wingate is a type a sedimentary deposit referring to aeolian specific sand stone. it's finer grain, and more solid cementing agent make is a premium medium to climb on. not to mention is legendary vertical fracture characteristic. better known to climbers as "splitters". the name is derived from the arizona town of wingate.

Named for outcrops near Fort Wingate, NM, by Clarence Dutton in 1884.
