Cool one this week!
Today I started running (in five fingers) at the hidden valley trailhead south of moab. Up 1200'(?) and over a few miles where it joins the Moab rim trail up and down for a few miles, then a plunge similar to the initial climb, taking me down to the trailhead @ Kane creek, where I had stashed a mtn bike. Two miles on pavement and I joined the pipe dream mtb trail back to my car. 13.3 miles total, About half running and half on bike, some of which was technical enough for a low speed wipe out; my right boy-tit hurts! Stops to eat and take pictures 2.5 hrs & change.
Good day! I wonder if Larry still has some leftovers from yesterday...

I did a similar event like this last Dcember,0nly all on foot, and with an added five miles complete with highball death potential, because I got lost . So I guess this is almost an annual event. It also marks 12 continuos months of at least monthly adventures of this level and duration, including almost twenty half marathons, 30+ and 40+ mile bike rides etc. I'll have to devise a more ambitious monthly aerobic goal for 2013!

Probably drank about a litter agua & diluted Gatorade . Feel a little dry now actually.

Good job Bro Jay. How much water do you {carry, consume}?

Today we did 8.46, mostly fireroads, I drank 34 oz. (up from 17, straight water no additives) and felt very markedly better. Still I lost 4 lbs. water weight.

Jay....you'll be ready for he Moab trail marathon next year...I think it follows some of the same area you covered. I'm lusting on the half but I don't think this ole bod can really get whipped in shape for it. Never hurts to dream.....

I might just plan for that Susan. Lets do it. If I can do it so can you!
Edit: what a cool looking course, I'm in! We have a whole year to train! A funny thing, my friends and I ate @ Milt's after our Moab brand mtn bike ride and it was the same day as the trail marathon, man those trailrunners are a hungry bunch!

Z, I carried a1.5 litter camelback and had a bike bottle of 50/ 50 water Gatorade waiting for me on the bike . The high today was only 57° and I was largely in shade.

Yep Jay, it's a doer if ever I could. We had a friend do the full marathon. She was staying in the same place as us but had to leave before you got a chance to meet her. She's 50 and in phenomenal shape....had just done a road marathon 3 weeks prior. Said the Moab Trail marathon was the best one ever. After mile 14 she said it was mainly an obstacle course and she said it was fun...but really grueling. She did say a lot of sand running, which I despise in both biking and running but you're probably getting used to it.
I really want to shoot for the half. I've a long ways to go...but heck...I'll shoot for it and if it doesn't work out I can do the 5k.
Ok. Talked myself into it!

Those fifty year old kids are something. Aren't they?
So that's the plan for next year Susan, at least the half. Assuming I'm still in the area or can travel back. It would be my forty ninth marathon. Maybe I should do an easier one first and have it be my fiftieth. It would be a really cool fiftieth.

Okay one more check in; today's run was the portal / poison spider trail with a little extra of the golden spike thrown in because I'm a klutz. Should have been 12.9 miles ended up being a hair over 14. On to the rec center to colapse in the pool & shower.

Edit; and now off to the brewery!

Sheeeeet Jay, I'm barely in the double digits and they were all awhile ago! So, I got a new GPS watch/heart rate monitor (love my toys)...unfortunately, it's soooo damn honest....
today's run was a street run down through Capitola, 5.39 miles (and I always thought it closer to 6) and an average pace of 9:12, wow much slower than I thought...but I always stop for a bit in Capitola to watch the waves so I guess it takes that into consideration.

Yep, that Moab TRail Marathon/Half seems like a really fun endeavor, or heart attack alley. We shall see!

I off to PA for a few days for my dad's 90th birthday. I probably won't be running, but if snow is good we ski all over town. Easier than driving. It'll be fun to use my GPS for that.

Oh boy...that's a knarly piece of business. Watch those signs! They mean what they say.

Keep running, climbing, biking, LIVING LARGE!

my dad's 90th birthday.

Nothing like having good genes! My Parents hit their 65th wedding anniversary last week and we had a good time in Connecticut.

I'm not doing so great. I trained hard for the Marathon that wasn't (New York) a month ago and I think I should feel like Superman.

But I'm not. I ran 18 miles in 5 days and took today off. Kind of bumping along the bottom. Two months ago, I would've laid down the 18 on a Saturday in a little over 3 hours.

Setting forth my goals for 2013:

100 mile mtn bike race
50 mile trail run

Signed up and stoked for the Squamish 50, Squamish50.com if anyone wants to do an ultra! Spots went incredibly fast on the first signup. They ended up opening the spots for the 50k so more people could sign up for the 50 miler.

What are you goals for 2013?

Moab trail marathon in October. Realistically, the trail half marathon.
Average of 12,000 vertical feet per day for each day I ski at the resorts.
Much more regularity with road and mountain biking

Stay healthy!

Do about 15 races as usual.

Get my shorter race time down.

Do my first International Running Race, a couple of shorter Tris, about 3 Half Marathons, a long bike race.

2013 will be the year of the invert!

Today I ran a 14 mile version of the slickrock trail. Hadn't run since thanksgiving, and felt it!
Also, yesterday I did a big workout in the canyonlands invert boulders. Routes, shuffles sit-ups etc. I think I'm feeling that as well. Though I did get called an old man yesterday. Okay off to the rec center weights, swimming, shower!

My new endocrinologist took me off levothyroxine altogther (my thyroid has come back to life?).

I'm feeling more like I used to. We scratched out a 1/2 marathon (actually 13.6) the other day (my first in a while, Michele's first ever).

Will I become the second ever 70-year old to do a sub-three hour marathon? I'm not counting on it, but 2013 is gonna surpass 2012 4sure.

EDIT:
12/27/12
11:00AM - 10K
4:30PM - 10K
Until endocrinological homeostasis is attained breaking it up may be the way to go.
