Just leave it at home when you go climbing...why risk losing it from around your neck? Oh, and congrats! You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a custom jeweler in Seattle who can craft it for you - sounds cool!

Once, when I got married, I was also not looking forward to buying myself a ring as I don't enjoy jewelry. When I was in the Sonora area, I went into a blacksmith shop in that old heritage town. They sold black steel rings($2)that kinda even look like mini pitons. They are actually horseshoe nails.
Horseshoe nails represent wedding rings from the 1800s for those whom could not afford pricey ones back then!

Short history here....

Have it powder-coated black, that way the original paint will never come off even climbing with it.

congrats

A dremel tool with a fine sander and buffer will take the sharp edges off of any ring right quick.

One DIY option:

Find a thick walled stainless bushing (commonly known as a spacer ring) that's the size closest (but slightly smaller than) your ring size.

Have an auto shop or machine shop bore it out to the correct size for your finger.

Dremel the inner edges with a sander + buffer head to radius and polish them for comfort.

Belt sand or bench grind the outer surfaces to form the hex. You can print out the following drawing to the right scale on label stock and adhere it to the actual workpiece.

Finished the outer edges with the Dremel, than the entire outer ring with a bench grinder polishing wheel with the right polishing compound for stainless.

Other than boring the inner diameter out - sub 2 hour project in my shop, easy.

It'll match your crampons...

Plus, you can use it for pro in a pinch

Austin Moore is a climber that designs and makes jewelry for climbers (and non-climbers) - here are a few of his pieces, some that you may be interested and some that I thought were pretty cool. His Etsy shop is called Moore Design 13.

One template. You'd probably want to thin the walls out a bit, though. Looks heavy.

to stir the pot a little... Why do you want a ring that is about you and your climbing?

isn't the ring about your commitment to your life going forward ...with your wife? when i look at my ring i think of my wife.

ymmv..fwiw..etc...

congrats d00d!

oh.. and i second the thoughts about the sharp edges and how it feels wearing it.

How old are you? does a ring mean that much to either of you ?

Art is cool.

BTW, I have a vintage hex that's the perfect size for a practice work piece. Trade ya for an old rope ;)

My wife got us a pair of these Qalo rings to wear when we climb. I love it. Went crack climbing wearing it yesterday, no worries. We have normal rings too. I do remember planning to do something grand and creative, then I remembered that jewelry is not a priority to me and snapped out of it.

I wear a twelve dollar silver ring on my hand proudly, have so for four whole months. Yeah, it's become ovalized, but it fits my hand better now, so that's great. As a tradesperson, I'm marginally concerned about it in the event of a hand smashing incident. I've been told that magnesium rings will shatter, rather than crush, if you smash your hand. So, when I buy a new ring, it might be magnesium.

Or, it might be a super baller ring, with gems and stuff. Who the f*#k knows, it's just a symbol.

looks easy from here

Thanks for the insightful post, spambot.

Between climbing, working in a hospital, and firefighting, my wife and I haven't worn our rings for probably 5 years now. I tried to put mine on for my brother's wedding 3 years ago and it wouldn't get past the last knuckle.

I'm also trying to find a hexa-ring but in addition, I want to make an engraving on it. With names of my friend and my wife. It should look cool and will be absolutely unique.

Hi Stellarin,
I'm not sure about the hexa-rings, but for sure, you can check Laser Engraving store and they will make you any engravement on it like you wish. They have many types of the rings on the website, maybe you can also find there a hexentric one.
Good luck.

How bout a ring of stacked hexes around the band (in profile). Maybe add a couple of stacked nuts. Find some granite or quartz with gold and inlay it in one or a few of the hexes.

kind of like this but with hexes?

BITD, I just hit-up this machinist friend and he cut a #11 Hex for bracelets (open and closed). They were even bead blasted or polished. I think BD even sold some of their own at one time after that. So, creating a ring out of original stock wouldn’t be so difficult.
