Allright, I know there are some jewelers and other stylish folk on this site. Help a climber out!
I'm getting married in June and I got her ring all taken care of and stuff, but she keeps asking me about mine. I've never worn jewelry in my life, but I figure I ought to get a ring.
Not being a jewelry person, a lot of rings look pretty much the same to me, so I thought maybe I could try to find/have made something more representative of me. I'd like it to be climbing/mountain related and I thought of a hexentric (yes, I'm old enough to have climbed on them).
Would it work to have a ring in the shape of a hex (circular on the inside of course), or would this end up horribly uncomfortable? Does anyone make such a thing? My google searching has not resulted in much.
I was also thinking of the whole mountain profile in a ring thing, there are lots of styles on etsy if I search for "mountain ring". I have a spot spot for the Olympic Mountains in Washington that would be cool to have in profile.
Even better if i can get it engraved on my hex!
Or is this all a horrible idea and I'm going to hate wearing a ring and lose it in a week anyways (i.e. get a cheap plain titanium ring)?
Other cool climbing related ring suggestions?

If you get a tattoo of a ring on your finger, you will never lose it nor get your ring/finger stuck in a crack.

I just keep the ring on a piece of perlon and wear it as a necklace. I wear it like that every day and it's impossible to loose or get stuck.

ring shopping really sucks.
look online, there are a lot of boutique ring makers selling interesting things there. you can get some ideas on etsy, or even buy your ring there. the brick and mortar jewelers are basically all selling the same, pretty boring things and going there is (mildly) soul sucking. cool idea and good luck.

... ring/finger stuck in a crack. Even just having them hang on an edge will put the fear of god in ya real quick, but
I still wear my wedding ring and one my deceased mom gave me anyway.

I know a guy who peeled all the skin off his ring finger that way.

Big congratulations to you both!!
I think it would be horribly uncomfortable.
And Really the ring has nothing to do with who you are or climbing. I wear almost no other jewelry than my wedding and anniversary rings. What I love about them is the weight of the metal on my finger. It's a reminder of the person I love. What message are you sending to you wife to be to merge that symbol of her with climbing?
You also love climbing. That's Great, so there are lots of ways to express that. You can get a hexentric charm and wear it as a neclace or bracelet. I always Think it looks sexy when guys wear a discrete piece of jewelry.

I've seen one just like you want. Damned if I can remember where. ORG maybe? It was on a climber.
Take a small hex, cut it the thickness you want the ring and go from there. but aluminum sucks. Bad idea.
Good luck and congrats!

I think we were married for 7 years before we got rings, and as a carpenter and climber I kept taking it on and off, de-gloving is no joke. One winter day with swollen digits it wouldn't go on the ring finger, so I stuck it on the pinky where it was a little loose. I'm guessing it came off on a chairlift when I pulled off a glove, never saw it again.
Went without for a number of years, then got one tattooed on for my 25th wedding anniversary. We had family tattoo night while visiting my daughter in Asheville. I've had several people look at it and say, "whoa, that's commitment" to which I usually reply, "not really, if I get divorced I'll just cut it off."
It's my only ink, I'm content to wear it until I die.

google "hexagonal ring"...
here are a couple but it looks like there are lots more...
i know you said you didn't want it to be hexagonal on the inside, but it might not be as bad as you think...

Congratulations St!
You can order a stock Ti ring for about 60 bucks at a number of places - inside engraving included. I wonder how much they'd charge to fine mill or engrave an outline of the Olympics around the outer surface?
Ti rings are usually a side business for aerospace parts manufacturers, so they usually have the capability to do just about anything.

Congrats on the impending nuptials! Very exciting times.
Personally, I prefer a low profile, simple ring, and wear it on a chain around my neck when I'm doing anything serious with my hands. I'd find a hexagonal ring (or anything with similar projections) to be terribly annoying.

Thanks for the congrats and advice everyone! Yeah, I know the significance of the ring is more important than the thing itself, but I thought it might as well be something I like if it's my only piece of jewelry. Haven't made my mind up yet so it sounds like I'll have to do some emailing/asking.
I hadn't actually googled Hexagonal Ring. I was of course thinking of the climbing hex shape, but maybe I can find someone to ask about a custom lopsided version?
I had no intention of climbing with the thing, the breakable cord around the neck is probably my best option there.
No thanks for that picture! :-) I didn't need to see that to know what was meant.
Keep the suggestions coming though! I find it hard to believe no climber has ever thought of a hexentric ring before. Maybe I'll just have to take a hacksaw and a drill to the shiny #5 BD hex I never use. I can't bear to do that to the vintage Chounaird one as that would break up my set. Of course I don't want to actually wear aluminum.

", the breakable cord around the neck is probably my best option there. "
If that 'breakable cord' breaks while you're 6 pitches up, and you lose that thing, both you & your betrothed would be really bummed. In such places, maybe better to take it off & safely store it somewhere.

I went with a simple gold band. I am more attached to it than I expected I would be. I was given the green light to not wear it if I didn't want to, but I still like to wear it. It goes either on my climbing shoe biner onto my harness at the gym, or in the otherwise useless cargo pocket of my climbing pants when I am outside. So far no issues.
I hate crap around my neck.
To each his own.

For day-to-day wear, put a lot of thought into the feel of the edge of the ring against your skin. It's easier to think about how it looks rather than how it feels when you are in the shopping around phase.
Even if you are fine with the edges for normal wear, think about holding hands with your spouse, or someday holding hands with children if that is in your future. The sharp edges on my ring sometimes get in the way for that.
