What i have noticed thru the years is that now the peregrines are back in the Columbia River Gorge literally by the hundreds, that around Beacon Rock and other crags, is that the woodpeckers and other birds that used to be frequently seen, are not around anymore. Sometimes i will see their remnants left by the peregrines. Why do i get the feeling peregrines have rebounded amazingly, but its now at the expense of the other bird specis?

Well, mainly because that's what you want to believe irrespective of facts and reality (particularly with that "hundreds" number). And with respect to other birds and Peregrine predation, a little common sense would tell you it's just like elk and wolves - when the wolves are decimated the elk population gets way out of hand and that causes all kinds of out-of-whack ecological effects over both their ranges. The Peregrines coming back is simply restoring the natural ecological balance relative to other bird species.

Thanks, Greg.

3) The initial list of closures apply only to nesting sites that meet at least one of the following criteria: (1) active at least 2 out of the last 4 years; (2) active last year (2012); (3) active 1 out of the last 3 years.

Did you know these are redundant?
The third one is enough to determine the list:
"(3) active [at least] 1 out of the last 3 years."

It includes the other 2 as special cases.
That is:
(1) active 2 out of the last 4 years can only happen if also active at least one of the last 3 years.
(2) 2012 is one of the last 3 years.

Thanks Clint, I'll pass that on...

To clarify, the closure of the Kat Walk only includes that portion above the closed routes (DNB and adjacent routes). The Kat Walk is still open as a means of descending from the East Buttress.

any updates on the closures lifted since early march?
Last year update was made on April 10 and big part of Arch rock was reopen.
Also what about Peter Pan on El Cap BAse...

Can anyone confirm if the closure applies to South Seas / Pacific Ocean Wall? Someone above posted that it does include those routes but the NPS website says:

El Capitan, Southeast Face - Closure includes all big wall routes between and including "Sea of Dreams" east to "Iron Hawk." At the base, the first 4 pitches of all routes within this area remain open.

Cheers!

South Seas / Pacific Ocean Wall?

Those are open.
They are just left of where the closures start (Sea of Dreams).
