What are your strategies?

I've got a few of my own, most of which are probably pretty common (don't leave anything in the car, keep stuff out of sight, etc.), but I'm sure there are strategies that other use that are a good idea.

If this subject has been covered in a previous thread, post a link- I'm happy to nuke this one if it's repetitive.

I leave an empty and open rifle case on the back seat. With an empty box of shells randomly (actually carefully and strategically placed) tossed on it. The rifle case is clearly empty, anyone looking in should soon be thinking..."is that guy walking around the woods with a rifle looking at me through his scope right now". Never had an issue.

I have a crappy car with nothing in it and leave the windows down.

I turned a buddy onto the place, as it's a bit in the sticks (not far out sticks, but Forest service road). With a crappy car he parked where I often had, and had his key found, and his trunk opened, everything taken including some sh#t CD's, and then they cut his fuel line, most likely to capture the gasoline.

This on a ratty import car that would have only had 10 gallons of gas max after fueling it up.

That's a great suggestion, couch. Funny, but also very do-able.

I just leave my pet rattler in the car - no need to lock the doors.

LOL, same idea. I just leave an ammo box on the ground open and the plastic tray out and empty.

I do have a hide-a-key on the outside of my van, but it is only for the door. The ignition key is hidden in a separate place inside the van, which I highly doubt could be found by even someone with a day to look for it. So at least I know my van wouldn't likely be stolen.

Ron O. once posted here that he put a crappy(literally) pair of undies atop a pile of dirt clothes in the back of his rig, and placed valuables under the pile, feeling that would be a deterrent.

I like the "Don't Tread on Me" sticker better than the NRA ones. When I think NRA, I think middle age obese man with a 30-06 and a few rounds going to the range to talk about 'Murica. Who wouldn't want to break into that guy's car?

Good point. We're looking for avoidance strategies, not invitations.

Just find a few pieces of trash laying around your house that look worthless. If they see you have a dirty cab, they probably won't assume your brand new Iphone 5 is hidden in your glove box.

Bumper stickers saying you are a gun owner INCREASES the chance of a break in dummies.

I still think we need to do a sting at JT.

That's a pretty false thing to say Ron, unless you have statistics showing this.

and what exactly do you think others think when they read the "Don't Tread on Me" sticker?

Parked at mount woodson during prime break-in hour a hundred times, use the same mentality as bears - leave nothing in, car is total sh#t and seems like even if you wanted to steal it, it probably wouldn't start.

Just don't be the BEST car to break in to.

Be careful with some of your ideas: http://www.npr.org/2012/11/14/164974490/reading-maxim-can-make-you-a-target-for-thieves

Also the broken window is usually the most expensive part cost me $400 cause I accidentally left my POS phone in my cup holder overnight.

Usuly I keep nothing in my car, windo down, door unlocked.

This worked when I lived in a low-life area of LA, wher your car would get broken into on a nightly basis. This way I never needed to go get busted locks and windows fixxed.

If im woried that they want my car... yes 2002 Honda Civic is a hot car...

I take the fuel injection relay out.

This way it won't start.

But the real danger at Trailheads is having the wires eaten by rats.

I heard a story about this guy that had a small 1"x 1" box with a intermittent red led stuck to the dashboard of his car, to deter thiefs because it looked like an alarm controller. One day he had his car opened and the only missing thing was that box.

Many years ago I was teaching a rock climbing class at Mission Gorge...all of the clients were parked at the main trailhead area, where the hillside rises steeply directly above the parking area. Some dirtbag(s) hit every car, on the side against the hillside, where they had visual cover from above. The only thing I lost was my ashtray, which was filled with about $4 in change. The damn ashtray cost me $30 from a junkyard.
