Before I went through the big D and stopped climbing because I couldn't see the holds through all my tears, rockclimbing.com was the happeningest place on the interweb. Now the crickets are only interrupted by the occasional crazy hermit. What the flip happened?

So this must have been news while it was happening or was it a like a slow boiled frog and just sort of died in its sleep?

it's all about content , Supertopo has thoughtful , relevant , interesting threads and discussions.
rockclimbing.com was full of people who had been climbing for six months and thought they were authorities on the subject. They would then dispense condescending advice full of attitude and one-upmanship and the users just got tired of it ...

I find the people over there are mean spirited and at times, vicious (especially in the Beginners forum).
Not at all like the pleasant, supportive, nuturing types here.

Luddite that I am, I still want to pontificate to my brethren. ST, all in all, seems to fit the best although it's far too California-centric.

Farouk, you need to travel. California has great climbing but a lot of the climbing is rather bland.....low angle granite gets old pretty fast.
To get the best of American climbing, forget high gas prices and do some road tripping.

In two words: Poor Management.
In three: Uncaring Absentee Landlord.
The details are all still there if you go digging, but IIRC it went something like this...
1. RC started getting popular
2. The owner of DropZone.com wanted a way to artificially increase the size of their userbase as a way to up ad revenue
3. Owners of DropZone never paid much attention to RC and certainly never participated on the site
4. They then managed to sell the site to NameMedia for a huge profit (I never found out the selling price)
5. NameMedia hired someone new to run the site, and he did a great job of it (this is when it peaked)
6. Unfortunately the ad revenue wasn't where NameMedia wanted, so they decided to fire the guy running it and shutter the site
7. The former owner offered to take over running the site pro-bono as a way to keep it from dropping off the Internet (never found out if money changed hands over this)
8. With no budget for development and the guys running it having no interest in participating, the site festered and became what it is now. In spite of how much some of the Mods try, the fish rots from the head.
Admittedly I'm probably a bit biased due to getting thrown under a bus by Management there during step 8 (I came in as a Mod during step 5 to help make The Lab something interesting and useful), but that's pretty much how it went down. As I said, pretty much all of the above is still in the forum there if you go looking. IIRC the bulk of it was in a post from rrrAdam, who was one of the owners prior to the DropZone guys.

Donnini,
Ignore him. Bill and I plan to see you in Patagonia ASAP. Bill just needs one more year before getting his wings. He deeply misses mountaineering into the big unknown.
