The Blue ones.
Were you ready to roll your eyes?
I'm sitting hear looking out the window and I hear a roar.
A great roar.
An Angel is flying right above my head a few hundred feet.
Sideways.
Slipstream flowing from it's wings.
Now it's gone.
Those big roaring metal Angels that we call Blue.
I love it when they come to town.

Those guys have the neatest toys on the block!
I hope you guys get clear weather this weekend.
I've never seen the Blue Angels, but I've seen the Thunderbirds a bunch.

They've been flying past my window all day.
But I hear that when they party at night, their idea of a good time is to see how many of them can dance on the head of a pin. Kind of like seeing how many frat boys can fit in a telephone booth. Or something.

They flew over Boston Harbor on the 4th & one veered off, heading right for my building (yes, I was working - gotta pay the rent!). My heart practically leapt out of my chest...so cool. Fun reverting back to my 5-year-old self for a coupla minutes there... :D

Not to be a bummer, but the Blue Angels suck!
Wasted time money and energy! Scares the dogs, the vietnamese coworkers, ruins my peace and quiet-and what about the crash possibility-is it gonna take crashing through the Transamerica pyramid for it to stop? Bushwa!

I have to admit they are impressive. Like watching Olympic gymnast's. But I always know and always remind people they are killing machines. If you are a Vietnamese or afghani women running with your children for cover they are the devil incarnate. And when I see hundreds of thousands of Americans ohhing and ahing I feel sad for the future of this country.

Americans like killing machines.
The open house at the local Air Base draws half-a-million or more people every year, as do the various fleet weeks in the port towns.
The thing that generated the most excitement in L.A. this year wasn't the space shuttle at the museum next to the Colosseum. It was the battleship Iowa's arrival at the port.
( if I remember right, the Bay Area had first crack at that battleship, but they didn't want it for some reason )

I thought about the death machines aspect and the traffic and safety issues but I also thought about how Seattle gets together on Seafair weekend. I have met neighbors that I didn't even know I had just from being on the street watching. I used to throw a big party during the weekend and had many happy friends to share food and drink with. The fact that they are not blowing stuff up and entertaining people and bringing people together I think is a good thing. You can dwell on the negative aspects of the jets just as you can focus on the negative aspect of anything we do, but where does that get you?

It was one of the great memories of my childhood watching them fly with my parents at the Camarillo Air Show. I won't trade those days for anything.

You can dwell on the negative aspects of the jets just as you can focus on the negative aspect of anything we do, but where does that get you?
In this particular case, it gets me thinking "Why does it take a celebration of killing machines to get me to meet my neighbors?" That is, why not a celebration of something positive?
Maybe it's because it has been 150 years since war has torn up the US. If we had seen fighter jets screaming in and blowing up our neighbors and our families, I bet we would not be lining up to cheer them. But since it is other people's families that get blown up, it's okay.
So, yeah, I'm all for meeting the neighbors, and having people in the town join together in celebration, but it would be nice it was something other than death that we were celebrating.
What about bunnies?

Hey, Death is a part of Life. No value judgements here. Bunnies are good too. Oops, that was a value judgement. Oh well, carry on.

Moved to SF after living in N.Y. and experiencing collapse of the WTC. Fleet week rolls around, I am awakened from a nap by a low flying, rapidly approaching fighter jet, and nearly sh#t my pants. The Blue Angels flying around the city the week before fleet week is a disturbance and waste of money.

Blue Angels are impressive, but my favorite is the F-4 Phantom. I saw an F-4 do a low altitude high speed pass at an airshow in Galveston TX in 1977. Was the most amazing display of pure power I have ever seen. Two years later i found myself stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Japan. The running track went around the airfield and at one point was very close to the runway. When the F-4s took off you would get a blast of hot air.

They're back! We didn't have them last year. Four of them in formation just did a practice run right over the house. Pucker.
