BJ quizzed:
"Your link isn't that explanatory. Did Jesus Deniz Mendoza cop to the Ten Sleep shooting? "

You can try reading it twice BJ. But S...L...O...W...L...Y. And cue the Perry Mason music in the background the 2nd time to help you focus:-)

Good luck!

Mark M said, quote:
"I get it jackass that you figured out the Jesus angle, but you sure didn't link to the latest news."

Hey Mark, I thought that I said that lighthearted and teasingly, not snarky like you think. Anyway, the earlier link just upthread had all the info if you go back and click it. I was going off of that and didn't think I needed to repost (before my post) Wyrockmans link. Take a cleansing breath will ya:-)

The link had this, quote -
"Deniz continued, “I shot him. I heard him cry out in pain. Then, when I was driving back to Worland, I saw them pass me. He was holding his hand there. I was like ‘OK.’ Back then, I was fiending (craving drugs) bad. I needed money and that was the only quick way I could get money.”

Deniz told authorities that he did not take any money during the incident and immediately regretted shooting Araujo.

Deniz said he needed money for drugs.

The affidavit concludes, “By Jesus’ own admission, he was the person who shot Jose Araujo the morning of Sept. 16, 201,3 due to the fact that Jesus knew specific details of the case such as where the shooting happened, luring Jose and Ana out of the tent, shooting Jose and leaving in a panic, and knowing the vehicle which was driven by Ana and Jose on the way to the hospital. These specific details were never released to the media or the public.”

In the coming days, Deniz will be formerly served with the Washakie County charges, but he may never see the inside of a Washakie County Courtroom.

That’s because if Deniz is convicted for the murder charges, the mandatory minimum sentence is life imprisonment and federal jurisdiction takes precedent over state jurisdiction, according to Washakie County John Worrall. If he is found innocent, Deniz will then face charges in Washakie County for the shooting. The maximum penalty for attempted second degree murder is 20 years imprisonment, a fine of $10,000 or both.

Deniz is also facing the death penalty for the Montana murder charges.

A trial date for the federal murder charges has not been set."

I wonder if mental illness is at play here: aside from the capacity to commit a crime, perhaps an inability to recognize or care about the consequences of what he says when questioned, and perhaps he was questioned in a leading way.... Maybe getting the admission was an easy way to close the case in WY? Or maybe the simplest explanation is that the confession is legit.

In any case, there was a comment in the other thread re: Hill-Burton for getting medical expenses paid if you can't afford to pay. Apparently that program ended in 1997 and only ~150 hospitals across the nation still have a leftover obligation in relation to it. No hospitals in Wyoming have that obligation today.

To the folks from Ecuador- good luck with recovering and dealing with the financial consequences of all this.

This was such an upsetting story when it first came out. It's great that the shooter is now in jail. Kudos to Couchmaster who saw the link a while ago and made the effort to do something constructive.

If so then good for him but a dope slap to the cops.

The FBI did the sleuthing, whether or not Couchmaster's (correct) theory made it from the Sheriff or WHP to the FBI is unknown.

When I posted this update on MP, Ana (one of the victims in Tensleep) mentioned it was the first she and Jose had heard of it and then called the Washakie Sheriff for an update. I'd have thought they may have made a bit of an effort to contact the victims once the perp was caught, but it isn't surprising.

Good on ya Couchmaster for being proactive, I'm happy to give you the kudos for figuring it out.

Actually, ST members have quite a good record of being proactive. I remember another story of a climber helping police recover stolen climbing gear. And then there's all the lost gear that's found and returned. No passive handwringers here.

Looks like they are prosecuting him for shooting the Peruvian climber. Quote last paragraph:
"Mendoza faces a separate accusation of attempted second-degree murder in Washakie County, Wyo., where authorities say he shot a man at a campground near the small town of Ten Sleep during a 2013 robbery attempt."

They're saying robbery attempt? It would be interesting to see what his youth criminal record looked like. He evidently came into the country from Mexico a while back.
