Thank you, Tami. I agree with both you and Marlow. Our show does need some arrangement, but not necessarly like that of Cirque du Soleil. It's just that we've always been more on the traditional side of circus. We've mainly been centering on the skills part. But in the circus it has to be everything --choreography, music, arrangement, etc.

I didn't know Gregory Popovich has his own book. I haven't seen him since 2005... He does a really nice job with the pets.

Rokjox -That's pretty impressive. Lighting really does play a big role in the show and makes the whole thing look totally different when all is set right. When we work in theaters, I always have trouble having the lights set right for my rola bola act. I'm either always blinded by the front lights, or can't see anything from the darkness in front of me...

What part of Florida?
(Is it that carnie town?)

As a sailor/ SCUBA diver/ swamper I really like Florida for about 8-9 months a year.
We live in Winter Haven (where they built the new Legoland). It's between Orlando and Tampa.

I think what you do really cool. I love being on a ship/boat, but I'm just usually there to fish.

ЗАМЕЧАТЕЛЬНО!!!!!!!! Когда наносите визит братях в Глендале? :-)

Is training kitties that much harder than herding them?
Спасибо!! Пока что не знаю. Последний раз мы там выступали в конце 2003-го (под Новый Год), в Civic Auditorium...
It is harder to train cats, because they are kind of stubborn and not in the mood at times, but my mom gets them to perform for food.

is she single?
Haha, no. She's been married for about a year now.

The manna to handstand in the first vid.... Mind blowing!
Yeah, my dad used to be a gymnast and a coach; he taught her well. He's actually the one who invented this trick, where she does the manna with her shoulders twisting all the way around. They used to do an acrobatic duo with my dad and at first she was doing that trick on his hands.

What are the hand pad swivels made from?

It looks almost like a standard 4" electrical junction box.

The base is made of stainless steel. The blocks are made of wood and have free-spinning swivels built into them.

It's not made out of any particular equipment. It was all custom made.

I'm not sure what Simon intended but this has turned out to be a rather cool and interesting thread. I wish I had more to contribute than that.

Not really acrobatics but plenty of showmanship here. I had never heard of this guy before tonight.

Wow cool thread!
Lots of the "love of climbing" is actually a love of experimenting with how far and beautiful you can make the human body be and go - definitely a legit connection with gymnastics and circus style performances
Inspiring

thanks

At training tonight I explained the manna-to-handstand to some of the kids and then spotted one of the more flexible ones ( not strong enough to hold manna ) to do manna and then got hold of her little feet and asked her NOT to move her arms and moved her to handstand. Hahahah!!! Of course she wasn't able to do the dislocate.

I do know one woman who can - Anna Ward is her name - she's been with Cirque Eloize's performance of Rain. She has that kind of shoulder flexibility but probably doesn't have the strength to do the move. :-)None of the kids I teach do !!! It is supremely difficult. Wow !!!!!

Not sure when Popovich's book came out but it's VERY good, easy & quick to read and he sure loves his cats. Yey for families and pets.

Tatasmovik, you live in a very special family. I mean, we all do...for sure....but generational circus families are not common at all here in North America. My background is in gymnastics & climbing. I am not a circus performer but someone who teaches the skills & I learned choreography as an adult. My kids are not pursuing circus as anything but fun.......certainly not as a vocation.

Cheers to you!!!!!
Haha, that's awesome!
I actually remember the shoulder dislocation being just a stretching exercise in gymnastics, just like the splits only it's the shoulders. Even I used to do it. I'd grab my two fingers and twist my shoulders back and forth. But I stopped doing that for some reason (I just didn't need it anymore) and it's just like the splits --if you stop doing it, you loose the flexibility.

Thanks! Cheers to you too and good luck with the kids!

Ihateplastic, thanks for posting that video. This is awesome! Probably the best eccentric trampoline act I remember seeing.

Here's another old act worthy of attention --my grandpa and his brother:

A few reasons I like this thread:

Initial incredible video of masterful hand balancing set in unusual location

Sister of the performer entering the discussion

Tami adding her know-how and attitude

Griswold video

and a small coincidental connection, one of the few remaining books on my Mom's bookshelf, which I only learned of last week:

It is wonderful to find interesting and entertaining stuff you weren't looking for.

http://www.circopedia.org/index.php/Vladimir_Durov

I also looked by act under Hand Balancers and found a woman who would balance on one finger. This was oddly titled as an "Equilibristic Act", but maybe that comes from the same place as calling the Griswold act "eccentric."

Somebody needs to buy Tatasmovik a harness and introduce her to the amazing movements that climbing involves.

Let's go climbing, I bet you and your family would love it.

Great video too, it must be super proud to be a member of your family.

This has turned into a great thread! Thank you tatasmovik for being part of this.

I hope its okay with you for posting this video which shows you and your sister at an early age. Let me know if its not. Very cute, and also amazing how much strength, balance and flexibility you both have. (From Norwegian tv - wow!)

I also saw a clip of your grandfather performing at 65 yo, doing some very high balancing. I'm sure your family has some fascinating stories, with the generations involved and all the places you've travelled and performed.

Thank you, guys.

MH2 -How ironic! "Durov's Corner". They still continue working with their elephants. Speaking of elephants, here's a really nice act

This is from the Moscow Festival my sister went to last October (they both took gold)...
Oh and Tami is right. Where I come from, "equilibrium" ("ekvilibr" in Russian) is how we actually call the hand balancing act in the circus.

Rokjox, I completely agree with you about the lights. Cirque du Soleil's gear is incredible. Thier circus here in Orlando, alone, has the floors going up and down, buildings "growing" out of the stage; not to mention their lights. They have a professional for every aspect of ther show --lights, music composition, choreography, technicians, etc. It's what makes their shows amazing in my view and even more in that sense rather than act-wise (I'm a bit hard to impress in that area).
We've performed at a lot of teathers and usually the lights there are pretty good at those venues. They do program them, but the technician is still there to press the "On" button, haha, and of course make sure that all goes right.

Brandon, I'd love to try. I'm not a guy, though, haha! But honestly, I'm not nearly as strong as my sister. My hands are only good for a little bit of juggling.

kunlun_shan, no problem at all! On this video we're actually in Cremona, Italy. It was a talent competition called "Bravo Bravissimo". They hosted it in several countries, including Bulgaria, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Norway (where the video was taken from), and of course Italy. I had just turned 8 back then and my sister was 10 years old. It was a lot of fun there! But just like most competitions, it wasn't fair. They didn't even give the grand, cash prize to anyone... There were so many talented kids who didn't even get in the final. But we were the only circus act there, so I guess they let us through for the sake of diversity.
And yes sir, we've got a few stories to tell in our occupation. I, alone, have been performing for over 20 years now.
