Containment of the Aspen fire north of Huntington Lake remained at 75% Tuesday, but more personnel have been sent home, the U.S. Forest Service said.

The number of personnel on the fire dropped to 1,523 from 1,828 on Sunday, officials said. As of Wednesday morning, the fire -- sparked by lightning on July 22 -- had burned 21,930 acres.

While the number of firefighting personnel decreased, the cost of fighting the fire increased to $25 million from $21.5 million reported Sunday.

Recreation and businesses remain open in the areas of Shaver Lake, Huntington Lake, Lake Thomas Edison, Florence Lake and Mono Hot Springs. The Badger Flats Campground is open to the public and the Midge Creek Campground will open Wednesday at noon.

Several roads and campgrounds remain closed.

Cough! Recreating in the San Joaquin R drainage sucks lately.

Hi all,

So last Thursday (Aug. 1st) seemed to be the worst day of the 4 we spent in June - from Olancha all the way up to Deadman's it looked worse than a Summer day in L.A. in the 70's. I never considered myself sensitive to bad air but by the time I reached Bishop I was hoarse and this was with only recycled air on in the car. Couldn't see the Whitney range down by Lone Pine and could barely make out Mammoth Mtn. Pretty bad.

Past Deadman's it cleared some and on the June Lake Loop it was hazy but better.

So for the next few days it would be clear in the am, then fully smokey/hazy in a matter of an hour depending on the wind shift by afternoon. Monday driving home down the Owen's Valley it was better but still hazy.

I hope the rest of the monsoon season isn't bad and that we don't have more fires. This was definitely the worst I've ever seen it up there.

spent last week as trail crew leader out of Lake Edison on the west side, only 15 miles or so east of the fire. Smoke most of the time, although always worse in the afternoon with westerly winds.

The last few days would have been the worst, as they were setting very large backfires to burn into the fire.

The worst of this should be over soon.

smokey at Fresno Dome and Bass Lake today. We had a nice time exploring the Nelder grove of Giant Sequoias, and then headed west to get out of the smoke.

And Mammoth Lakes? That's super smokey too?

Any specific information on the east side would be greatly appreciated.

Is there an area that's not smokey (where there's climbing)?

Thanks! I think I convinced my partner that we need an alternate plan. I wish I could come with one.

Are you kidding me right now?
This (or the rain) is gonna drive off what few tourists found their way up this godforsaken cul de sac.

Oh Bitch. You could always move away from this cul-de-sac. Some of us on the block don't mind the ebb and flow of tourons.

OOPS: Biotch. Sorry for the typo.

It's like Christmas traffic out there. Then throw in the drunkenpaloozas and it is flat out dangerous. I saw a guy fall off the bike path into traffic tonight. They should issue walk home glow sticks for these people. They all think our roads are the John Muir Trail.

And it is smokey

They all are having a good time. Regardless of smoke, cul-de-sacs, or really shitty music. Cut them some slack. Or just run them over and pretend nothing happened. Just don't bitch about it.

So to rephrase:

As much as I'd like to lay into your biotch ass.

It's settling down nicely in the lower valley as well.

Smoke em if you got em.

Or just deal.

Which is what most of us do.

I can't imagine it's f*#king up your V season?
