We awoke this morning to the smokiest conditions I've seen out here in Mammoth Lakes. I know there are many fires down by SoCal and such, could all of this be from those fires?!

Do we have fires much closer than I thought, or is the south wind bringing all this up from SoCal?

Sounds like the smoke is here to stay for awhile based on the latest inciweb reports. Inaccessible terrain and no people or structures in danger, lightning caused, burn baby burn.

Any info, ideas, or guesses on how long this is gonna last!!?? It's really smokey over here, as the west wind is bringing all of the smoke here through mammoth pass. It's pretty crummy for both paragliding and climbing out here. Today at the crag was quite smokey...

Less smoke out here in Mammoth today, but that's probably because of the rain keeping it down. Looks like the fire is growing though....

It is really bad here in the Manmoth area. I just took the Moto to the top of Mt McGee to see how it looked- really thick smoke.

Lots of smoke coming over from the west, the situation is pretty grim over here.

Hey Cragman how's the smoke situation around June Lake now?

If it's still going to be bad later this week and into next weekend, how far north do you think we'd have to go to be able to hike (moderately) without choking to death? Got the family with all ages with us so probably no climbing for us (or very little) and some "common denominator" level hikes.

Thanks for any updates you can give!

Fire is at 35% containment as of this mornings report on Inciweb.

Called someone in June this am who said is was relatively clear (or better) this morning - problem is the afternoon wind which blows the smoke out to the East. We have some family friends who live in June who are going to give us another report later today, so I'll post then.

NOAA (www.noaa.gov) shows smoke through Thurs. night then clear starting Friday. That's also where Howard posts his weather from (NOAA). Not sure what they know - perhaps a wind shift or just anticipation of more control of the fire.

Containment of the Aspen fire north of Huntington Lake remained at 75% Tuesday, but more personnel have been sent home, the U.S. Forest Service said.

The number of personnel on the fire dropped to 1,523 from 1,828 on Sunday, officials said. As of Wednesday morning, the fire -- sparked by lightning on July 22 -- had burned 21,930 acres.

While the number of firefighting personnel decreased, the cost of fighting the fire increased to $25 million from $21.5 million reported Sunday.

Recreation and businesses remain open in the areas of Shaver Lake, Huntington Lake, Lake Thomas Edison, Florence Lake and Mono Hot Springs. The Badger Flats Campground is open to the public and the Midge Creek Campground will open Wednesday at noon.

Several roads and campgrounds remain closed.

Hi all,

So last Thursday (Aug. 1st) seemed to be the worst day of the 4 we spent in June - from Olancha all the way up to Deadman's it looked worse than a Summer day in L.A. in the 70's. I never considered myself sensitive to bad air but by the time I reached Bishop I was hoarse and this was with only recycled air on in the car. Couldn't see the Whitney range down by Lone Pine and could barely make out Mammoth Mtn. Pretty bad.

Past Deadman's it cleared some and on the June Lake Loop it was hazy but better.

So for the next few days it would be clear in the am, then fully smokey/hazy in a matter of an hour depending on the wind shift by afternoon. Monday driving home down the Owen's Valley it was better but still hazy.

I hope the rest of the monsoon season isn't bad and that we don't have more fires. This was definitely the worst I've ever seen it up there.

spent last week as trail crew leader out of Lake Edison on the west side, only 15 miles or so east of the fire. Smoke most of the time, although always worse in the afternoon with westerly winds.

The last few days would have been the worst, as they were setting very large backfires to burn into the fire.

The worst of this should be over soon.
