I thought Brazil were poor today. The last minute shot by Chile that came back off the cross bar could have sent Brazil out and penalties is just a lottery. Agree with comments above if Brazil carry on like that then they won't get passed Germany.

Holland 2. Mexico 0. Memo The Midget ain't gonna cut it today.

Ticos 2. Greece 0

I have been amazed at the poor condition of the pitches and today's looks really thin.

An amazing number of empty seats today, too. WTF.

It's too hot.

The Dutch defense looks very suspect, no?
The Tri is really working the flop, to no avail thank heavens.

Edit: Wow, Robben was clearly fouled. The ref was way behind the play.
Two refs are really needed.

Wow, Cillesen was really slow to react, no? Holland don't look like they want to play.

Can't say that the penalties are any more of a lottery than the rest of the game, which has a strong lottery quality to it. That's a function of actually scoring a goal being a rare event, and it's not going to change until the they change the rules.
Holland was almost knocked out today despite being a clearly superior team.

I know a lot you soccer fans don't want to hear any criticism of your beloved game, but I'm going to keep calling it as I see it, supported by evidence rather than by anti-American BS that since they like soccer more in the rest of the world than we do, soccer must be great.
Anyway, the Holland MX game was exciting at least at the end, so it's all good.
Hard to get too excited about Costa Rica v. Greece, but maybe that means it will be a good game!

Wow, 80th minute implosion by Mexico. They had it in the bag until they started sliding back into a defensive posture.

I believe that on the pitch today, the grass was so poor and thin that they've been spray painting the turf with green paint to give the illusion of a well kept venue.

Man what a game. The Dutch were beat, but pulled it out. Sneijder's goal was perfect and those are easy to shank. Dos Santos' was awesome too.
Oh Robben, such a flopper. Everyone knew he was going down and his classic arm flail fall got the call again.

I am happy to see the Netherlands continue through though.

Go Costa Rica.

Replay is needed in soccer and red cards for a flop. Until then, you'll have these BS games called by a ref who can't possibly see the entire field. It's not a "beautiful" game.

I was pulling for Netherlands but how awful for Mexico. Really pisses me off.

Robben played brilliantly. He gave 100% for 90 minutes and carried Netherlands through. That's more than I can say about all the other players. There were many sleepwalkers the first half. The penal was fair, since there was contact. AND: there was theatre involved. A fair penal and a bit of acting/theater when falling are not two mutually exclusive measures.

makeup penal,

WTF is that? I mean, common. A make up penalty? Thats part of the game? Must be hidden in the rule book somewhere under BS calls by the ref. Reviews are needed both ways because the consequences are higher is soccer than any other sport.

The contact is clear. He steps on Robben's foot. You can easily see that. And first after stepping on Robben's foot - the acting/theatre occurs. Fair penal.
