You may have heard the sad news that Layton Kor has passed away. More than a legend (which he was to so many of us), he was a kind and gracious person, passionate about climbing to the end. Layton worked as a bricklayer, and for the last several years he struggled with medical problems and expenses that were not covered by insurance. His wife Karen and son Arlan are grieving his loss and dealing with large medical bills.

It's been said that if Layton had a dollar for every climber who repeated one of his routes, he would have been a rich man. If a dollar is what fits your budget, please consider donating it symbolically to honor his memory and help his family out.

Layton was an amazing person, from beginning to end. Often one's idols disappoint in real life. Layton, in real life, surpassed even the huge pedestal he always stood on to me as a young climber, learning about him from legends and stories. He was my hero and my friend, and a beautiful spirit.

Hi Steph (been a while), Jody and I will be setting up a memorial service for climbers to attend.
We were even discussing having one in CO and another for the CA climbers.

Thanks for posting.

Can I make a Suggestion that the words Fund Raiser appear in the title of this thread to distinguish it from the other thread on Layton?

Hey Ron-

I just want to personally thank you for all you've done over the years to help Layton and his family.

Me also, Ron. In fact Layton was a very good friend of yours and it hurts many of us just knowing you too have lost him.

So glad to have been able to repay Layton's generosity in bequeathing so many fine essays in stone.

Camp Camaraderie in the next dimension has unlimited usage. Stay as long as you like.

With fond remembrance of my own days among pals who cared only to climb and for Layton "Hard" Kor and his crew.

An Infinite Number of Ways to Be (Active Meditation)

The late Kor is no more.
No less than a legend and more besides.
Was he enlightened?
A legend is just below a bodhisattva, possibly.
At least they’re in the same league.

Not every legend is a bodhisattva.
I can’t conceive of a man of such temperament being one.
It’s the breaks, I guess.
Look at Mike Borghoff: A man who yearned for the rest of us to understand.
Total opposite, to my mind, from the late Layton.

Both probably got up early of a morning.
The one to go find a new route.
The other to go find a good spot to meditate.
The life of the camp proceeded, enhanced,
Each having contributed in un-counted ways.

Find meaning in activity.
Find activity in finding meaning.
We’re mirrors.
We’re microscopic telescopes.
We’re starlight.

Thanks Chris and Steph.
There are lots of places to post this fundraiser. Contact
Ron Gomez and, of course, Roger Briggs with the Boulder Climbing
Community... The more places it's posted, the more response.

Let's keep this thread bumping and alive and everyone participate.

We all know of Ron's good help, and much help has been given by
many others, mostly anonymously. It's impossible to comprehend
the costs of health care and the kind of burden our friends
have carried. My own health care costs have been off the charts,
and I would have had no way to begin to approach them but for
the help my rock climbing family stepped up and gave. I still struggle
at the limits of my strength and resources. I know this will be the
case for Karen, as she wraps up this chapter of her life, a totally
wonderful and devoted, hard working wife who deserves everything
we can do.

Steph -- Thank you for posting this and the link. [Please consider revising the Thread Title to include Fundraiser.]

As climbers, we have greatly benefited from those who proceeded us, particularly the visionary and driven climbers like Layton Kor.

This is but a small way of repaying that debt.

I think that it will take Cmac or one of his minions to revise the thread title.
