One of my first thoughts after the 2013 incident - who the heck carries a .22 rifle? Seems to me, among rednecks, it's the kind a gun you hand your 8yr old. However, I'm not an expert on redneck culture. The whole .22 thing coupled with someone who seemed to have a driver's license and from redneck central WY - it seemed odd to me.

However, here, it makes more sense - some poor dumb immigrant with no clue nor sense of culture and esteem buys the cheapest gun he can find.

That arrest photo - the look on his face - I almost took a swing at my monitor. I hope they fry him.

Really, and wazzup with cocking yer head up so you look two inches taller?
Don't they know how to take a proper mug shot in Wyoming?

Sounds like you are onto something Couchmaster. Very perceptive. This guy is a good argument for the electric chair. In fact I would volunteer to throw the switch.

As a climbing related side note: Aaron Hueys spectacular Ten Sleep climbing guide just came out last week. It's identical to a prayer book in style. I mean, it feels like the prayerbook was lifted from church and reprinted. Leather bible cover, silk place holder ribbon and all the rest. Except great pics too, Huey being a very artistic and professional caliber photojournalist. Title: "Holy Ten Sleep: Electric Koolaid 3D Acid Test". (take off from the Tom Wolfe title and it's got 3 D effects in it.) LOL

$100 - bet that got ya to stop laughing:-) Don't tell Chris as he'll probably bump the price the Supertopos are going for. Huey has a great web site as well. I haven't climbed at Ten Sleep yet, not really a bolted climber guy although I'm getting there as my son clips a lot of bolts. Love to road trip there with him. Wonder how many thousands of bolts are at Ten Sleep?

Here's a very well written review of the sold out last edition called "Lies and propaganda, Ten Sleep" http://www.dpmclimbing.com/climbing-gear/view/lies-and-propaganda-ten-sleep-wyoming

One more thought - seemed from the original 2013 story, the victim may recognise the shooter from a restaurant or some-such. Shooter seems like the kind of guy who would freak out or misinterpret something he overheard the victim say ... ? Maybe someone has victim's contact, send him the mugshot...

Looks like any potential links will be investigated.

http://www.kpax.com/story/29670877/identity-of-suspect-in-pryor-double-homicide-confirmed-booking-photo-released

The homicide took place within the boundaries of Big Horn County. The County Attorney Jay Harris said he plans to open a full investigation into Mendoza's activities while he was in the county, before the homicide occurred.

"We have very strong leads that he was not here by happenstance," Harris said over the phone Thursday.

Ten Sleep has long been one of my favorite places. And I was just bragging on another thread about how crime free are Wyoming and Montana, and now this.

The shooter looks as though he is older than 18, and probably mentally ill, too. I join the county DA in wondering what this guy was doing in Big Horn County and in Pryor.

On another note, I am sort of sorry the climbers did not have any self-defense with them, especially since Wyoming is kindly about such things. No, I do not mean bear spray.

My heart goes out to the family of the recent victims and to the family of the Ten Sleep climber and his partner. I hope they find the criminal(s) and that there is an in depth investigation.

Good call, couchmaster.

Charges dropped against the convicted killer, Mexican Jesus Mendoza. http://www.wyodaily.com/story/2018/02/02/news/charges-dropped-against-ten-sleep-canyon-shooter/6407.html

"WORLAND – Attempted second degree murder charges have been dropped in the case of a 2013 shooting in Ten Sleep Canyon, previously admitted to by former Worland resident Jesus Y. Deniz, currently serving a life sentence in Montana for a 2015 double murder.

As previously reported in the Northern Wyoming Daily News, during the early morning hours of Sept. 16, 2013, emergency room staff at Washakie Medical Center in Worland notified law enforcement that gunshot victim Jose Luis Mosquera Araujo, of Ecuador, had visited the ER.

Araujo and girlfriend Ana Deaconu, rock climbers, had been camping in Ten Sleep Canyon when at about 2 a.m., they heard something fall on their tent. Exiting the tent, they heard the sound of a gunshot and Araujo felt like he had been hit with something.

Araujo and Deaconu then left the canyon to visit the ER in Worland.

Araujo survived the shooting and returned to Ecuador, but the case went unsolved for two years.

After his arrest for the July 2015 Pryor, Mont., murders of Jason and Tana Shane, along with the wounding their daughter Jorah, Deniz admitted to authorities that he had committed the Ten Sleep Canyon shooting, and was charged by the Washakie County Attorney’s Office in October 2015.

After charges were dropped in January, Washakie County Attorney John Worrall explained that “he [Deniz] got life plus 60 years[for the Montana murders], so there’s no point in filing a detainer on a dead guy. Plus we would have to import two witnesses from Ecuador for a crime he already admitted to.”

Worrall verified that the Washakie County Victims Advocate office has made an attempt to contact Jose Araujo of the county’s decision to drop the charges."
