I was parked at sanatans just out side the park entrance like 30 mins ago an someone stole my backpack with my rope and my entire rack, harness, draws and everything.

Holy shit! Just got it back. Some meth head that lives behind the place made some "calls" and got us our back packs back for $40. Got scammed but really happy to have my sh#t. And F the police they are no help and didn't even show up like they said they would.

This is sadly something that is happening more frequently in Jtree.
Spread the word don't leave gear in the back of trucks, cars with windows down, outside the bathroom/shower at coyote corner, etc!!
Now get your ass back in the park and SSSSEEENNNDDD!!!!

First off - very glad the OP got his rack back, even if it was a set up amongst the dopers. Sort of like he got a $40 ticket for unknowingly driving into the local speed trap!
I'd be interested to know, just for conversational purposes, what the deal was. Gear locked in car, visible, and window broken(no mention of broken window). Gear visible in unlocked car?(doood...what were you thinking???). Gear hidden under carp in unlocked car?(lock yer car, even for a quick run in to some place. Last year I forgot to lock my van - once - and someone stole my daypack out of it. The good news for me was that all that was inside was hairbrush, toothpaste and toothbrush and such. They could have gotten my Nikon camera, laptop, my gear, and my most valuable Teddy.)
I guess this gear scam is sort of like the NYC version of stealing small dogs. Thieves see them tied up as owner steps into a Starbucks or similar, or out of back yard, and then wait for the "Lost Flyers." No market for dognapping in Jtree, obviously. But climbing gear....
edit: when you make a conscious decision to do the wrong thing you get whats coming I'll go one step further with that one. Steve - it's the THOUGHT that counts. And that kind of thinking is not going to serve your own energy well. Set someone's house on FIRE? Are you insane? Consider possibilities: Innocent children and pets inside, owner of most likely rented place who may be uninsured, firemen called to duty because of YOUR behavior, neighbors put at risk, possibly murdering a person who may be a junkie but still probably has a mom, dad, brothers, sisters and maybe kids. And is still a human being.

There is often 1 or 2 cruzers for the entire highway 62.
The cops are doing the best they can... trust me. A lot bigger issues up there than theft, unfortunately : /.

Do you think a "WARNING vehicle protected by 50.000 Volts DC" be a deterrent?

I'll post details tonight. Im gonna go climb like crazy today. But yeah we were kooks leaving the gear in an open bed the truck. And just one small climbing sticker locker.

not sure how that could be, though, when vehicles are parked in lonely
spots, :(
too bad you can't have one of those 'ink' thing attached like some
stores do--it stuff is broken into (or whatever) the INK breaks
open, and at least folks can see WHO it was that stole the stuff...
course, if the police do not do anything, than that won't get them
caught, :(
but--if folks spot them, they'd know who it was that stole...
however, your gear would be all inked up, :(

My favorite was the guide getting his pack nabbed TWICE in the same place. The second lift was mostly gear courtesy of generous Supertopians.
That has to suck.

I am glad you got your gear back!
I will bet you will never do that again.
I have locked my pack with a chain in truck bed. Then had someone try and get it out as I returned.
