The Party Begins !!!

At the top of the Marquis today: our current take is at $4,127 ... and still growing, given recently pledged poster sales.
$1,220 of this total was generated from profits made at the food offering, which is a really cool thing to understand in terms of outstanding behavior and overall goodwill.

Post Party Sunday Climbing Activities

the walk to unreported rock

Sunday rolled out beautifully for all: clear, calm, and pristine. We had a group rendezvous at Quail Springs Picnic Area. In total, the crew clocked in at just under a couple dozen ranch-ready lariat toting old dads. The group’s flow naturally formed into a handful of chatty eddies, while Doug Robinson broke out his mini-stove in service of tea.

Eventually the strike force found its shape threading single file through the untracked desert, while Douglas, Helga and I lagged behind for want of addressing second thoughts in terms of provisions. Once underway, Doug Nidever, Tobin, Amie and Marty formed the back of the slinky as our tardy caboose marched outward from Quail Springs.

The walking was really nice! The soil was soft and yielding, providing cushion for long strides and the clear air filled our souls with that emotive wonder often felt when setting out anew through fresh desert bloom.

After a solid 45 minutes of determined footwork, it was clear that we were not so much lost as … in the wrong place, with some confusion as to the location of the correct place. Right at the still point of that collective recognition, with perfect pitch, in key and right on time, Douglas Nidever complemented my guiding skills.

I confess here to back story. The gang of four had been in possession of some special cookies … and had eaten them all up, each and every one. Great strategy for smoothing out musculoskeletal wrinkles, as well as sprucing up one’s sense of cognitive levity.

By design Peter remained at Quail Springs, owing to the fact that the bearing surfaces of his right knee joint, originally graced by God with a handy little cartilage pad, currently shows on x-ray, a gap just wide enough to floss with a single sheet of mylar.

So he stayed behind as planned, and while we were delicately wobbling through the desert, Mr. Haan settled in behind some rocks in the shade, laptop on lap, merrily tooling up one of his fashionable literary creations. Reports have it that Peter’s id and superego were playing badminton with his cherished scribblings. Apparently his internal referee watched keenly, with a curious mixture of delight, self-contempt and brutal honesty as those severed aspects of his bad-ole-self knocked that birdie rhythmically back and forth, back and forth … back and forth. I believe the take away was "opportunity is SO much work".

Right about that time we took some group pictures and turned around to head back, shortly to bump into Josh Janes, who hinted at a suitable course correction. Soon bidding farewell to the Doug Nidever-Amie-Tobin portion of the human slinky, Doug Robinson, Marty, Helga and I then broke away, following this sweet little ascending arc through the sage to the top of a col notched into a sandy spine handily perched above the desert floor.

A nice patch of high ground upon which to gain our bearings I figured; once in position the view opened up to a lovely expanse separating us from the Unreported Rock and I could just make out a group of eight or so folks scattered about the base of the crag. Course correction successfully completed, we decided to seize the moment, do the proper thing, enjoy the setting and break for lunch.

Blue sky, blonde sands, and a handy picnic spot naturally set into the gentle concavity of this miniature ridge line, shaped much like the elegant catenary swoop seen in the profile of a 1970s A-frame mountain tent : there we sat aloft, fondly nibbling grapes, water crackers, aged cheese, and avocado slices … the simple things in life can be so good!

Following our repast, smartly braced with fuel and a crisp enthusiasm, we toddled downward and onward, soon to partake in the delights of Unreported Rock…
