If you're a guy tell her it will help you get off of drugs, if you're a gal just tell her it's a great way to meet single doctors.

Donini...

Well, either don't tell, or just teach her how to climb!!!

I remember Jaysen calling his mom on the portaledge on el cap somewhere and she would freak out about how dangerous it seemed!

That is because mrs. Henderson didn't know how it worked... My mom knows how it works a little so she knows it is not "crazy" but rather very cool!!!!

So I don't freaken know how to tell... For me, my mom was there when I was learning and from the get go!!

"they will love you and support you no matter what you do" ... right?

I'd sent my mom a lot of pictures over the years. When she came out to visit, I took her out to watch while I soloed a few routes. She said "It's a lot scarier in person."

I think she had a life insurance policy on me for a few years. I guess I should've had one for her.

When I was eleven year old I followed someone up Little Fingers on Roger's Slide on Lake George in NY. I took serious note of my mom's reaction to seeing a photo of the 700 ft cliff and her being informed that her son had somehow climbed up that thing. It was a dangerous moment in my nascent climbing career- at that age, I resolved solemnly to down play it as best I could to avoid a total ban on the endeavor from on high.

Four years later, George Willig captured the media's attention by climbing the World Trade Center. Gol-durn you George ! What the hell was he trying to do to me! My mother cornered me, and yelled "AHA !! So that's what you're up to, I knew it!

All over the television the news showed George aiding up the side of the tallest building around and how was I gonna play that one? It was only through the gravest assurance and protestations that I could muster, that I finally convinced her that this George guy had nothing to do with what I was up to. Thanks George, I mean really, it was tough enough without that show of yours.

It took awhile to get back under the radar with my trips to go "camping" up at the Gunks on the weekend.

She musta thought, "Boy that kid is a "camping fool' " she knew what I was up to, but by that time she had adopted a forerunner of the Don't ask, don't tell policy.
