An Uzbeck ref? Really, for a quarterfinal match?

3 of the 4 quartersfinals referees are from UEFA with one of the teams in the match they are doing being from that confederation. Very unusual.

Contact just now on Campell's back in the box no call.

Coincidence?

He's been inconsistent, to say the least. That said, wazzup with Van Persie?
How many offsides on him, 6? Does he have Rooneyism? Get him out of there and bring on Huntelaar!

Man, say what you will about Robben the guy packs a V-12 from Maranello!

What an awful game. I wish both teams could lose.

It looks like Sneijder has Rooneyism.

Pretty strange switching keepers for the shootout but van Gaal isn't given to whimsy.

I give Los Ticos a lot for credit for not breaking down in their defending 1/3

EDIT: impressive PKs by the Dutch & saves by Krul

Van Gaal saved his best substitution for last. I was really hoping Los Ticos would squeeze through, but as much as I detest all the theatrics the Dutch put on display, the best team won. What an incredible back line the Costa Ricans have, masters of the offside trap.

Come on Argentina!

Hats off to Costa Rica, definitely the surprise of the tourney. Navas was amazing and can't believe how many offsides the Dutch had. The better team won, but they had to work their asses off.

When Krul came in I was questioning putting in someone who hasn't played in a game for awhile. Looks like it didn't matter and Krul's confidence showed.

Semifinals will be good.

How the Dutch celebrate a goal against Argentina (we'll see if it happens again):

tricky bastards

well, it's been a wild ride, worthy of Mr. Toad. I'm actually relieved it's over. Was worried about my health from so many stressful games in a row. That's not a joke!

Ready to leave this thing to the hard-core players, and fans.

Why are people writing "Brasil" but not "Deutschland"?
The modern trend is probably against the use of exonyms, but why are people focusing solely (or almost solely) on Brazil/Brasil?
Since this is an English language website, I propose we use "Brazil" until the use of "Brasil" in English becomes standard, if it ever does.

Anyway, people who are paying attention will notice that I correctly predicted all of the teams in the seminfinals.
Now it's a bit tougher, and we've got some complicating factors.
Home field is a big advantage, but the loss of Neymar seems to outweigh that, so I'm going with Germany.

Germany will win. Brazil had Luiz, Silva, Neymar, 8 mediocre players on the field, Willian on the bench, and no strategy I could see apart from playing foul.

Now they still have no strategy, Willian will play, but with Willian and Luiz, and no Silva and no Neymar, I guess it's looking worse then before. Unless they play like the first 30 minutes against Chile, and Germany plays like the first 30 minutes against Algeria, Brazil does not stand a chance I think.

tmrw, I think Argentina will win. maybe that is just hope though.

Germany is certainly looking strong, but so is Argentina.

I'm hopin' Brazil takes it--not only to show that Soccer is indeed a team sport, but also because I know what the cup means to the country.

Oscar and Fernandinho have not impressed.
Hulk has failed to deliver. Fred needs a new name.
Jo is their only hope, but against the Siegfried Line?
