It looks like Sweden is the team to beat in the WWC. They're playing very solidly.

Great drama and grit coming back from a woman down! Game should have been over in regulation. That PK redo was crap.
Rapinoe's cross for the header was the real sh*t. Left footed now less! Seemed like Hope set up the 3rd shooter by going away from her bad shoulder twice, then going the other way. One of the greatest games I've ever seen, despite the ref's.

HaHaHa- Uruguay thrashed Mexico in the match that mattered at La Copa America.
Too bad Mexico hasn't heard of the offside rule.
They scored 1 gol in 3 games. Muy malo.

It's because of the refs that there was anything even remotely interesting about that game.

Damn. Solo may have tweaked a ham warming up. Like that would slow her down.
Interesting article:
Don't expect World Cup semifinalists to get harsh media treatment, even in defeat
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-jones-soccer-usa-france-20110713,0,4827844.column
"England Coach Hope Powell, in an extraordinary and unnecessary outburst after her team's 4-3 penalty-kick loss to France, accused her players of cowardly behavior in not volunteering to take the kicks.
"Three times I had to ask before anyone stepped forward," Powell told the Guardian newspaper. "That's weak, it's cowardice.""
Uh, coach, is your resume up to date?
Wow,the stadium is less than half full.
I don't like it that Rapinoe isn't starting.

There was an interesting article in the New York Times yesterday, based on a study done by Wake Forest University. They carefully reviewed videotape and reports from matches, which in effect showed that women in their world cup are much less likely to fake injuries and fouls than men do. Essentially, women have about half the incidence of injury, and most are genuine, and likewise something like half the fouls. Which helps to explain why the Brazilian player the other day who faked an injury near the end of extra time was cautioned for delaying the game.

Yes, mighty, I was going to say that yesterday. The women do seem to embrace
FIFA's fair play encomium. You see hard fouls but not so many cynical or
downright malicious ones.
The French are looking dangerous but their keeper is a joke. It should be
3-1 by now but we're not finishing.
I'd like to see Rodriguez pulled for Rapinoe.

Unless France can get some shots off from inside the goal box, they will not score. Barring a deflection off a deffender, they can not beat Hope Solo with these outside shots. Hope is on a plane.

I stand corrected. Sonia connected with the back right side of the net from way outside far left side of the pitch.

I still wondering if the French keeper even knew the ball was live on Wambach's goal.
Quelle horreur!

So what? Maybe the girls haven't heard the old expression: "If You Ain't Cheating, You Ain't Trying."
The US players certainly seemed bent out of sorts when they got some tough calls in the Brazil game (although I didn't see them declining the benefit of the missed handball).

Sweden's goal scorer - Josefine Öqvist
Clearly a scorer and a shy wallflower.
I was just about to say the Canadian ref has done well and she makes a right
hash of apotentially game-deciding call. Luckily, nothing came of it. Her
linesmen have gotten almost every offside wrong - a shocking display.
I am verry impressed with the Japanese ball-handling and teamwork. They
just don't have a scorer.
..........................................
Congrats Japan - well earned if a shocking goalkeeping display.

OK, The above photo might have caught my attention ;-), but still I have a gripe related to that very fact.
The espn website says:
Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy and Co. got the rock-star treatment during the '99 World Cup, and every team since then has lived in their shadow. Part of the problem is no team's been able to duplicate that group's success. But nobody's been able to captivate the U.S. public like that golden group, either.
and that's pretty much true.
WTF!
That is in spite of the fact that the 99 women's cup was decided by penalty kicks and that's one place where I can argue that the goalie is more important than the other players. And gee guess what? The goalie, Brian Scurry, wasn't a "golden girl", in fact she was distinctly dark.
It just bugs the sh#t out of me how she is ignored.
