No doubt ST is Cali-centric. We Teton zealots get a bone thrown in the courtyard two or three times a month, though.
this is a situation that can be fixed by having more writing from the Cali-eccentric crowd... get to work! you know who you are, no just the Greenies and the 'Zoneys, but all you mountain state folk... WY, MN, SD, WA, OR, NV, NM, VT, ME, NY... we'd like to see more!
Interesting question for this particular post: how many places from Rock 'n' Road have you climbed in? (include places you searched for but didn't find).

KLK: n00bs engidorking each other.
LOL^^^ Description spot on.
I was on that site regularly for several years prior to the Dropzone massacre. It' just got weird, navigating the site got awkward and too many people I enjoyed interacting with had made the jump to this site. I made some efforts to reconnect, but the site was rife with the problems that have already been listed and I don't have time for all this internet sh#t anyhow.
It was a good site at one point. It's got the primo easy-to-find domain name and a huge data-base of valuable information so I'd like to see it hang in there.
Edit to add: The infamous Curt foot belay.. oh the memories...

jd,
While there have been instances of climbers incurring injury or death on walk offs, the statistic is miniscule when compared to rap accidents.
Maybe an investment in approach shoes or more practice will give you more walk off confidence.

The site allowed bullying. There became a group of wannabe cool kids who ganged up on others as sport, with some mods participating. Many people had no interest in seeing nearly every thread devolve into the negativity that was happening, and they left.

I have never understood why the Tetons held so much appeal for so many people. But I fully realize and acknowledge that the Coast Mountains hold the exact same sway over me. In the ST ocean of "California this, Yosemite that" (not that there's anything wrong with that!) you Teton folks need a liferaft, something along the lines of:
http://Squamish Photos and Stories
There may already be one, but I'm too busy making googly eyes and swooning over the Chief to find out.

Excellent idea! This is touched on in the Wyo appreciation thread, with the photos of mtns, routes , rick wyatt etc,but a more Teton ccentric thread need be made by ecentric Tetonions
As for rock n00b it just never had its gears synchromeshed. It took so much time to navigate that it flattened the free flow of ideas

I've been doing my best for awhile now to include more of Squamish into the ST lexicon. Funny, the only reason I came, is all the Squamish pioneers were allready here!!

Westy belongs here. Hope he decides to come back. I like the dude.
I second the motion to bring back Weschrist, cheery and blithe!
Four months we've been without his rhapsodies of contentment and praise. He'll be tickled pink lifting spirits on a forum so troubled and down in the mouth.
...that is...unless...
he's found...a n-n-new forum (sniff)...
...a new forum...to spread contentment and felicity...a new forum with new friends; his greatest happiness!
.....WES! ....we miss the beating of thy joyful heart!
....WES! Dingus pines for thee !

Hey looky there. RC.com has made a change. It seems a company called D4DR media has aquired RC.com. Apparently JT512 wasn't impressed. We will see if anyone else weighs in on the change.

Fatty posted that in the "Soap Box" forum over at RC.com. That forum is pretty much a "gloves-off" forum and doesn't see much moderation. It is interesting that Werner has apparently chosen Fatty as his spokesman, though--I always thought Werner was more than able to speak for himself. Heh

I don't remember all the "rookie" aspects of that, but I do remember a HUGE fall after which the climber builds anchor, clips in, and has the rope that stopped her fall come lose from WHATEVER it caught on with just a tug. I have no idea about the accuracy of the post or the objectivity of the writer, but it was a good and spooky read.
I also remember that the thread degraded into typical 3rd grade RC.com BS.
Since this thread won't die, I will throw in my $.02. RC.com was actually an interesting place a few years back. However, IMHO, poor management, inconsistent moderation, arrogant moderators with limited climbing experience and even less technical knowledge, a handful of pathologically rude and abusive users that posted incessantly and are were more interested in landing verbal cock-punches than in discussing rock climbing all contributed to make the place a prime example of what a toxic cesspool a poorly run internet forum can become.... but that is just my opinion.
Edit to add - I thin it is the PERFECT place for Fatty. He will thrive there.

1. Heavy handed moderation.
2. A small band of regulars engaged in constant circle jerkery and inside jokesterism that seemingly was immune to the otherwise heavy handed moderation.
3. An unattractive and cluttered interface.
4. Low value of content due to a user population heavily skewed toward n00bs.
5. Repetitive threads, typically on basics (see 4 above).
6. A route database that never developed well (MtnProj for the win), because the userbase was thin on experience (see 4 above).
7. Too much segregation/categorization.
8. An abundance of know-it-all types, spraying as an authority on all manner of subjects when they had little to no practical experience in said subjects(again, see 4 above)
The few things I think they ever did well: The OR trade show report byt the vegas dude was great for a couple of years. The photography forum was pretty good at times...I guess that's only two, not a "few". Kind of illustrates the overall point though, don't it?

I remember the post in question there, it happened not long after I got on RC.com for the first time, so 7 or 8 years ago I think. It was called "Ambition and Ego: My 160' fall in Zion."
The thread was nuked by the gal who wrote it, after quite a bit of discussion she determined that no further good would come out of continuing the thread.
I'm not 100% sure of the details anymore, but I seem to recall that she rapped off her rope in the dark, and got caught up in some tat on the wall after going 160 feet or so. I still remember the pictures of her arm, it got seriously flayed with rope burn etc. Beyond lucky for sure, I seem to recall she has kids too. I think her name was Kim?
Anyways, back then RC had a lot of good stuff like that, and not nearly as many personal attacks as it does now. When all the crap started happening, I left for about 5 years, and when I came back it seemed like the crap was all that was left.
