case she gets banned despite being a warm and amazing person (at least from her posts) quoted in full JAN said (and everyone so far has agreed):
"I don't have any problem with abusive people being banned from Supertopo, especially if they've been previously warned. What I have problems with is the destruction of all of their contributions which include a lot of historical material.

RJ promised us after the deletion of Dr. F's threads that this would not happen anymore and yet it just did. RJ also promised us that he would try to restore some of those threads but that also never happened. Several people working in high tech fields have offered to help with the programming so that offensive people and their posts can be removed without destroying the continuity of threads and that also has never happened.

It's not surprising then that many people have become cynical about this site and many have left voluntarily."

1 instance of many to clearly illustrate that point. When Coz got banned for instance (2nd time, not the first), all his great climbing content disappeared, including the tale of his and Bachars First Ascent of Southern Belle on Half Dome. *Poof*

The people who are happy with how this issue is being handled are probably the ones making the least noise about it.

I speculate that half the people who use the forum are lurkers. The complainers make up a small portion of those who do post. Ban as many of them as you like - the proportion of climbing content will probably go up.

It seems like CMac put wheels on asled and pushed it down the hill. And away it went!

But now the sled is a monster that has a chain attached to Chris' foot.

We climbers, we just want to be left alone so we can do what we love.

Chris, there are a bunch of folks who you've managed to snag here, and this forum is obviously an awesome place. But a few upgrades to the forum, or forum policy, might give you more slack in the chain, and allow the sled to coast without much steering.

I think a tazer, or Yellow Card, would be a welcome tool that you can use to zap folks when they've crossed the line. Tazing will cool a lot of folks down. As a user, it's easy to tell when somebody has crossed the line, but a full on buried alive approach is a bit heavy handed. I see that banning somebody is a tough thing to do, and you do it as a last resort. So make it easier by giving yourself a stun gun. That will make banning somebody a much easier task--they've already been warned.

And yeah, I suppose not everybody gets to solo Half Dome.

So whyn't one of you Preservationists contact cmac about FUNDING an archive? There's like a handful of would0be historians on this site.... get after it. Do a kickstarter, I'd kick in 10 bucks, so there!

Coordinate it with cmac, don't do a grassroots insurgency to steal content and users; make it a partnership. Even a non-profit one!!!

There's your solution - raise the money, make the deals, do the work and enjoy the fruits of YOUR labor.

Now how about that??????????????

Is it cool if we just draw from the big pool of our parent's money we lean on for everything else? Cause that's totally hot right now...

Like any of that matters. In fifty years who's gonna remember anyway. How many of you can hum a Benny Goodman song? History has been forgotten many times and repeated for eons. The problem with humans is that they think it matters.

"Take your sh#t and git the f*#k out."

Are you suggesting that CMac & co will typically tell someone who's about to be banned to delete their own material as they are being banned?

You can't be serious...no way it goes down that way. It's being scrubbed on the admin side...I'm curious about their reasons for this.

I am curious, though, about what the rationale is around deleting the content of banned users ...has anyone explained this?

This is easy. When you ban a user, it's much easier to automatically delete everything they posted, rather than to manually sift through thousands of posts and decide what is worth keeping or dumping. It's just not feasible to do that after the fact. What if there is "an important historical thread" that has some unacceptable content mixed in? No easy solution.

The only way to do it is by planning ahead and implementing features that let the community self-police. From the administrators perspective, it's an issue of investing some time now, or spending more time later on the policing side and responding to user complaints like this.

Edit: The video reply is a good format, personal and authentic, well reasoned, and I can't find fault with anything in it.

The only thing I can say is that if you invest some time now to implement community policing features, it will be easier for you later. Feel free to hit me up for detailed requirements. I used to be a product manager at Cisco Systems, and I've done a fair amount of software development and systems design work.

This forum is hardly a library. At best it is oral history in digital form. The climbing world has lost nothing, other than easy access to beta and good stories.
As far as climbing's contribution to mankind, PLEASE. It's a sport much like surfing...very fun and awesome to those who do it, but to the rest of the 7 billion people on this planet, it doesn't mean Sh!t.

So because the rest of the world doesn't care about climbing, climbers shouldn't either?

Yeah ....

You shouldn't do it.

7 billion people voted against you and banned you.

They don't want climbing, you can't eat climbing, so they want nice juicy carrots.

Chris I, like many, truly appreciate what you have created. I think the energy your putting toward an end to the negativity which has kept me away and many positive contributors will pay off in the end.

Nobody wants to be the mommy of grown folks who by all rights should be mature enough and responsible enough to respect each other. So I thank you for making a stand. The way you have done it by asking us, listening to us and giving enough rope to hang those who push the the limit, is stunning. Especially sense you could nuke the whole for being more trouble than its worth.

You have put out what the forum is meant to be, been broad minded and patient and I am glad your taking a stand. I think your doing admirably. I am hoping that after some trimming it wont take so much baby sitting.

Good luck Bro. Your on the right path.

Chris, had you not created this forum and kept it going all these years, I never would have figured out who my birth dad was, and I never would have found other climbers who knew my birth mom.

I wouldn't have been able to find my second cousin through my birth dad over in Germany, or share with him that he has family in the US, or make plans to travel to meet him for the first time in the same town where my dad's father grew up.

I never would have started climbing.

I never would have had the chance to meet and talk with friends of my birth dad's who (40-odd years later) still carry the burden of self-blame of not having been able to prevent his suicide, and share with them that he likely suffered from celiac disease induced depression, something no one could have known back then.

I never would have been on the receiving end of so much unbelievable kindness that defies measure.

I never would have found the first group of people where I actually fit in!!! And I have made some very special friends as a result.

Thanks to you and your efforts, my daughter will know where she came from.

It will be 3 years ago, in March, that the adoption agency confirmed that my "guess" as to who my dad might be was confirmed in an email. From my humble perspective, I can't imagine a greater gift.

Thank you, from my heart, for changing my world, and for all that you do to create a place where this odd lot can congregate.
