That fat clueless ref of the USA-Brasil game just made a mockery of the World Cup.
I've seen thousands of matches (and played in a fair few up to the NCAA playoffs)
and she is now #1 for either incompetence or blatant bribe-taking.
She probably should have sent Lloyd off for the deliberate handball earlier but didn't.
What a disgrace.

At the 88 minute mark she then gave Rapinoe a yellow card even though she
awarded a free kick for a foul against Rapinoe. WTF?
Those linespeople are equally clueless.

So Brazil and the US share the same hotel.... as they did four years ago when Brazil won 4-0. Evidently the post game lobby celebrations four years ago left a an impression on the US players... Perhaps this calls for a Brazilian pinata hanging in the lobby?

Seemed like a lot of whining by the announcer -- yeah the ref made some bad calls against the US but made some equally bad calls in its favor.
And how dare those darn Brazilians have the audacity to celebrate their victory in the hotel where they (and US team) were staying 4 years ago? Send in the bombers!

Because of this thread.. I'm now in the first 5 minutes of a replay of the match.
Own goal, and tough play seem to be the highlights so far...
Still watching..
Fishy Corner call @ 12:08, recv took some time to "decide", but came to her senses to give it to US.
Nice hail mary shot under pressure @ 16:69
Been watching more women soccer matches with this being the world cup and all. Seems to me that the ladies have a totally different ref standard. They hardly call certain fouls that would be on the mens side. Keep playing is what I get from most of the games I've seen so far.
@ 65:00 the red card was a bit much, then yellow card to Solo.
Somethings is up with that.
Agreed, someone got paid for this
Ok, here's the deal. The foul @ 65 mins looked bad as the two players were shoulder to shoulder. As for the penalty, there was movement off the goal line, though this I have seen many times in just about every free kick from the spot, but something else was pointed out: Another player from the US had moved off the penalty box line toward the goal, which may have added to the call to take the penalty over again.
All in all: Someone got paid
That's was an AMAZING finish!!!
Abby Wambach superstar!!!
Penalty Shootout? Spectacular finish
F*#king Magic by Solo!!!!
USA wins despite being hamstrung by the ref.

In all fairness I think the linesmen sucked worse based on number and consistency.
The ref's errors were, of course, far more egregious although that one offside
called against the US could easily have been a breakaway goal. A total travesty.

Bergbryce,
You're spot on but it wasn't that easy of a header. I think that Pia's
insertion of Rapinoe in the second half changed the game. Her speed and
laser-sharp crosses were phenomenal. Every one seemed to be a thing of
beauty - low, driven, and accurate. Solo, of course, has to be the player
of the game but Rapinoe certainly was a close second.

Been watching the Under-17 World Cup as well over on ESPN 3.
Fantastic game between Germany and Brazil for the 3rd place playoff.
Germany on the sheets early on, but within minutes Brazil was back to even 1-1. But soon Brazil was on fire clearing 2 by the 35 minute mark.
Not to be outdone Germany stepped back to within 1 by the half.
Awesome game so far..

Great drama and grit coming back from a woman down! Game should have been over in regulation. That PK redo was crap.
Rapinoe's cross for the header was the real sh*t. Left footed now less! Seemed like Hope set up the 3rd shooter by going away from her bad shoulder twice, then going the other way. One of the greatest games I've ever seen, despite the ref's.

"Three times I had to ask before anyone stepped forward," Powell told the Guardian newspaper. "That's weak, it's cowardice.""

There was an interesting article in the New York Times yesterday, based on a study done by Wake Forest University. They carefully reviewed videotape and reports from matches, which in effect showed that women in their world cup are much less likely to fake injuries and fouls than men do. Essentially, women have about half the incidence of injury, and most are genuine, and likewise something like half the fouls. Which helps to explain why the Brazilian player the other day who faked an injury near the end of extra time was cautioned for delaying the game.

Yes, mighty, I was going to say that yesterday. The women do seem to embrace
FIFA's fair play encomium. You see hard fouls but not so many cynical or
downright malicious ones.
The French are looking dangerous but their keeper is a joke. It should be
3-1 by now but we're not finishing.
I'd like to see Rodriguez pulled for Rapinoe.

So what? Maybe the girls haven't heard the old expression: "If You Ain't Cheating, You Ain't Trying."
The US players certainly seemed bent out of sorts when they got some tough calls in the Brazil game (although I didn't see them declining the benefit of the missed handball).

Sweden's goal scorer - Josefine Öqvist
Clearly a scorer and a shy wallflower.
I was just about to say the Canadian ref has done well and she makes a right
hash of apotentially game-deciding call. Luckily, nothing came of it. Her
linesmen have gotten almost every offside wrong - a shocking display.
I am verry impressed with the Japanese ball-handling and teamwork. They
just don't have a scorer.

Congrats Japan - well earned if a shocking goalkeeping display.

OK, The above photo might have caught my attention ;-), but still I have a gripe related to that very fact.
The espn website says:
Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy and Co. got the rock-star treatment during the '99 World Cup, and every team since then has lived in their shadow. Part of the problem is no team's been able to duplicate that group's success. But nobody's been able to captivate the U.S. public like that golden group, either.
and that's pretty much true.
WTF!
That is in spite of the fact that the 99 women's cup was decided by penalty kicks and that's one place where I can argue that the goalie is more important than the other players. And gee guess what? The goalie, Brian Scurry, wasn't a "golden girl", in fact she was distinctly dark.
It just bugs the sh#t out of me how she is ignored.

Man, dontchya hate it when you get the bogus musk deer glands instead of the good ones?
5 North Koreans positive at women’s World Cup
By RAF CASERT, AP Sports Writer
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP)—North Korea is blaming football’s worst doping scandal in almost two decades on using steroid-laced medicine from musk deer glands to treat injuries from a lightning strike at a training camp for the Women’s World Cup.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter said Saturday that after two North Korean players were caught during the tournament, three more positive results came in when the world football federation took the unprecedented decision to test all members of the squad.
“This is a shock,” Blatter told a news conference. “We are confronted with a very, very bad case of doping and it hurts.”
The last doping case at a major event came at the men’s 1994 World Cup in the United States, when Diego Maradona was kicked out after testing positive for using a cocktail of banned substances.
Colombia reserve goalkeeper Yineth Varon has meanwhile been suspended for failing an out-of-competition test just before the Women’s World Cup in the wake of undergoing hormonal treatment. It was the first doping case in the history of the women’s Cup.
All attention, however, turned to the North Korean cases on Saturday.
“The North Korean officials said they didn’t use it to improve performance. They said they had a serious lightning accident with several players injured and they gave it as therapy,” Michel D’Hooghe, head of FIFA’s medical committee, said in an interview.
A North Korean delegation told Blatter and D’Hooghe early Saturday that the steroids were accidentally taken with traditional Chinese medicines based on musk deer glands. After North Korea lost its opener against the United States, team officials first claimed that lightning had struck several players on June 8 during a training camp at home.
The case will be taken up by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. Players face a ban of up to two years for such infractions.
Defenders Song Jong Sun and Jong Pok Sim tested positive for steroids after North Korea’s first two group games and were suspended for the last match. The team was eliminated in the first round after another loss to Sweden and a draw with Colombia.
The names of the three other players would be made public only at a later stage, FIFA said.
The gland in question comes from musk deer living in a large swath of Asia from Siberia to North Korea. The hairy four-centimeter gland is usually cut open to extract a liquid that is then used for medical purposes.
“There is a whole industry linked to that to produce these medical products,” D’Hooghe said.
Doping officials have been concerned about such naturally occurring substances in recent years. During the run-up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, FIFA’s concerns focused on African plants that could give players an unfair advantage by providing energy boosts or helping to heal muscle injuries.
FIFA investigators who discovered evidence of doping in the North Korean samples found themselves in uncharted territory. Experts from the World Anti-Doping Agency were called in to confirm the breach of doping rules.
“It was very complex,” FIFA chief medical officer Jiri Dvorak said, especially since the type of steroids had “never before appeared and never before been determined.”
All experts concluded there were “positive findings of an unknown origin,” Dvorak said.
After the first two cases were discovered, doping officials made an unannounced visit to North Korea’s last match to impose the provisional suspension on the two players. They then said all the players would be tested.
“They were surprised but they cooperated,” Dvorak said.
The testing took until 3:00 am. A few hours later, the whole delegation was on its way back to North Korea. But the team’s medical officer had provided the breakthrough, following extensive testing that took until late Friday.
“(The officer) gave us a sample that she described as classical or traditional medicine that is often used in North Korea,” Dvorak said. “We can really say with far-reaching confidence that these steroids were the result of this so-called Chinese traditional medicine.”
The musk gland extract “it is not part of the world of doping,” Dvorak said. “It is really the first case in which this has been discovered.”
The North Koreans refused to elaborate on the circumstances of the lightning incident. North Korea coach Kim Kwang Min said that “more than five” players were sent to hospital, with goalkeeper Hong Myong Hui, four defenders and some of the midfielders the players most affected.
Dvorak also said the information was still sketchy.
“We saw some pictures with ambulances and saw that some players were taken from the pitch, but that is all we have,” he said.
FIFA also received information from North Korea about the initial hospital treatment of the players and “this very first report did not include the traditional Chinese medicine,” Dvorak said.
There had been fears that North Korea could have been the first country in football to be caught providing systematic doping.
“It is not systemic because not all of the players took it. We would have found it with the others, too,” said D’Hooghe.
The tournament ends on Sunday with the final between the United States and Japan.
FIFA annually spends some $30 million on 35,000 doping tests. Despite the six cases at the women’s World Cup, “doping really is a marginal, fringe phenomenon in football,” said Blatter.

Presumably the North Koreans' deer musk glands were laced with steroids in the same way that traditional Asian virility "medicines" - often made or at least allegedly made from endangered species - are laced with Viagra.
Not that there seems any real need for treatments to enhance male virility in Asia, given population growth there, or that there's any scientific proof that such traditional 'treatments' are effective.
Anyway, it's probably off to the gulag or worse for the team doctor, if not the coaches and players.

I'm glad Pia finally listened to me and started Rapinoe. She has disappointed
with too many bad passes.
Finishing has always been the bane of American teams of both sexes. I hope
this doesn't prove to be another game like that but there have been so many
'almosts' in this game, including the one to start the second half, that it
starts to mess with your head. Luckily, there's no quit in these women.
Good marks to the ref so far and even her linesmen.
Ooops, I spoke too soon. Japan just got screwed by a howler of an offside.

I couldn't believe the shoot out. The first Japanese goal, what a silly shot. It didn't even look like she was going to kick it, but she fully snowed Solo. Then the US tried to power their shots, to obvious no avail.

I watched a replay of the second half and extra time with my father - he hadn't seen it earlier, and didn't know the result, and as I don't have TV we sometimes watch such things together. Overall it seemed a clean, skillful game, which either team could have won. The referee did not do well by sending off a Japanese player with a minute to go in extra time - it was pretty clear that she successfully played the ball, not the other player, or at least both ball and player at the same time. Even a caution probably wasn't warranted, although a free kick was justified.
I hate it when games are decided on penalties, but at least in this case it wasn't deciding a 0 - 0 draw.
The Americans took less advantage of their height and size advantage than they might have.
It brought to mind the last mens' final, where Spain beat the Netherlands just before the end of extra time, in an ugly game. The goal was probably offside - there was a pass from player A (outside left) to player B (centre), another pass from player B to player C, then the latter shot. Except that player C was offside on the first pass. It wasn't to him, but certainly he was in the play.

MH - watch the first half (and the multiple hits on the crossbars in the first 15 minutes!)
Also, as I understand it, if you foul someone during a "goal-scoring opportunity" -> automatic red card. Referee had no choice, really.
Anyway, kudos to Japan for playing well, I'm happy for them - couldn't have wished to lose to a better, more courteous, respectful team. Good, clean game all around. Plus, I like underdogs, especially when they're short, fast players (like me!).

They pulled a LABRON. That one chick kicked the ball into the stands or something on her attempt - not even close to the bar. Obviously they were the better team, but when it came right down to mentally (let's say), not so. Like Wambach laughing after missing that one shot-on-goal is the wrong attitude. They were probably tweeting etc during halftime, or wondering where Casey Anthony was gonna be relocated (something like that). Totally suspect.

The women's final was by far the best match of the 5 I watched this weekend.
Watching the pathetic Paraguay - Brazil brawl in the pic-in-pic really underscored that.
The level of cynicism and incompetence from the various 'favorites' at the Copa is frankly kind of disturbing.

CLEO - You are right about the red card. However, I'm pretty sure the player who got the card can be credited with saving the game for Japan. That was a good play on her part.

agree, especially so late in the game. i used to play goalie in field hockey in HS, and I occasionally did blatantly illegal things to prevent a goal (which resulted in a penalty shot, but no ejection - and i was good at penalty shots).
That is also exactly why such a foul is given a red card - to discourage that kind of play - e.g. I'd probably NOT have done those sorts of things in HS if it meant my team was down a player for the rest of the game.

I am predicting an early exit in the knockout rounds for Team USA. They seemed unorganized, confused, and flat. There seems to be a lack of passion. I hope I am wrong...

US did not look sharp against Nigeria. And what is it with playing it short on corner kicks? If they have Wambach in, why would you not cross it in front of the frame?

We were walking down Main St in Santa Monica to go to a B-day pardoo when the game
ended and the chants of "U-S-A"started coming out of the bars on both sides of the street
and echoing off the buildings. It was pretty damn cool. We nipped into one joint to see the
on field celebrations.
I did see most of the first half - the Japanese D seemed to have no cohesion or communi-
cation. They did get their act together so kudos to them for hanging in there. Now if they
could just find a keeper about 4" taller, eh? That was some atrocious reffing toward the end
of the first half.

I wasn't sure if Carli's last goal was a record breaker--I thought David
Villa had a longer goal. . . but nooooooooo! His goal against Portugal
in 2010 was about 10 or 15 yards shorter, but he hit it first time!
Carli Rocks!
(I'll add that Japan played a pretty good game too--they have nothing
to be ashamed of. Down 4-0, they kept to their game plan and fought
back with determination, they didn't fall apart. Good coaching and
great sportswomen, they are).

A question for all you keen soccer fans: If the US team had been eliminated in the first round, or even failed to get into the the first round, would any of you be posting here?
Do you follow soccer on a regular basis? Or only when "your" team manages to do well?
