I don't understand the difference between training a house pet versus a wild animal which has been raised by humans since it was a baby. What most "activists" don't understand is that the ways of disciplining an animal is just as diverse as the ways parents discipline their children. I don't deny that animals have been punished for not doing their job right, some trainers find it as the only way to teach them something, some are plain cruel, but that's not always the case. I know many wild-animal trainers who train their animals with love and food treats (like my mom does). Another thing I'd like to point out is that most wild animals actually live longer in the circus, because they are taken care of. In the wild they have to hunt, sometimes become pray; in the circus, they are washed, brushed, sheltered, vaccinated, and well fed.

Very impressive but has nothing to do with being Russian. I've seen tiny Chinese girls doing those stunts.

When removed a substantial distance from a performance like this, what we perceive is even more two dimensional than as we see it on a computer screen. The brain reconstructs. A performance in full 3D at small distance has to allow a fuller comprehension of what has been achieved. This is the kind of privilege that used to be enjoyed by the likes of Louis XVI. And here it is on ST.

I missed this thread the first time around. A pity, as I actually saw a man perform such a routine as an exhibition, and I found it breath-taking.
While I think the original comment on the issue was not meant respectfully, I also agree that it would be far better with less clothing......however, I mean that in the way that most of the muscle definition and flex is lost in the practice clothing.
I also mean it in the way that the original Olympics were performed nude. Not for prurient interest, but for worship of the perfection of the human body in action.
This type of performance is the result of many years of daily effort, and I'm in awe.

These folks are mind-bending. I wonder if they end up doing damage to joints long term? I have a friend who was very into yoga and crazy flexible--too flexible--and ended up with some pretty serious back issues. Amazing stuff.

I rode the subway up to the Bronx this winter. Suddenly a black guy jumps up and starts yelling something about the hood. Someone cranked up a boombox and the next thing I see is this guy dancing on his hands in a moving subway. Then he did three flips in the aisle without touching the floor with his hands. It was amazing.
