Well,, NATIVE AMERICANS think of SACRED terms. And the ones i know ALSO consider the flag SACRED. The Choctaw thought so when they were the FIRST code talkers in WW1 .. Now MANY of you pizzle swinging rejects will yammer on of how "WE" treated the Native Americans badly and BLAH BLAH BLAH.

But it would SEEM they had gotten over it LONG AGO. My Indian friends that served in Nam fly that flag too.

So yeah ITS SACRED that song and that flag. It is what we are and how we got to be that.

It SICKENS me that some WONT seperate POLITICS with being an American.

I worship God, but I do think the Anthem is also sacred.

What do you consider to be sacred? Please answer that before you continue to slander.

Or Metallica?

"Sacred" I think IS an appropriate description of the anthem, for many people.

Nationalism and religion are part of the fabric of the same coat. Dissing one's country is akin to dissing their family, or their religion. Peel it back? Its all the same thing.

The 10 Commandments of the American Religion.
1. America stands for freedomme, justice and the American Way, (by God)
2. Americans are The Good Guys. America's enemies are the Bad Guys. (by God)
3. America saved the world, TWICE, out of the goodness of her hearts. (by God)
4. America is the greatest nation that ever was. (by God)
5. America stands for democracy and freedomme, the world over (by God)
6. America was founded on the principles of the christian religion (by God)
7. America only fights just wars to protect the weak and the down trodden (by God)
8. Capitalism is a American and there for good and holy. Communism is not American and there for evil and unholy. (by God)
9. America never committed genocide. (by God)
10. The American Flag is like any other holy relic. You dis the flag, you dis the country, you dis the country you are dissing god. (by God)

My disagreement isn't at issue here. I don't equate nationalism to religion. I did when I was younger, without realizing it. For me its not a religion. I'm pretty sure that for you, it is.

Which of those do YOU disagree with?

Well, the first half of the thread had at least a few good points and almost bordered on a discussion. The second half is dominated by the reptilian-brained rhetoric of the bigots. If only there was a way to cleave the thread in twain, then the 'conjoined twin' thread (more like a benign yet ugly tumor) could continue wherein Ron and Bluering talk about how America is, in fact, their favorite country...by themselves.

Hmmmm

1. I think the notion of Original Intent is ludicrous. America can, has, does and will continue to - redefine itself, its government, its morality, its culture and its policital will and identity. Original intent is stupid beyond all reckoning.

2. America is neither good nor bad.

3. There are no just wars. Behind the scenes, greedy ruthless people are using nationalism and patriotism for personal gain, EVERY TIME.

4. If America detains and tortures people America is committing a great evil in the world. No just nation does this as a matter of State policy.

5. There is NO PLACE for religion anywhere in our government. I don't include manger scenes or crosses up on hills as a particularly important component of that - I'm ok with them but know it opens the door to other religions insisting on displays too.

6. Capitalism is not a form of government, its not holy nor is it inherently good. Communism isn't inherently bad. In boith economic systems, ruthless sonsabitches manipulate things to their advantage at a cost to the greater population.

7. The flag is not a holy relic.

8. I will not swear to god under any circumstances, ever.

9. The freedom of the individual is the measuring stick by which freedom itself is measured.

10. if you are FOR a war, you go FIGHT THE WAR, personally.

11. Corporations aren't people and aren't individuals and should be prohibited from any poloitical contribution any kind. Unions too. Only individuals should be permitted to donate to political causes, no PACs either.

I disagree with none of them. And neither would the "old crusty white guys' who founded this country.

They specifically attributed the goodwill and virtue of men to religion and faith.

You don't have to though, but don't deny their thoughts.

Lisa summed it up well here, in the words of our Founders;

They were wise, those crusty old white guys...

[D]emocracy will soon degenerate into an anarchy, such an anarchy that every man will do what is right in his own eyes and no manís life or property or reputation or liberty will be secure, and every one of these will soon mould itself into a system of subordination of all the moral virtues and intellectual abilities, all the powers of wealth, beauty, wit and science, to the wanton pleasures, the capricious will and the execrable cruelty of one or a very few. (John Adams, An Essay on Manís Lust for Power)

No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders. (Samuel Adams to James Warren, 1775)

Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a wretched situation. No theoretical checks ó no form of government can render us secure. To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people, is a chimerical idea. If there be sufficient virtue and intelligence in the community, it will be exercised in the selection of these men. So that we do not depend on their virtue, or put confidence in our rulers, but in the people who are to choose them. (James Madison, Virginia Ratifying Convention)

Wise beyond their time. Where did that timeless wisdom come from, where was it learned? The Bible.
