This Just In

Football is part skill, part luck. When the two teams are not at very different levels concerning skill, lady luck is a good friend to have.

Maradona in his time cheated - the hand of dog... Let's call it luck.

This is the first time a European team has won football WC when the WC has been hosted in North/South America.

Brazil's 1958 win in Sweden is the first and only time a North/South American team has won when a European country has hosted WC.

True Marlow, I think luck is involved with most things in life. Like the ol baseball saying goes "it is a game of inches" as well or centimeters;-)

Whenever I hear it's never been done before, I tend to think it's bound to happen then.

I think Cahill's goal was numero uno. Total volley, not like
James'. . .

I like that way of thinking - leaving things open, possibilisme (Arne Næss)...

Football is skill and luck. And that's how it should be. But as we have seen from history, it's also the biased ref and bribed players... I wonder if we'll ever see the truth about the Camerun case?

SteveW, thank you. I've played a lot of footie and vollying a 40 or 50 yard ball from behind
like Cahill did with such accuracy and power (duh!) is mind-boggling! Chesting it first is
comparatively child's play. He had to redirect it about 145 degrees in the horizontal plane not
to mention redirecting the downward trajectory.

No doubt Cahill from a technical standpoint. Green's right behind him,
But the biggest and most meaningful is Gotze's.

Here's how I'd rank the top 10 teams based on their performance at the WC...

EDIT
Germany
Argentina
Netherlands
Colombia
Mexico
France (or Brazil w/Neymar?)
Belgium
Switzerland
Costa Rica
Uruguay or Brazil (w/o Neymar) or Ghana?

Maradona in his time cheated - the hand of dog...

Is that a deliberate typo Marlow? Maradona"s so called "header" is known as the hand of god. :)

Heard a report on the way home from work, a journalist from Germany was saying that the celebrations are over for Germany and they are already worrying about what is next that needs to be done.....

They never stop.... That's a winner for ya...

(The journalist was warning Germany to not worry now, there will be time for that, and to continue the celebrations...)

Someone mentioned best goals...

Ok, I have to start with saying Cahill's goal was out-f*#king-standing and is most definitely will be part of highlight reels for many many world cups to come...

As for the video I post.... Looking through this list I say if you are the kind of striker who is expected to score a goal, you automatically have a harder time getting onto the top 10 lists just because... that's what they are born to do... that's what they do...

But that free kick from David Ruiz... if there is a way to slow down the video more I'l bet that all does not complete a single rotation... Try catching that knucke-ball!

Andy

I know.

From Wikipedia (1986 World Cup):
Replays showed that the first goal was scored by striking the ball with his hand. Maradona was coyly evasive, describing it as "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God." It became known as the "Hand of God". Ultimately, on 22 August 2005 Maradona acknowledged on his television show that he had hit the ball with his hand purposely, and no contact with his head was made, and that he immediately knew the goal was illegitimate. This became known as an international fiasco in World Cup history. The goal stood, much to the wrath of the English players.

I have no doubt that Messi is a much better and more consistent football player than Maradona was and a much better role model. Maradona snorted so much cocaine from 1984 and onwards playing for Napoli that it to a high degree interfered with his ability to play football.

To me it wasn't the hand of God. The hand of dog fits just as well.

The American newspaper The Houston Chronicle wrote about Maradona:
To understand the gargantuan shadow Maradona casts over his football-mad homeland, one has to conjure up the athleticism of Michael Jordan, the power of Babe Ruth – and the human fallibility of Mike Tyson. Lump them together in a single barrel-chested man with shaggy black hair and you have El Diego, idol to the millions who call him D10S, a mashup of his playing number and the Spanish word for God.

"In Argentina, Maradona is considered a sports hero to many. He is idolized, receiving the name of "God". On the idolatry that exists in Argentina, former teammate Jorge Valdano said: "At the time that Maradona retired from active football, left traumatized Argentina. Maradona was more than just a great footballer. It was a special compensation factor for a country that in a few years lived several military dictatorships and social frustrations of all kinds". Valdano added that "Maradona offered to the Argentines a way out of their collective frustration, and that's why people love him. There is a divine figure."

A not very well chosen role model...

Sad and rather fitting for Argentina whose idolatry also stoops to Peron,
Evita, and now Cristina.

Now Brasil is admitting the WC costs could go north of $14 Bazillion - way
over three times the S Africa WC. Will Manaus even get a pro team to put
in their glory hole?
